Earl Strickland v/s BJ Ussery This Sunday (8/19/2007)

This might be the longest session Earl has played in 17 years. Win or lose it might just be the thing that brings the Pearl back to earth. Maybe he needs the grind to get it all out of his system.

That is one heck of a lot of weight for Earl to be giving to B.J., IMHO!

I made it home! Wow, that was rough. I had to leave around 4. I was starting to turn into a zombie and I had close to a 2 hour drive ahead of me. When I left Earl was up two games.

It was a very interesting and entertaining night. And my fingers are tired from all the post I was doing on my iphone. It started to get close to dieing and I had to conserve some battery for the ride home so I could have my navigation capability.

A few choice things that Earl said towards the end of the nights....

Talking in reference to all people that played on the IPT...

"If I was that IPT guy I would have stiffed them too! They don't deserve it. All they do is split it." Then he mentioned how that would never happen in Golf. Earl must love golf because he was comparing all pools failures to Golf and how superior it is. Then he went on to say about the IPT that he got blackballed because he didn't split? Something like that.

He then said...

"I'd rather be in Baghdad getting bombed than this place! Maybe all these idiots should be in Baghdad. They'd make great insurgents...' Talking about everyone in attendance.

"I'm unlucky f'n 99% of the time"

Yes Ladies and Gents.. Earl was on a roll! Twice he thought I said something that I didn't and man did he glare at me. I was the ONLY person in the audience that ever said good shot to him and that's the thanks I get? Haha.

At the beginning of the night there was a guy that was disrespectful towards Earl and a drunk girl was hollering Earl randomly and then went up to him and said something to him but Earl stared a hole through the table and never acknowledged her. Besides that nothing bad. He loves to make the audience hate him. If somebody did clap or say something nice to him I am for certain he would have told them to shutup or don't clap for him. The audience wasn't even clapping or saying good shot to BJ either for that matter.

He also thought that the table was warped and that all the tables in the pool hall should be burned!

Here are some pictures of the action...

BJ was only getting the call 7 by the way. The very first break BJ had he called the 7 cross-side on the break and it banked of the rail and went straight in... Earl was not a happy camper.

Nice pictures Deadpoked. thanks.

I hope the first picture is from the warm-up. I cant imagine Earl will let his opponent stand like that on a shot during the match:D

Tell me, what is Earl wearing around his legs? Looks to big to be socks.. Is it knee protectors, like the one they use in volleyball? Or is it weights, to keep him from jumping on the table?

That picture was when Earl was finishing warming up and BJ was discussing a few last minute details about the match. Including telling Earl that he was not going to shark him and that he expected the same from him... Umm. That fell though.

Those are weights on his feet and all I can think of is that they remind him not kick people like me in teeth.

If you are very observant you might have noticed that Earl is wearing two seperate shirts in the photos... He changed shirts right there next to the table. A little surprising. Here are few other photos...

Wow, from looking at the pictures, I think I have been to this pool room before in Greensboro. It was about 3 years ago, though. When you walk in, the first thing you see is the bar straight ahead, and all the pool tables are over on the right.

A friend of ours from Virginia told us that there was a tournament going to take place at this Greensboro pool room, and so Keith and I traveled there early, got a hotel room the night before. We showed up the next day for the tournament. Not too many people had signed up, and the "tournament director" got mad and said he wasn't going to have the tournament and walked out.

Apparently, there was another tournament going on the same weekend in Raleigh, which is where everybody was playing. Keith and I are looking at each other, thinking, man, ain't this a nice deal. Here we are in Greensboro with nothing to do. It was too far to travel to Raleigh and get there on time for their tournament. :(

The locals at this pool room were very nice to us, seeing our plight. A regular patron came up to Keith and asked him if he'd be willing to play in a tournament with a lowered entry fee to $40 instead of 100 bucks, which was the original entry fee, and that maybe he could get a few players to play in a tournament with a lowered entry fee. Keith said that would be just fine. :p

So about 10 or 12 players, if memory serves me right, signed up for 40 bucks apiece. Keith won the tournament pretty easy. The only reason these locals signed up was because they felt bad that we had traveled there and the original TD quit and walked out. I will never forget this Carolina hospitality we received in Greensboro. :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again. There's nothing finer than a tournament in the Carolinas. It's the people that make it special. To me, it is a very different atmosphere down South than up North when it comes to pool. Southern charm, hospitality, and a whole lot of gamble, that's the South!

the second set was called off with the score EVEN . bj won the first and only set. they had made a provision to call off or pro rate the second set if no one had won it in an 8 hour period. bj was 5 ahead in the second set and earl got it all the way back to 3 ahead on his side, but again they quit at even. tons of action at shooters tonight, i lost 300 betting on earl but also won 1200 playing 9 ball 200 a game and made 1500 more racing someone else to 7,300 a set. the guy i won the 1200 from was down 8000 last i heard(about 6:30 am) playing 8 ball one handed against chews stakehorse playing 2 handed,2000 a game. hows that for action? the same guy blew 4400 to scott lewis the night before. eric and trevor really have the action hot spot right now and everyone needs to come visit. jason

SAY WHAT!! I can't believe i missed all of that=( I appreciate your help with the potential sale of my cue. Did Fuller get any action???

I was there and watched the 1st set but due to bills and potential starvation i had to get home to sleep and pull a double shift. Anyway B.J. scared the crap out of me on the 1st game, which i recorded, by missing the 7 in the side pocket. It was definitely a shot he would make 99 out of a 100. WHEW!! Anyhow he managed to knock off the mighty Earl in approx 3hrs...7 ahead with the 7 and the last 2. Which i must add the last 2 never became a factor....Good Job B.J.=)

Thanks Guys

Just wanted to thank everyone for the updates and am looking forward to the video tape of this match.

Drater, sounds like you have a helluva pool room up there and if I'm ever up that way, I'll drop in and say THANKS in person.

Do those ankle weights really convey any benefits? I would think that in an extra long match like this one, that the ankle weights might actually tire Earl out faster.

Great

It was great that a few people were able to bring us play by play and frequent updates. Sounds like the place was jumping and the action was great.

Thanks again, ken
