Does your League Operator act like a Dictator?

I have seen and heard of a few League Operators that make the rules as they want to satisfy their own needs. Also some that go out of their way to hurt a competitor who runs another league in town. Some of what I hear is downright childish and vindictive. I imagine most are not like this but the ones that are can really ruin pool in their area and people should know about them. So I suggest if you know some selfish League Operator let others in your area know. Oh there are some that steal too.

My LO's pretty cool and, from what I understand, is in charge of one of the larger areas. They put up with a lot of crap that I wouldn't. It seems like an organizing job mixed with a heavy dose of babysitting.

I agree, alot of them I think get alot of BS from people and in some cases they don't even get paid to run the league.

Our LO is so nice he leaves us lovely notes every week to cheer us all up. My favorites so far are:

"Save your pink pens for your autograph sessions."
"If you haven't submitted your corrections, too bad so sad."
"We are not here to decipher your scribbles. Write in English or you get a 0."

There are more, those are just the 3 that stick out in my mind the most. I should start taking pictures of them for posterity.

Bad league operators

They're in the minority, but yes, they definitely exist. I could name a dozen I've encountered since my first league experience in 1966.

Before I came to town, apparently there was a BCA operator who didn't pay out at the end of the season (some twenty years ago?), blamed it on the BCA (who of course had nothing to do with the $), and because of that, we've been unable to organize a BCA (or VNEA or ACS) league since. Very sad.

Thats the kind of thing I am talking about. Can hurt pool in someones area.

I didn't think so until he started wearing all this military dress garb and put up all those weird statues of himself ...

Yes. Uncompromising megalomaniacs. The only thing that gives them more pleasure than watching their franchise grow, is knowing that a competitor is struggling.

So far I have no real complaints. Our seems to be in a permanent slightly sour mood, but I think it's just a personality clash. He seems dedicated to making the league work and getting stuff done on time.

LOL @ the sarcastic notes ghosst. I think I might actually like that LO.

Ours did. So we all quit and brought in a different league. Heard the LO is a lot nicer to their other league players/teams/poolhalls now. Imagine that.

I know of a situation where at the end of the session the winning team asked for their payout and the BCA operator said...."sorry, there's no money. If you don't like it sue me". While he's not the league operator anymore he didn't get sued either.

Just wrong. I will bet they got paid somehow.

Not currently, no.

Had one in the past that wasn't a dictator...more like a king. He collected taxes, paid out nothing, and nobody ever saw him, except for very rare appearances once a year or so.

Didn't sour me to leagues though, there's bad apples in every bunch.

Edit: funniest thing about that lo was the finances of the league and what a ripoff it was. 15 five man teams paying forty bucks a week ($600 a week). No payoffs for first or anyone else...just trophies. He also charged two fifty for this elittle metal "break and run" type pins that many leagues give out for free. he had two other locations he ran in house leagues out of, and sold cues on the side (at ridiculous, ridiculous markups above catalog prices). But give that shyster credit...he drove a brand new car every year! :)

NO - I am not :)

And yes - organizing pool players is like herding cats

We have a "thou shalt not whine" philosophy ;)

Panther VNEA League. LO is a great guy. He purchased the franchise basically to make a little money on the tables and also to keep the league running. The last owners pretty much ran it into the ground for the time they had it. He paid a fair chunk of change for the tables and franchise and doubt he is close to being out of the hole just yet.

So far going into year 2, the LO has put a fair amount of his own money from his other business to keep it going. Thats almost to be expected when starting a new business. At least he fully expected it.

This year we added a 3 person board of directors. I got in. We just wanted to see this guys hard work pay off and see that the league was successful. That and to take a bit of the pressure off the LO. If someone has a problem, they can also come to one of the board members.
And then everything is put to a vote between the 4 of us.
People do a lot of B itchin and won't help out ever. Then when they have no place or league to play in, they'll be b itchin again.

And some league players just like to B itch because they can. No way, really?

To help stop this from happening, we implemented somewhat of our own charter of rules and regs. This way people knew what was happening at the start of the season.

The last owners seemed to make up rules and special rules for some as they went along.

Then it got to be, well, if they can do it, why can't we? And then the cluster FK started. I'm sure you all have seen examples of this, right. So no special privileges or rights unless it is under dire circumstances. Take it or leave it. The last owners lost a lot of teams and players because of this. When you loose players to another league, it takes a while to get them to come back, so we're slowly trying to
rebuild part of the mess that was handed down.

So far so good going into season 2.
