When you ask the average guy who the best pool player that ever lived is, they will most likely answer with minnesota fats. Fats was full of bullshit and antics. Now you have earl who has won a number of championships and is full of antics.

I think Earl is great for what he has done and what he is doing.

Breaking news to you sir, class & classless dont mean the same thing, entertainment & ignorance are a world apart also.Earl is a great player hands down but to confuse talent & class & fats & earl is a world apart.

Seriously, don't even go there. While Earl is undeniably a good player...there's noone that can replace Fats. My personal opinion: You don't have to like a player to acknowledge their skill.

But that's like saying Peyton Manning will replace Dan Marino as a great quarterback. You can't replace icons like that, you can only secure your own position in the history of the game.

Average guy??

I'm thinking the average guy with just a bare minimum of pool history knowledge would say Mosconi more often than Fats when asked about the greatest player in pool history......if the question were greatest hustler, then Fats would get the nod.

nope

.........I would think Earl would be more likened to Mosconi; He was a master at his game-straight pool, while Earl is a master at 9-ball.......I have heard more than once that Mosconi was not really well-liked; if that's true, Earl's got something in common with him........although Earl seems to have as many fans as detractors........

Not likely. The fans loved Fats! He had them eating out of his hand. He was as different from Earl as night and day. In fact I would say Earl is exactly the opposite of Fats. And he will never achieve even a fraction of Fat's fame or financial success. Comparing Fats and Earl is like comparing a Mercedes to a Yugo.

I think Jeanette Lee is this generation's Minnesota Fats. She has done alot promote herself, and to the non-pool playing public, she is the face of pool.

If you were to approach someone who don't play pool, I bet you they're likely name the Black Widow than Mika, Darren Appleton, Mike Sigel, or Mika.

I see Earl as the John McEnroe, enfant terrible, of our sport. That's how I explain it to people, and they get the association instantly.

Wow, that's kinda cold .. I mean Earl did win 6 world championships and 5 US Open's....not really sure Yugo ever won Car of the Year? Not to mention playing championship quality pool at the ripe age of 50 !

You don't have to like him, but geez, not even an ounce of respect?? Did he rob you or something years ago ??

Earl has nothing but a pathetic gangsta/playa gimmick that distracts his opponents. He doesn't have the1/1,000,000,000 the amount of character of Fats or any other legend. The best thing a player can say to himself is at the end of the game if he loses is, "I lost with style, with respect for my opponent and dignity in myself". If he wins then , "I feel honored to have shot against an opponent such as this, I've learned alot about them as well as myself". Earl has yet to learn the that, I doubt he ever will.

The fact that Earl is an infinitely better pool player than Fats ever was, is nice, but meaningless. Fats could lose a televised match and claim he never lost a match in the interview and the public would love and believe him. He was the ultimate showman whose behavior and patter overshadowed his game. Earls behavior and patter also overshadow his game.

The public loved Fats in ways Earl couldn't compete. It isn't a matter of not liking or respecting Earls accomplishments, it's a matter of fact.

GREAT post rick,thread over!

Fats had every body smileing and laughing while he was winning their money, earl has people pulling their hair out, while he belittles them and curses at them for being there!totally two different personallities.

The difference between Earl and Fat's is much much more than what you have said above.

Fat's never won a Major event except in his imagination, remember he was a Hustler tournaments were not for him, and that is straight from the Fat mans mouth!!!!:)

Earl on the other hand is a World Champion and a World beater, he has won so many titles and events that I doubt he could even recount them all.!!!

Fats was truly full of antic's, Chicken, and certainly Full of Shit, now I am not taking anything away from Fatty, he could play pretty well at times during his life, but I do not believe he was every playing at Earls level except maybe at 1 Pocket and I kinda doubt that.

While earl is also full of antic's, he isn't full of Shit and when he says something he can back it up.

I am sorry, but I kinda think your comparison is an insult to Earl which I do not think he deserves or needs. Yes he has his problems, and yes he acts like an Ass at times, but he is a Champion and while I am not saying that his antics should be over looked, there are medical reasons and I suspect if Earl could control his actions all the time he would. But like I said we all have problems none of us are perfect and if some one doesn't like what they see they can always change the channel

No disrespect intended just had to clear my mind!!!!!

Exactly. Fats rarely competed at a professional level. Those silly television exhibition matches with Mosconi don't count for anything.

I'm not saying he didn't have significant talent as some uninformed people will say but he wasn't within a stone's throw of Earl's league.

Earl incurs animosity from some people and Fats didn't from most but that's because Fat's wasn't a competitor, he was an entertainer.

This is definitely "How To Be A Champion" University here tonight.

Not a chance.

Fats had a way with people and that is what made him so great. Fats wasn't the greatest at all games of billiards, but he was the best ever pool player to speak with the fans. Fats couldn't match up with the likes of a Luther Lassiter, or Mosconi for that matter in anything. On the other hand all achieved their ends. Wimpy and Willie are remembered by pool players and Fats is remembered by everyone.
