EARL STRICKLAND Returns to TEAM USA

Can you actually name a tourney that Earl was thrown out of? Can you name one tourney in which Earl actually fought anyone, let alone pushed anyone ?
American 14.1 Championship from 2 weeks ago. He was DQ'd for shoving Hunter Lombardo. This happened as he was about to lose to Albin in Round Robin play. He was already guaranteed to advance to the bracket rounds and guaranteed $$.

All this excitement over Earl playing, and all the naysayers. Reminds me a lot of the Judd Trump postings and naysayers awhile back. Boy, there was interest in that also, and probably everyone of you kept in close touch with that as it went along. Now we have Earl in the news and some love it, and some not, yet if Earl would be playing in a tournament any where close to where you lived, you would go through heck and high water to be able to go and watch the match. Same as this, win or loose, every one of you will for sure now be following this as closely as you are able. Earl is not going to embarrass himself, he more than anyone knows his abilities and where he stands in relationship to the other world players. To me the only question would be how he gets along with his team members, but with SVB supposedly wanting him on the team, their probably won't be any friction there. This could go either way, but the fact of the matter will be that it will be watched heavily.

Is there a video of this somewhere? I looked and could not find anything.

EARL STRICKLAND RETURNS TO TEAM USA

EARL STRICKLAND RETURNS TO TEAM USA

MOSCONI CUP October 26th, 2021
Mosconi Cup legend Earl Strickland will return to Team USA for the first time since 2013 at Alexandra Palace, London, December 7-10 as Jeremy Jones’ first wild card pick.
BUY YOUR TICKETS HERE
The Pearl has won the joint-most amount of Mosconi Cup titles with nine and will go on the hunt for a historic tenth under the guidance of Jones and vice-captain Shane Van Boening.
Strickland carries legendary status in the game and has given fans some of the Mosconi Cup’s finest ever moments from battling with snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan in 1996 to claiming MVP in 2005 as the USA beat Europe 11-6. He joins Van Boening and Skyler Woodward on the USA’s team so far with two more wild cards to be picked by Jones over the coming weeks. Europe’s Alex Lely has completed his side which consists of Albin Ouschan, David Alcaide, Jayson Shaw, Joshua Filler, and Eklent Kaçi.
“You’re playing for your country which is the most important thing. You’re playing for the love of the game and the competition is probably the most difficult in the world of pool. The pressure is difficult, you do not have a lot of time to prove yourself. Every shot is critical.” said Strickland.
“I still think I play as good as I ever did. Maybe my break isn’t as good as it once was. I still play a good game and I am capable of winning matches. That’s why I am not bowing out. If I knew I wasn’t capable of being a threat to win a match or point, then I would bow out and let someone else play. I can still play. I will be ready. I am healthy.”
“I didn’t really think I would be back again. I thought I had passed that point.” – Earl Strickland

No video, but there is an interesting interview video on facebook of Hunter calling out Earl to fight for whatever he gets from the mosconi cup...lol

Sounds like there's more to be told than what's being said here. Just saying.

They should just include Canada, since it is America vs. Europe.

Europe 746m vs U.S.A. 330m (add another 38m for Canada) .... hardly seems fair.

Shane, Skylar, Earl, Alex P, John Morra would be a good team

Obviously Earl could be replaced by a few other U.S. players... Oscar for instance.
We can't even go to Canada so ef em

Is there a video of this somewhere? I looked and could not find anything.

there's a video of the match but the incident with HL was out of screen. you can hear the buildup to it on the youtube match, completely irrational and earl-like. on the live stream i could hear the effing and mother-effing for a couple of minutes before he was thrown out. lou f on the forum witnessed it, i think also bobby c who sometimes posts here

Just last week he was DQ'd from the American 14.1 championship for exactly this. But in hindsight maybe that was staged for Matchroom.
So, once in the last 40 years. Hell, if this was MLB or NBA, he'd be getting a new multi-year, 50M contract and a medal ;) But, it's pool, so he gets a couple of bucks and an airplane ticket to merry ole England with so-called pool players up in arms about it.
Nice way to treat our legends and HOF players of the game, huh?

I'd rather take shit from Earl than a 100mph baseball in the brain. Heck, Earl called up a friend of mine, from my car, to give him shit for not coming to see him play. After 5 minutes of Earl calling him a "whipped puppy" for not leaving his girl to come watch him play, I took the phone back from Earl and my friend said "thank you". He loved every gosh damn minute of it. He's also a poster here, so if he wants to give himself up regarding this, hopefully he posts in this thread.

It's not that shocking that Earl was picked, and it will surely generate ratings for Matchroom. If it compromised the chances of Team USA, this year, it is not by much, as any team that the US put together would be a heavy underdog.

