Earl Strickland Us Open Champion 2007

I might just throw you a twenty spot at a hundred to one, also. Go, you big red-headed runout machine! Unless I draw you. Then, I am going slow play you and rack them Juuuuuust a little cocked to the left. I just gave you my Earl strategy. I'll have to change it up, now.

From what I've seen and heard of Earl lately, his game has fallen off quite a bit. Don't know if it's mental or what. I would give him a little more than zero chance, he's still under 50 years old. How much chance did people give Jack Nicklaus in the 86 Masters. Or George Foreman in regaining the heavyweight title at 40+ years of age. I'll be a sucker and take a little sweat bet at 100-1.

HEY Punter,
Go find your own pond to fish in. :D

I like you Joey, but Earl has ZERO chance. His time has come and gone. He WAS a great one though!

I like you Jay and respect you a ton, BUT (you knew there was going to be a "but", didn't you?) I also think that Earl has another major left in him as well.

On paper, he's had a dismal tournament record as of late. But, pool isn't played on paper, it's played "in the arena", whether that be in a major tournament or your basement. I think Earl plays better when the stakes are greatest. How better to silence his critics and validate his (and many of his fans) belief that he can still play with the greats than to pull off another major.

Ali was thought to have no chance against Foreman, and look what happened. Strickland seems to be on the downside of his peak as a player, but he's one of these generational phenoms that can still surprise a lot of people with his talents. He's not going to be a favorite to win, but I really do believe he does have a chance. But,it will be won or lost between his ears before he even joins his cue together.

As for me, I would be thrilled to see him bag another one. I'll definitely be cheering him on.

Thanks Jay. I like you too. I have always been an optimist and while the chances are EXREMELY SLIM for ANYONE to win the U.S. Open even once, I have hope that Earl has one more major left in him.

By your post I can only imagine that your realistic odds against him winning this year's U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship must be in the hundreds to one, eh? :D :D :D :D :D :D

GO EARL! :D

Not hundreds, but maybe 20-1. The favorites like Niels, Thorsten and Johnny and a couple of others may be something like 5 or 6 to 1.

Geeze man, that doesn't sound like a zero chance odds. :p
Just messin' with ya man.

I don't want your money unless it's on the rectangular slate. :D

OK, but don't ask me about banks unless I spank you real good at some other game. Then we can talk. :D :D

I am Earl's number one fan (nobody else! :P) and of course he still has another us open in him. bottom line is if he is in the mood and feeling it, he's arguably the best player in the world and to ever hold a cue. simple. i can't wait for him to stick two fingers up to his critics come the open and seeing him play some fluid beautiful god-like nine ball.

EARL THE PEARL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Earl can definitely win another US Open if somebody would remind him to take
his meds regularly. Loose Screws Syndrome is very difficult to keep in check... :D

I am one of his biggest fans and really hope he will win another one, but not this year!

I have a bet with Jay Helfert on the Open. He picks the Filipinos, I stick with the Europeans.

We can play One Pocket first. Okay?

I'm going for a Brit to win it this year.

Please excuse me for awhile, the nurse is here with my meds.

Thanks for reminding me! I forgot to take my daily dose of Prozac too!

My favorite Earl quote:

"You want to talk about heart? How about missing the cut in 17 straight tournaments and then winning the U.S. Open. How's that for heart. I hadn't played on Saturday since that guy beat me in New Jersey. I don't remember his name. But I couldn't get over that match. THERE HE IS! RIGHT THERE!"

Good luck Earl.

Some Strickland-quotes from Interpool Open, Sweden, in 2005:

"Soft players are toy players"

"You know what they say: they say I'm a borderline between genius and schizophrenic!"

"Hey, hey, hey! I don't want you touching the one-ball!" (Opponent racking
"You know who invented that? I sure as hell didn't. I tell you who invented that: Mika Immonen invented that shit.! -paus- "And Corey Deuel."

"I don't want you throwing the balls! Don't give me the balls if you're gonna throw the balls!" (Earl lost a game and the opponent "throws" the ball to Earl.) "If you're gonna throw the balls - throw them like this!" (Earl demonstrates how to do it properly).

"Now you know why I'm mad all the time! Because of people like that.... - paus - ... they don't even get it" (Earl about the spectors). The morning after, Sunday at 10, with no specators he said that this was how he liked it.

"In no other sport do the players keep the score!" (Earl forgot to change the score from 7 to 8)

"Tiger Woods gets paid for this, you know!" (Earl writing autographs)

"I thought it was a race to eleven - you should have stipulated that! Of all the talking you did - you didn't say that" (Earl to the tournament director. He didn't know he had won when he reached 9.)

"You can blame me. Everone else does." (His opponent is missing a shot.)
