Earl is a champion

I Have Been A Earl Basher; Getting A New View At Mosconi

earl is a great player. at 1 time earl was 1 of the best players in the world! earl gives 110% everytime he goes out there! the problem is when earls 110% isnt good enough to win thats when he gets upset! i was there when shane pounded earl and i wish all of you could have been in that room after he got beat! he was the epitamy of polite and was grecious in defeat! had nothing bad to say about anyone! he evan explained how diffacult it was to go from the best to being average on tour! and if you would of been there you would of seen a champion player from the past! passing the torch to a young kid that looked up to him for 15 years! when he stated that he never thought his record of 5 open titles could be beat, and he turned his head and looked at shane and said,"but this kid he was born to play pool, and he might just win the next 5 in a row,and i hope he does" and that is why i say earl is still a champion!

EARL HAS MISSED SOME SHOTS BUT HAD FEW OPPORUNITIES TO SHOW STUFF DUE TO THE ROTATION STYLE SO FAR; HE HAS BEEN FRUSTRATED BUT HAS BEEN A CLASS ACT. THE MATCH "PEARL" AND RODNEY WON WAS

HUGE

EARL IS FOR USA AND SO I AM FOR OUR ENTIRE TEAAM

I would say 99% at the very least.

I'd go as far as to say 100% of all the AZ'ers that come on here and trash talk him; not that I agree with his behavior when he gets into "that" mode.

yup, he is the best 9 ball player ever. he might not have won as much or stayed on top long as some guys, BUT he playes the game better-he has more horse power than anyone ever, I was watching him tonight smacking balls around(i was 15' away) it was quite in the room no one else was around and when he hit the balls it sounded better than anyone can make the cue, balls, pockets the whole shot sounded betterthan anyone can make a shot sound, no one has the stroke he has. when you can make the balls sound different than anyone else thats something special. i wish him happyness

You are so right Fatboy! About 12 years ago I went through greensboro? NC or something like that and Earl walked in and started hitting one shot over and over again that still boggles my mind. He made the shot every time and got the english. I wish I could set up one of those pool tables to show how extreme it was. I have a pretty poweful stroke myself but it amazed me how straight his stroke was with that much english. Sick is about all you can say about it.

it really is alright. it really is ok too that there aren't too many mood swinging earl's around pro pool, tv especially. he should become a bca captain and feel good about going to the riviera.

Actually, pool would be A LOT better off from a viewership point of view if there were 10 MORE EARLS!

Doesn't anyone remember McEnroe and "Nasty" and Jimmy Connors and what they did to SKYROCKET the popularity of tennis???

McEncore did EVERYTHING that Earl has ever done and more and became a LEGEND and now that the "bad boys" are gone, tennis popularity has gone into the dumpster.

I can't WAIT until he smashes another cue! It's THEATER...ITS SHOWBIZ people!!!

GO EARL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Earl is not too old to play great again. His mental game (it seems to me) is what is hurting his performance. Everyone enjoys recognition, but I think Earl does more than average. He once commented something like: "The main reason I'm playing in this tournament is that it's on TV and I haven't been getting much exposure lately. I used to be a household name."

I think some of his antics are designed to get attention that he once got from being so dominant. I firmly believe (and hope) that if Earl can change his mental game, so that the only thing he is concentrating on is his play, he can be as good as he ever was. Push all the negativity away, don't blow up after a mistake, don't beat yourself up. If he does that he will be giving himself the best chance to play his best. That's what his fans want to see.

Nice post, For me Earl is my idol. I like him so much. if you ask me i'd say that I'm proud to be born to see this living legend, seriously but he gives this game so much of his life, he even once said in an interview that he loves pool more than he loves women, and more than anything else in the world. :O and as you can see, when he's playing for america. he really want to preform, and give the game absulotly 110% of his focus. Go earl! :)

Hi,
He actually told me 17-18 years ago( lexington,KY) that he wanted to be McEnroe of pool.Based on his statement is is possible that his display of emotions is more a theatric/showbitz to generate the revenue at the gate for the promoter of any tournament rather than he really loosing control of himself.I will never know the truth.
one thing I know about Earl is:He is a man of principles and I respect that:cool:

Earl Strickland is a living legend in our game and has earned my undying respect and admiration for two reasons

1) He is THE GREATEST 9 BALL PLAYER of the last 25-30 years - I mean look at the records - when Earl was on - nobody - NOBODY played the game like Earl.

2) He has the courage to fight through the current problems he is having in public while the rest of the world is busy tossing $hit balls at him.

IMO, Earl can still beat the world at any given time, all he needs is for the balls to start opening up right, and the confidence he had in 1991. For those that will say the confidence might come back but the skill is gone - you're out of your mind. Most of the people that criticize Earl haven't been alive long enough to learn half of what Earl has already forgotten.

It has always been real easy to talk major $hit about Earl from the stands or from behind the keyboard. On the table its a different story altogether. Earl will always be in my top 5 as a player and also as a person. For those that haven't taken the time to get to know "the person", you are missing out on getting to know a very nice, often misunderstood, and powerfully gifted man.

The thing here too is, Earl is a professional athlete (in my mind pool is a sport), he is in the twilight years of his career and its obviouis his best years are behind him. The man won 5 U.S. Open titles....that will take a while to break, even for Shane. Its probably pretty tough on a soul that something you have devoted your whole life to and something you have excelled above the majority of others at, is slowing slipping from you due to age and there is nothing you can do about it. Its something that all athletes, as well as most everyone, will have to go through. Not to mention that Earl is still as competetive as anyone alive. The guy has his flaws, but who doesnt? He is and will always be a Champion. JMO.

Very intuitive post. Anyone who's ever had a conversation with Earl has probably realized what a genuine guy he is-- almost to the point of being child-like. His simple fascination with anything related to the mechanics of pool playing is ever present. He's very inquisitive, and his honesty is both surprising and disarming.

Blackjack, I respect the way you put your thoughts and feelings on the line here in this medium regardless of anyone else's opinion. I'm not really a rah-rah kind of guy, but you get my support especially with your thoughts about EARL STRICKLAND.

Your post was a great read and many people should take notice of what you had to say.

THANKS!
