I just got off the phone with a friend that was there with this particular match that alot of people were suspicious of after..and he told me the fix was deffinately in from the get go with everybody involved..He said he actually watched the winning player chop money with the losing player after the match was over...A saver ? yea right...if they playing on somebody elses money there shouldn't be no kind of saver..it's gambling...i can see if it was tournement..that's completely different...Being someone that use to be considered a stakehorse..this kind of news really gets under my skin...It's one of the reason i got out of it...now there's only a very few i will bet money on..If what was presented to me is true...I loss the little respect i had left for them plus the others that were involved.

cuttin up

You are right I have seen it in the past and it made me sick. Someone trust you and bets his money on you and you cut him up. It happen to me at Cassidy's in Houston a couple of times in the early 80's and I quit betting on others and would not stake anyone for any reason after that.
I had a pretty good bank roll back then and there were more thieves I call them than real gamblers.
Sorry for the soap box.

houmatroy...You actually seem surprised to hear that this happens! I hate to tell ya, but this has been going on for AT LEAST 50 years, that I know of...and probably longer. Doesn't make it right, but it happens all the same. I've seen players of all reputations and elevated status dump, on occasion (some more than others). Never liked it, and I refused to be staked by anybody back then...also never dumped a match, tournament or otherwise.

There's no excuse for anyone to ever dump a match where someone is staking you. However if you're talking about one of the challenge matches we have been watching on the stream from Texas then a saver is the norm with this type of match. It's more of an exhibition than anything else.

You really need to be careful throwing names out on this one, its how rumors get started. I took it from the original post that it was not a tournament match, but I could be wrong.

As far as players dumping, its one of the big faults in pool. I know people think pool needs a clean image to get more popular, but I dont agree if it means to stop the betting. It does need an honest image though, that way side betting could be done without fear. This is what I think would actually spark interest.

People bet on horses all the time. Do we think its because they like watching them run around the track? Nope, its about the excitement of betting. But it wouldnt be popular if they couldnt trust the horses to give their all to win the race.

You are talking about Galveston......

Care to elaborate which match you are referring to Troy??

SVB/Orcullo????

it wasnt that match..but most can figure out...i wasnt there but was told from somebody that watched the whole thing unfold..1 of the parties is a member..so not naming names just airing my feelings toward people that stoop to these measures

Frank...I agree with you, but you've been around a long time. Haven't you seen money matches that were dumped, because the railbird betting was lopsided? I have...

The players do not have any money involved in the challenge matches other than if they bet on the side. The winner gets $3500 and the loser get $1500. If I was a great player like the ones playing the challenge matches I would ask to make a saver to split the $5000 then bet on the side. As long as you didnt bet the whole $2500 you would still win something no matter what.

Great point, Woody! Makes you wonder, though, how SOME people just seem to KNOW which horse is gonna win...sometimes!

The question is, what are the code of ethics on outting a player that is notorious for chopping up their stakehorses?

Personally, I've had to protect a few close friends from getting in bad three handed golf games with KNOWN "partners" that sell out to each other. However, I do keep that dialogue very private and away from the table and other players. Railbirds are a gamble, though--do your own research; a fool and his money are soon parted. Ask around before getting the line on a match I say.

Really, though, the day I learned of those things in the game, as a student of the human moves, it really opened my eyes to deliberate thievery, cowardice, and stalking of any sizeable player. People and players can be cruel, especially when it's solely about the money.

Mind you it's been rumored that a few pros have had similar accusations thrown at them--but there is no way for myself to validate the truth in that. It does make you wonder though....

The only reason i'm not throwing out names is because i wasnt there & the news came to me from somebody who was there..He swore to me that he saw the winning player chop money with the losing player that was getting staked...How is that innocent in any kind of way...I use to stake all kinds of players just for the action..it's crap like this that's narrowed it down to just a select few.

I know your not putting names out there, I was more replying to the poster that did. Should have put it into a quote.

My bad.

Thats true, and Im not saying there has never been a fix on a horse race. But I think it would be much harder to do.

Most of the people that do well at the track do plenty of research before they lay down their cash. They sure arent picking the horses just because they like their names

ok...sorry..But like alot of people..I'd love to see pool cleaned up & move forward..and as long as this kind of stuff keeps going on pool will never see the money that it deserves.

I've seen plenty of what you say but I've always had to much pride to be involved with them.
I've even been asked to play a few times and they wanted to dump to me, but I've always refused. Not only is against good morals but also risky.

I totally agree..I've been approached before to stake matches that were going to be dumped & I NEVER did..because i wouldnt want it done to me..hustling..well right or wrong...i look at that differently..since the ones u hustle are trying to hustle u also..so it's kind of a game...Even tho the old hustling & sneaking around days are dead & gone..u just can't stay under radar the way you use to years back...just my take on this controversal subject.

Exactly how I feel about it. For pool to expand its going to take money from outside of our little world. If we look at some of the actions of players with open eyes, its easy to see why investors and sponsors would find other places to spend their money.