All that said, this pick is a joke. Participation in events on the US Pool calendar should be a requisite for selection, and Earl barely ever competes in US based events. The Mosconi spot has always been a big incentive for American hopeful to compete as often as possible, but now, a precedent has been set that a Mosconi Cup spot is available to those that compete as well as those who do not. It sends out the wrong message to those who aspire to earn a spot on the team and one must wonder what the criteria really are for inclusion on the team. Of course, this renders ridiculous the recent Matchroom announcement that Justin Bergman would not be considered for a Team USA spot because he wasn't committed to being a full-time professional pool player.

This selection devalues the US based pool events, which are seemingly no longer the stepping stone to Mosconi selection, and that's not good news for pro pool in America, and it may hurt participation levels down the road.

Let's see if success in Matchroom events ultimately figures in the selection process. At the World Pool Championships, the only three Americans reaching stage 2 were Shane, Skyler and Jeremy Sossei. A Sossei pick for Team USA might soften the blow for me. Then again, maybe performance by Americans in Europe-based events is also not weighed in evidence when the picks are made.

The only possible justification for this selection is that another massacre like we got in 2020 at the Mosconi would endanger the continuation of the Mosconi Cup itself by causing poor viewer ratings. Perhaps that's the reasoning here, and if so, America has shot itself in the foot by failing to nurture and develop new talent in professional pool.
Nice post sjm. You are exactly right that players like Jeremy Sossei should be given a chance. Jeremy went the deepest for the USA in the World Pool Championship, if I recall correctly and choosing Earl over someone like him is a joke and does nothing for the future of pool in the USA.

The guy is 60 years old for Christ`s sake. He will be lucky not to be humiliated........ And he can currently run 3 racks easily today.
Look, the only thing that can piss off Earl is EARL.
He seems to have a switch ,or gate in his mind that at some important point in the match he either grinds it out or burns it down. Either way: It is Earl being hard on EARL! (The picking on fans & opps is usually from something they say/do after Earl gets on himself).
He thrives on defense/kicking and i have seen him wear down opps in a safety battle. He can be down 1-3 in a race to 5, and run 3 racks straight,TODAY.
It all depends on that "switch."
As for MR picking him, sure...... like why not?? Either way Earl goes it is a draw for viewership. I personally don't like the effect an "Earl Breakdown," has on the appearance of American pool on the International scene, but until the competitive format changes: (ie: Including Asia and possibly Russia into the EURO team), then it's all about the short race, luck, and entertainment.
Go EARL!

I would love to see Jeremy Sossei in the MC, but I think there may still be some angst from a few years ago.

Is he in shape to go 12 rounds? Whose his corner man. No blows below the belt. Go to the opposite corner on a knockdown. Ding! Ding! Ding!

shane is not the captain though. and what happened at the 14.1 was directed at a fellow american player. so that doesn't make sense
SVB isn’t a captain(given a choice)-not his bag.and that’s perfect, let JJ do his job, so Shane can go rob what ever matches JJ picks for him to play. No distinctions for SVB is key

He’s the heavy firepower when needed. He’s best left alone

SVB is a good friend for 14-15 years. He doesn’t to get too involved, he wants to play great pool and win. All the chatter and noise beh the scenes gets hectic. He’s tired of it,

Earls
The Matchroom promo video for Earl's selection begins with him breaking his cue and then is a montage of his crazy behavior. This has nothing to do with shooting pool.
great point, let’s hope they take the high road going forward.

I get the fact they want “sizzle” breaking a cue in pool is like a crash(less often a crash) in F1 racing. Maybe who chose that video wasn’t a player or knowledgeable about pool and though it was exciting. Not making excuses for MR-that was a very poor choice.

Like I said I hope I’m wrong and Earls presence benefits our team. That would be amazing. He’s dedicated so much to pool, love or hate him-he’s FUN to watch play. I don’t like the outburst’s either. But he’s more fun to sweat than the milk drinkers🥛🥛. And when he catches that high gear wow, just wow.

I’m glad he’s going

Then sell you car, boat, house, and mortgage your two kids and bet against Earl through out the Cup. I mean, what do you have to lose? Show us you will put your money where your mouth is. You will be RICH. So, you should be happy, right?
I wish it was so simple. 😀

I’m probably going to make a few Earl and SVB prop bets. I’m not betting on America to win, sad to say. I just don’t think we can fade it.

Fatboy😟

The ideal outcome here is that Earl puts on a bit of a show, nothing too crazy, AND plays world-class pool. He's still capable of it. Perhaps he will actually fare okay mentally knowing that he's "supposed to" blow up or at least everyone is expecting him to. That might actually have the opposite effect and instead he will just play his game.

I think the Earl video is great, adds drama to the MC - I'd rather see a player smash a cue than attend a church service, just sayin

Drama brings views and views bring $$$

At least it's a happy thought to hold on to for a while.
