How do you hit this to draw as far back toward A as possible

You want not only to draw past the side pocket, but to draw as far past it (toward A) as you can. You're hitting with a normal level cue (not jacked up). Do you hit with straight low, low left, or low right?

low left??

low right hits short of the pocket, low goes in the side?

i know a couple of people that shoot this shot with low left. they say it helps straighten out the angle a little. i think you just have to straighten it out a little

Low left will draw it past the pocket...but that's with my stroke. ;)

Sorry if I made it seem like I was questioning you, I was questioning myself!

Low left is what I would play.

Level cue?

Assuming you mean not jacked up, straight low.

The benefits of sidespin tend to be cancelled by the negatives:

Left: Benefit=masse left; negative=hit thinner
Right: Benefit=hit fuller; negative=masse right

Now add the fact that with sidespin you can't get maximum draw, and it's clear that centerball is more effective.

The exception to this is if you purposely elevate your butt. Then the masse effect of sidespin can be greater than both hitting thinner and getting less than maximum draw.

after thinking about this shot, IMO you would have to hit low right too hard not to scratch. since you are trying to stop the cue ball at point 'A' i think i would hit low with just a slight bit of left. just my opinion, i don't claim to have all the knowledge. lol i am assuming the that we are to stop the ball at point 'A', maybe I'm reading it wrong though..

The way it is drawn, I could hit this shot all day long with bottom right and NOT scratch.

A little steeper angle and then it might bring it closer to a scratch.

low right. but only a very slight touch of right for a bit of a sweeter contact. but exactly centre ball draw would be fine too.

I used to think from a physics standpoint that made the most sense but now "inside" sends it back sharper even with the added non benefit of the thinner hit. IMHO and probably wrong.

Exactly how Id do it. Use some throw to make the ball so you can hit it fuller to garuntee getting past the side.

At first instinct, I was thinking low-right. Hitting the ball more full should help, but if you're juicing the CB big-time with lots of draw and a hard stroke, not nearly as much SIT (spin-induced throw) would transfer than if you hit with stun-right with a slow/medium stroke. That means that in order to pocket the ball if low-right, you really won't be hitting the OB that much fuller than if you just hit with straight-low. EDIT: To be clear, I voted straight-low.

Great question Mike. I look forward to your answer.

When you hit it hard the low spin takes longer to take effect. The trick is to draw softer so that the spin takes almost immediately. I think that it's a common misconception that you need to hit these shots hard so that you put maximum draw. The harder you hit it, the more the cue ball glances before the draw catches.

I use center ball very low. The speed of the shot is usually more important than the hit on the cueball being off to one side or the other. You have to give the cb time to for the spin to take.
