Dream or Nightmare: Your Next Match Has Just Been Called for the Accu-Stats Table

Just couldn't make it last yr...sorry!

Thanks for the compliment!!

I don't do staged action photos....I want to see, and show real emotion in my shots.

See you soon!

P.S. Lou....we can give it another go this yr if you like?

oh yeah, yeah, yeah! Would be happy to give it a go, Rick, if you're game.

In the late 70's and early 80's I was playing around Houston and in the south a lot. I played every day at Reds when it opened up. They had a tournament at Reds to get the place on the map and it was great. A lot of champions were there. My first match was with Mike Massey. We talked a bit before the games started and I told him this was my first big tournament, he told me to just relax and play my game. My game was near good enough since he beat me like 11-5. It was intimitdating to play someone that I had seen play in a lot of tournaments and it made me nervous

lol. I met an old pool hall buddy (Jerry) a couple of years ago to catch up and I told him I played Efren in the US Open and he said, "I would have just crapped my pants."

I remember that match Lou. You made a good go of it! I think I remember Efren drawing out one of your shots on a cocktail napkin that even surprised the master! That was the last year of the US Open One Pocket in Kalamazoo IIRC.

I would love it....

There is no better way to gain perspective on your game then to watch your self play on tape. Especially against a player that makes you shake a little.

hope this happens to me in the near future.

11-5 vs Massey -- sounds like you did pretty good for yourself. Congrats.

Yes, the last Kalamazoo US Open 1Pocket Tournament bash, held that year at the hotel. Your memory is pretty good, but just a hair off, Sherm. As much as I might want to believe I impressed The Magician that much, it was actually one of his shots that ended up being diagram by Spanish Mike and was included in a great article about the whole tournament in "Details" magazine, written by good friend JD Dolan. It was a great article (my name got spelled right :-) and also included some great photos, including a full page shot of your good friend, Gary Spaeth.

Ahhh, yes! Thanks for refreshing my tired old memory. lol I remember that now. I do remember you winning a game or two against the master though. While you were playing that match, I left my cue repair booth to watch. While I was watching, some low life stole my copy of "Winning One Pocket" I had left in the booth, that had dozens of personal autographs from great players who even at that time, some had already passed away. That was a crushing blow to me. The article JD Dolan did about my road partner, Gary Spaeth was great though. RIP Gary, I miss you buddy!

Hey Buddy....missed you last yr.

Coming this yr, and I'm looking for another one of these.....

I know you'll cooperate to the best of your abilities!! Best of luck!!

Hello everyone. I need a favor? Can somebody put this pic over in the "cues for sale forum" for me? I'm going to put this cue up for sale.
It's the cue I won the "DCC banks" and " master of the table" with in 2009.

The cue plays good and has 3 good shafts. It's a Sherm cue.I would really appreciate It. And I have a copy of THAT mag to go with It.
Need some $ to buy my 16 year old son his first car.LOL
Thanks, John Brumback

Gotcha covered!!

Just out of curiosity

Do players who participate on an Accu-stats video match get paid for it? Do they get a percentage of sales of the DVD/tape?
If so, does a top player get paid more than say, a 1st timer?

Great post there too LFigueroa about watching the better players to learn. I was getting slammed at work and couldn't get in table time for practice and a pro player friend of mine said "make sure you watch DVD matches when you can't physically play. You will still be learning shots!" Great advice. I'm sure all of us had a shot come up in a match and think.. oh, I remember seeing this shot on TV!

Houston was a hot bed of world-beaters in those days . You could watch Strickland shooting light out at Reds nightly. Place never closed. Those were some long days..and nights. If the match wouldn't beat you ..the clock did.
Personally anytime my match gets called I'm happy I'm still in it. Always liked the lights !

Taken exactly as you staged it: it's no problem at all. If you're SUPPOSED to lose, then you could hope to play your game and at least show you've got some stuff. I think it would be much worse for the "stone-cold champion" who, on a fluke, might get whipped by a nobody.

One of my favorite examples of "center stage tournament psychology" is Earl in '83, beating Mizerak. (start watching around 3:35). I don't think there's another pool video showing that depth of "joyous basking," and the extent of it is a good measure of the misery Earl can show when things are turned around.

To do your best you simply have to be able to work your way through the psychological pitfalls of those situations.

I think the part you may be missing is that, for many if not most of us, there is wide deviation factor in the quality of our play, from day-to-day, if not from hour to hour. It's a prime factor that separates the amateur from the pro. Yes, I might be supposed to do OK, or even just play my game or up to my expected level of play, but it is also possible that I might get up and play like a dufus who looks like he's never held a cue before. That's the brutal reality for many of us. So, IMO, there could be a problem and that's what makes the question interesting.

It is easy to say it is purely or primarily an issue of psychology that needs to be worked through, but in my experience, that is not the case whatsoever, once a player gets a little seasoning. In fact, I would say the center stage part of it has next to nothing to do with it. It's more likely to be a matter of one's mechanics shifting. God knows it doesn't take much given how much precision the game requires.

I don't know what the pay out schedule is, but I do believe Pat does pay out based partially upon how well a tape/DVD sells.

And thanks for the compliment on the "better player" post.

last year at european championships my first round match in 9ball division was against ralf souquet.funny thing was i had an email exchange with ralf few months before EC and i wrote him that i would love to play him sometime in the future and he replied that some dreams come true earlier than one thinks... ..................realized that ralf didnt miss a single ball during our match, but he scratched on his break 3 times and made one bad safety...seems like the spectators helped me a lot to play good game :)[/QUOTE

First ,It's phenomenal that you remembered so much detail because you must have been," in the zone." Second , screw the grammar lessons. It was a great story that had my adrenaline running just reading it. For a banger like me I can't imagine the high you were on after your win. I'll bet it was hard to talk when they interviewed you. Thanks for sharing the moment.

depends on the situation, if i'm confident and i know i'm playing good and i have a chance it wouldn't be a nightmare, but if i'm not confident and i'm struggling...............
Also i'm a shy person and i really don't feel good when people are watching me... i became nervous pretty easily, i'm not used to big audience or tv lights so it could be a nightmare. I'm an anxious person too...
