Has anyone tried these readers for pool related topics?
I am thinking of buying the Amazon "Fire" and I was wondering if there is much content on billiards.
Do you like it?
What recomendations would you give?
Thanks

My lady and I are thinking about getting one of these, with their reduced price as compared to the traditional Kindle units.

The good news is that forward-thinking authors such as Freddy the Beard offers his titles on the Kindle! (At least that's what I seem to recall from Freddy, in this thread: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=160315 )

There is not much selection for pool currently. I have a kindle and very little is out there.

By the sounds of it, looks like i should do this, the sooner the better. Thanks for the info.

I agree. In that link I shared in post #2 above, Freddy shows the Amazon website navigation to list all the billiards titles available on the Kindle format. And this format is VERY popular -- more so than reading books on e.g. an iPhone or Droid -- because you don't have the typical distractions associated with a smartphone or PDA, like email and TXT messaging and, well, the phone itself.

Additionally, what's nice about Kindle, is that you can lay it down on the pool table, and "it stays flat" -- unlike most non-spiral-bound books.

In fact, before Freddy announced he was converting his titles to Kindle format, I'd taken my copies of Banking with the Beard and Gospool to the local Staples center, to have the binding sliced off, hole-punch the entire book, and spiral-bind it -- all so it would lay flat on a pool table while I practiced shots. The Kindle obviates all that.

I think it's a great idea to convert your book to Kindle format. FYI, you should offer a "grandfather clause" to those that've already purchased your book in printed form. ;)

imo if you're going to be mainly reading, then the regular kindle will probably be enough of a tablet for your needs if you want to spend less money. the fire is designed for reading as well as other multimedia (photo/video/games).

Sound advice above.... Don't spend over 100 if looking for just a reader....

Below is a link to the Kindle Fire that already has well over 400 reviews to scan over.... At $199, this is by far your best bang for your buck.... They're calling it "Ipad killer" or "poor man's Ipad"

Actually, watching world class pool has helped my game more than anything.... You have a huge amount of matches to choose from free of charge through either youtube or ustream....

I put a playlist together of my 100 fav matches on youtube.... Just haven't figured out a way to post the link on here to share it with all the fellow azer's.....

There will also be an ap put out on the fire for netflix and pandora which I'm a junky for both.....

I'll be totally honest...

The Kindle Fire is FAR from an "iPad Killer". But... it is a close second. It very well could be the "______ killer" (insert pretty much any other tablet manufacturer in there).

I have an iPad and have played around a LOT with a Kindle Fire because I work in publishing and do a good amount of work on ebooks. A quick search on Amazon will bring up a NUMBER of pool and billiard related ebooks. Everything from Jay Helfert's book to Pool and Billiards for Dummies (published by the company I work for... shameless plug). Kindle Fire is pretty cool, especially if you're an Amazon Prime member. That'll give you access to thousands of movies, tv shows, magazines, etc..

But (and this is a BIG but) it does have some BIG flaws. If you're using it as JUST an eReader, you're better off with a regular Kindle. The prices nowadays are as low as $79. You won't get the color screen but... you won't really need it if its sole purpose is for reading books.

The color screen on the fire is good for viewing movies and tv shows. But when it comes to things like magazines, you'll have a hard time reading them. The magazine pages often appear super tiny due to the layout most magazines have.

If you intend to use it for email purposes, its 50/50. If you have access to a wireless network throughout most of the day, its perfect. You can connect directly to your email server and respond to emails all day. You can even surf the web. If you're not around a wireless network, you're out of luck. No email. And since it has no camera, forget the idea of video conferencing.

The 8GB memory is pretty good because, as a reader, you can store A LOT in 8GB or less. But if you store movies and tv shows (as well as music), you'll watch that memory get eaten up pretty fast.

All in all, its a GREAT product, depending on what you plan to use it for. Best advice... if JUST looking for a reader, get an standard Kindle. MUCH cheaper.

But if you're REALLY into the color tablet thing and all the bells and whistles that come with it, either invest in the iPad or do what I recommend with almost every big tech product upon launch: WAIT! We live in a time where improvements and 2.0s are in the works BEFORE the first incarnation of a product even hits the shelves!!! Give it time and you'll likely see a LOT of improvements to Kindle Fire. Still, a great product. Just limited. (That being said, the iPad has its limits too.)

oh yeah i almost forgot...battery life is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better on a regular kindle vs the Fire if you're JUST reading, and easier on the eyes especially if you happen to be outdoors sitting on the beach or something

cool subject , i am looking for a tablet for me and maybe I Pad for my girlfriend , the main thing im looking for is to be able to see TAR matches and ACCUSTATS pool matches , im hoping the kindle fire can do that , and yes id like to read more ....

one of the coolest pool-related things i've seen someone do with a tablet is use their ipad to record their matches during the BCA nationals this year. the long seating tables that are set up along the pool tables are the perfect height to record everything in full view, by standing the ipad vertically with the camera pointed right at the table.

Hoping for Justin or someone from the ppv companies to jump in here and tell us if we can get their ppv on the Kindle Fire. Johnnyt

For video, dump the Kindle and get a Barnes & Noble nook tablet. It is twice the machine compared to a Kindle for only 50 bucks more. Plus the nook tablet comes with a power cord and wall plug.

Look up the specs of the two machines. Then go to BN and take one for a test drive.

You can get free tech support at any of the 700+ BN stores in America. What kind of free tech support does Amazon offer?

:angry::angry::angry:
My wife can't wait a day to spend money. She just bought the "Fire". Johnnyt

Amazon has spent a sizzleton of money advertising the Fire. I can not blame her. She may have never heard of the nook tablet. BN needs to advertise more because their product is superior.

What is the return policy on the Fire?

Not going to argue with her...it's her money:wink:. I have my own money. It's worked out great for over 40 years. Johnnyt
