Earl walked out @ GCCS

There are things that I wish I could tell you guys about Earl but I just can't. However, if I did some of you would understand some of what is going on and why he sometimes is a little crazy, mean, bad tempered etc. I know there are a couple of people here on the forums that know Earl VERY well and I am sure they could tell you some of the same things. Hell I work with Earl, I have spent hours in a minivan with him while on the road and I have seen all kinds of sides to him. Do not get me wrong here Earl and I get into it all the time for one thing or another. But the other side alot of you do not see. I am going to give you a example that may or may not mean anything at all to you about the other side of Earl. We arrived at a hotel one time there was a skinny little stray cat out side meowing at us. The cat didn't look good at all and we all commented on it.
a couple hours go by and I need to speak with Earl so I go to his room. he opens the door and there is the cat he says "Quick close the door no pets allowed in here" He has set up a bowl of water and 5 cans of tuna lines upfor the cat. He has a kind heart Iguess is the point I am making and is not always the A Hole you think. Howerver by his own admission he can be a A- Hole alot. There is much more to this this guy than most of you know and to a point I can understand. RickS who posts here regularly can attest. I have not had the conversation with him but he is one of Earls best friends and I am also sure that he has wanted to smack him in the face a time or two. Someone else said Genius and madman. Its true. If he was a painter and was a genius in that department and every now and then threw a fit people would say "Oh he is an artist" I guess you can get away with being borderline in any other profession.
Last thing, I know I am sticking up for him here but I am also sometimes disgusted with his behaviour and the negative he has brought on the spot at times.

I knew their was something special about Earl, he is a cat person!!!!! And he plays pool pretty darn good too.:D

You can be a whiner and a cry baby and still be a good person. I'm sure Earl has a good side. I really don't think he is a bad person, just a poor sport. He is not the first or the last in a long line of sportsmen who act poorly.

If you look at the WWE, you will always find a villain. It is just human nature to be drawn to conflict. Earl plays and fills this role in the pool world.

Would it be okay for him to spit on someone in the crowd? Would it be acceptable for him to punch a fan? Would it be okay to throw a chair at the ref? These are all examples from other sports: a) Charles Barkley b) Ron Artest c) Bob Knight.

I'm a Bob Knight fan, by the way, but I don't condone some of his actions. I think the good in Bob out ways the bad and this could be the same for Earl.
Coach Knight ran a clean program, made his players graduate, was a generous giver to charity, and an extremely successful coach.

Earls not going to change and I really don't think he wants to. If this is the last thread I ever read about him, it would still be too many.

Don't take it out of context !!
I meant major wins in pool vs major wins in golf .
Thats all

Earl always claims to have the answers to "fix" pool. In my opinion Earl has done more to set this sport back than any other single player. From his antics at the old Ceasar's tournaments refusing to sign a release to have ESPN televise the finals, to quitting in a live finals on ESPN. No wonder we never get to watch men's poll on TV anymore.

Earl needs to grow up and quit acting like a spoiled little brat.

The rise or fall of Pool is much bigger then any one man.

So you say but often the actions of one man in a pivotal situation can make a positive or a negative difference.

RJR was NOT HAPPY about Earl quitting in the finals. NOT HAPPY at all.

Don Mackey acting like he held the upper hand in negotiations with ESPN caused them to walk away from the MPBA at the time.

I hate to say this but Earl having a rough time .
I heard Kim was less than pleased with his antic's .
During tournament play he had sweep the balls off the table after making bad shots and couple of times .
Some time around 7:30 pm he broke his cue down and left in the middle of a match last night .
I like Earl and I hope he gets his head together SOON !!

Is there video of this?

.

RJR wasn't happy, for sure. That's why Earl was suspended from the following tournament in Charlotte. But that isn't why they dropped sponsorship. The government told them they could only sponsor one sport, and they chose NASCAR over pool. Go figure!

I don't know the details of the ESPN negotiations, so I can't intelligently comment on that part.

But Earl doesn't determine what happens with pool. The hardcore fans here on AZ all have opinions, but we all watch him, and we all talk about him. Just look at the replies whenever someone posts an "Earl" thread.
The rest of the world (99% of the 270,000 APA members) don't even know or care who he is.

I agree with all of this. I'd wandered down to table 12 because Earl was playing a match there. I've seen Earl play and when he's good, he's great. Even if his game is off there's a chance for some entertainment. He was matched up against a player I didn't know, Jamison Neu.

It was a very good match. Earl started off quiet but then he began making comments about slow players, no shot clocks and such. This was apparently left over anger from his match with Tony Crosby, nothing to do with the current match. Jamison handled it all perfectly. Didn't get rattled, didn't let it get to him, he just bantered back at Earl and made his shots.

That's the first time I noticed that he lines up his cue under his right eye. Feijen does the same thing.

I didn't... there was nothing more you wrote in your original post that would change this statement.

If you meant to say you were only talking about wins , that's another story. Beyond wins, they are polar opposites. Tiger has elevated golf to new heights, and Earl has driven pool to new lows.

If everyone would just be silent whenever Earl goes nuts at an event he'd go away peacefully like he should. There was nobody I'd rather watch then Earl before he went completly on tilt. Now it's time for him to bow out or stop the BS. Not many can stomach it anymore. Johnnyt

I NEVER had a problem with Earl, even last year in Phoenix. He knows he can't get away with that stuff when I'm working an event. I dealt with him many times in the 80's and 90's when he was still at the peak of his game. I respect Earl and his abilities, but there is a place I draw the line as a TD, and Earl knows that. Let's just say we respect each other.

They need to hire you as Earl wrangler for major events. His skill is so supernatural sometimes that I can't help but love watching him. However, it gets absolutely ruined when he acts up. Having you there should fix it

If the topic is behavior, I've seen Tiger say "sh.." and throw his club after making a bad shot. And, if somebody was sharking him and the officials running the tournament didn't step in to stop it I don't doubt he would walk off the course, get in his car and drive away.

Not excusing what Earl does but he isn't the devil to Tiger's angel.

So you are saying Earl's opponent was sharking him and he got fed up with it? Or did the guy just need to take a leak a couple of times? We all know Earl likes to play fast and if his opponent was stalling to throw off Earl's game then I understand why he got fed up with it and walked out, that's something the T D should take care of. If the guy just took a quick leak a couple of times then Earl over reacted.

To be quite honest, I just noticed that the player was MIA more than once. And also noticed that Earl was pacing during this. I just kind of put 2 and 2 together.

No clue if it was intentional.

Earl needs to learn to suck it up and play like a gentleman when things get tough ! Either that or retire before being banned from playing in pro events all together

He has been banned from the Gem City Tournament!

"On a different note. The Tournament Disciplinary Committee has ruled that the conduct of Earl Strickland during tournament play was severely unsportsmanlike. He has been suspended indefinitely from any and all Gem City Tournaments and Events. The GCC Tournament Supervisors and The Marietta Billiard Club wish to express an apology to the players and the fans for his conduct."

That there is super cool of him, wish more people in the world showed that kind of empathy.
