Downey or Kikel?

There are actually a lot in common with both makers. Both currently prefer the flat faced joint w/radial pin, for that firm hit. Dave and Troy are also good friends. Of course Kikel is a more well known maker, and IMO is one of the top 5 or 6 in execution and originality. However, for those willing to give Troy Downey a shot, there will be no disappointments! I have witnessed many "big name" makers cues that left their respective shops with issues that even a casual observer would notice. I also have seen Mr. Downey take a cue directly to the saw, due to a light spot on ebony or a dark shadow in curly maple! Look, there are the elite - Tad, Scruggs, Szamboti, Schick etc.. and I think the way Dave K. makes cues is as good as these guys. I also firmly believe that Downey is in that next degree of builder, with the potential to be in that elite class.
 
I agree with your assessment here CP. At the moment you might get a bit more cue for your dough with Troy because he is not as well known. Both guys are on the move upward, IMO. Attention to detail never goes out of style.

Cues

I've never hit with a Kikel but I've hit with a few Downeys and they were all nice looking and hit great. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I was in the market.
 
In a truly civilized world, Dave Kikel would sit on the high councel. Both make very nice cues.
