Don't like my opponents wearing headphones!

In the past it has never bothered me when my opponents wore headphones, I have even considered it myself from time to time just to see if it would put me in the zone, until recently.........A few weeks ago I was playing a decent size 9 ball tournament with a $90 entry fee, it was in the late stages on the second day, I was trouncing my opponent handily and sitting on the hill, as my opponent was desperately trying to run out they blatantly double hit the 5 ball, you could clearly hear it, but could my opponent hear it? I'm sure they felt it and had they heard it they would of known how blatant it was and I'm guessing conceded ball in hand to me........But NO....they just keep on shooting with that Snoop Dogg tune blaring away and making no eye contact with me. Had they not have been wearing headphones I could of at least said..(C'mon, you telling' me you didn't hear that double hit....and centered them out a bit at least).........oh ya, and I don't like when you have to give your opponent sign language when they are on two fouls.

I like music when I'm playing pool. I tried my head phones last week and couldn't play without hearing the sound of the balls. Nothing better than a well struck ball hitting the center of a leather pocket.

You need to talk to your tournament director(s) and clarify these situations. I think it was at Turning Stone, people are allowed to use headphones but if their opponent (i.e., you) want to question something and they don't hear and shoot again, it's a foul and you get BIH. Sure you have to jump around to get their attention, but the longer they ignore you the easier your runout gets to be. :)

I doubt the headphone had anything to do with it. They know they fouled, they just tried to play it off like they didnt foul or thought you didnt know it was a foul by continuing to shoot.

If you let them continue shooting, didnt stop them before getting to the next ball, didnt call a ref over prior to the questionable shot, then technically you are more at fault then your opponent.

Personally I'm an advocate for headphones. I prefer wearing them and I have no problem with an opponent wearing them. As long as myself and my opponent are able to communicate to each other (Push out, foul, etc) while they are on, then i dont see it being a problem.

Also, he very well might have been clueless and thought it was a legit shot. Double hits are obvious though via, site and feel as well. I have seen so many bangers just blast through 2 balls and keep on playing and say something stupid like "wow, look at at the follow spin I had on that".

I'm getting more and more like my parents everyday that goes by. I'm "old school". I'm having growing pains. It's hard for me to change with the times. I don't like people wearing headphones when I'm playing them. I don't like people NOT sitting in their chair when I'm at the table. I don't like all this loud, outward display of emotion when somebody wins a match that has been the trend for 10 or 12 years now. I just like the nice, "old days" style of pool that I grew up on. A relaxed atmosphere. A quiet "gentlemens" game with nothing heard but the clacking of the balls and the occasional rack being put onto the table.

Oh, those days have long passed me by :(!!!

What he said!!!!

Maniac you could not have said it any better, my thoughts every week at pool league. I teach my son 13yr old get back and stay away til other player is done shooting. I have backed into way too many players trying to line up shots and they have no clue. I really like to hear people talk when Im down on a ball! LOL I have stopped and told a few guys to shut the hell up while im shooting, I would never do it to a player so please dont do it to me. I guess Im old and cranky at 38!

I'm on board also.

I am against the headphones too. My opponent should have to play in the same environment as I do. The worst part is when you tell them theyre on 2 and they still make no eye contact. Makes me feel like an idiot having to clarify.

I wouldn't be happy about that either. These are very good reasons for not allowing headphones. I have considered wearing them myself before but I wont now.

Another thing to watch out for is sometimes they are not listening to music, I have caught one before getting coached via the headphones. The headphones were plugged into his cell phone and there was a guy watching his game and telling him what ball to shoot next and how to shoot it.

It took me awhile to catch on to what this guy was doing but I knew for sure once I stood in his line of site of the table and the coach moved to get a better look. The player stalled waiting for instructions and I moved again to block his view. When the coached moved again I called him out.
It's pretty sad when someone has to do this to get an edge.

So if he wasn't wearing headphones he still would've said it was a good hit and unless you had the TD there to watch it then it automatically goes to the player. Headphones have nothing to do with knowing its a bad hit or not... He knew it was bad or he was one of those idiots (that you commonly see in apa) who thinks jacking up instantly prevents pushing through balls when that's not at all true.

Well said. I feel the same way. Class is quickly becoming a thing of the past.

I do not like headphones as much as I do not like loud blaring music. When I'm playing pool with someone I'd at least expect them to have the decency to talk to me, if they do not wish to do that, the hell with em. Let them play pool with someone else... In tournaments I think they should be banned altogether.

I've heard a lot of excuses for losing but I believe this is the first time I've heard this one.

You deserve rep for originality.

Er.........there's not a single word in any of the posts thus far that even implies that anyone has lost ANY games of pool over the use of headphones .

But, by all means go ahead and rep the OP anyway. Everybody can use a little green rep every now and then !!!

I've been wearing earplugs lately, but I can still hear through them. It's mostly just to lower the volume to somewhere I can think. Welcome to old age brother ... 38 is the new 90 in pool.

In cards and chess, yes, pool NO.

What shot to shoot? You still have to be able to execute.

I think they are rude! I understand some people may say I can't be distracted, I focus better, I need my music, whatever!! I put them in the same boat as someone who is constantly on the phone. Talking on the phone while having dinner with someone? Jabbering with my friends is more important than dinner with you! Rude. Pool is a social thing for most people. We need to talk during our game. Nice cue, who made it? Been catching any fish? Is that your new girlfriend? Introduce us. I take a few poolshooting buddies fishing on my brothers ponds. If they wore headphones they would never fish with me again. Many world problems are solved because we communicate while fishing! Also how can I get in your head while you wear those damm headphones? Your in my head cause you wear them! I have to run my game and help you run yours too?

Yes, but in the game of 8-ball, the pattern itself is a HUGE part of the game, and this cheating "system" could aid greatly in this game.

In a rotation game the "messenger" may have been telling the shooter what english to apply, how many rails to use for position, and/or what speed to hit the cueball.

Cheating is cheating no matter how you cut-and-dice it.
