Childress

A Texas LEO just outside Childress gave me a personal escort to the Justice of the Peace's office many years ago. I was ticketed, paid my fine, and was on my way with about ten minutes lost. This was before mandatory insurance and I don't know if the ticket hit my record or they were splitting them up. Back then I got a ticket every time I went through Texas or southern Mississippi. I just considered it a toll and didn't sweat it.

Highaways in west texas are very tempting to speed. In 1985/86 I was in my fire engine red vette speeding at 135 miles/hour.some body might have called the police and in two towns cops were waiting for me at the out skirts of the town and they followed( escorted )me to the other side of the town.I felt honored for the escort they provided me.
Another time I was only going 90 miles/hour in my red vet when I started spinning, passed thru the ditch and ended my journey in the fields some where between Midland and bigspring,TX:cool:

My race car was down for the winter when I decided to top-end my 67 Stingray convertible with a later box stock 350. Floated the valves before I hit 140 and took the heads off at my business the next day. Put in a lil' cam and replaced the lifters. As I did, the set of small block heads sitting on the shelf for my race car caught my eye. Once I bolted them on there was no sense not putting the intake and carb on too since I had to take it all off to get the heads come Spring.

A few days later I am riding into work after the usual late night shooting pool and I swung out to pass a few cars on the two lane by Ryan Airport in a 55 zone. I didn't romp on it but as I eased down I started counting cars I was passing. When I got to thirteen I looked down at the speedometer. Oops! I was going almost a hundred faster than traffic and had to tuck back into tight traffic to dodge oncoming cars. I have been a fan of four wheel disk brakes forever more even on my trucks.

My vette had came with the 427 but like so many it had been blown and replaced with a factory smallblock before I got it. Always wanted one with the 427 or the other toy that I could have bought for $15k at the time, a 427 side-oiler Ford Cobra, the real deal not the Mustang.

The small block Chevy engine (283/327/350) was the best stock block motor ever made in America. It wasn't hard to pump 400+HP out of one of them, even 30-40 years ago. I bet your small block was pumping well over 400 (from the stock 300), with the head work (and a Holley four barrel carb). If you had a tall rear end like a 3.08, it would probably top 160 easy. If you could keep it on the ground. :D

We could get 190 on the back straightaway at Riverside in our A Production Vette, but it had a 454 with Aluminum heads, and a hi rise intake manifold and three 2 Barrels. And exhaust headers of course. I still turned faster times (by half a second) in the small block B Production Vette. It handled way better! We used to call them "sleds". You'd never flip a Vette. We had 'em down an inch from the ground, with opened up wheel wells and humongous rubber. We were racing against Shelby 350 Mustangs, 914-6 Porsches and 289 Cobras. Believe it or not, the C Production Porsches sometimes beat all the bigger cars. And we couldn't outrun a well set up Cobra either. They were faster.

Earl Strickland is a clown. I have never at any stage implied that clowns weren't entertaining.

If you want pool to be a serious sport then there is no place for the antics of Earl Strickland.

I have to disagree with this. All the "serious" sports have plenty of clowns. Those guys whose purpose seems to be not only playing the sport well, but giving people something to talk about! Terrell Owens, Dennis Rodman, Barry Bonds, Michael Vick, Ron Artest, etc.

The media loves these people... cause they have some serious personality to go along with some serious skill. And the fans love to go back and forth in discussions about them. Some fans love them, and some fans love to hate them. This is the root of all the drama that goes along with pro sports, and why people get so into it all!

Back to Earl... love him or hate him... but he's not bad for the sport. He gives us something to talk about. Who else's antics could generate a 21 page thread in just a few days?? ;-)

sorta straight line

In a straight line my hotrod 289 65 mustang 2+2 that I had put on a diet at roughly half the weight of the vettes would outrun either vette although one had the factory 365HP 327, the same as the fuel injection motor except with carb. With that super short stroke the Ford would wind forever. It easily pinned the speedometer at about 125 in third gear of a wide ratio four speed. Problem was with it still pulling hard a mile later in fourth gear I was touching grass on both sides of a wide two lane.

Until I was 25 I only owned two road machines that I never knew the top end of, that little mustang that would get airborne and a Norton 850 that would blow me off of it if I raised up high enough to see the speedometer. Sprint cars and late models on dirt were the most fun though, the straights seemed about fifty feet long when I was running good. Slide up to less than a foot of cushion against the wall, and it was time to set up for the next turn it seemed like a half second later.

If I ever have the time and money again I have promised myself one more street rod, something similar to the old superspeedway modifieds with a big block in it. As the old hemi radio commercials used to say an economy car, one that saves on time!

What was this thread about again? :D :D :D

It's a shame one of the best 9-Ball players in History has to ruin his legacy !
I consider him a good friend and coleague !
Earl may not understand or comprehend what he is doing to himself !
I wish I lived closer to him so I could help him in any way that I could !

In the late 80's and early 90's Earl used that negative energy to spur himself on. Now it just drags him down. In his day he was the best striker I've ever seen. He would hit a hard stroke shot that would take the wind out of his opponant. Seems like he has zero confidence right now.

Earl is either a 14K a$$hole, or dumb enough to believe someone who told him his tournament B.S. is what fans want.[/COLOR]RL

Earl is still there...and we still love to talk about him...I think that's it in a nutshell. :)

Look, the sooner everyone realizes that whoever beats Earl is a luckbox... the better off we'll all be. You heard the man... Reyes was lucky and got away with murder on the table.

Reyes is so lucky, strong, blessed and fortunate....if Earl and Efren got arrested for any long-term offense, Earl would probably marry Efren for protection. That's how lucky and strong Efren is. Earl calls it how he sees it.
