eBay steals

rambows

i know a guy who bought a "mottey" rosewood on rosewood cue........ended up being a gus szamboti.

another was an AZer buying an ivory jointed gus for under 3k just a few months ago.

BUT MY SCORE?:D

i bought 3 rambows for $800.
9 original shafts.
one was purpleheart.
one had an ivory butt.

heres the pics after they were cleaned up by paul rubino.

got a minimum of $1800 for each one.

(wish i still had the purpleheart......):(

Schon LTD

I recently picked up a new Schon LTD 906 for $475 delivered to my door. I think dealer wholesale is a couple hundred more than that.

I'm sure it can be made sufficiently hollow.

Good one!

I was curious because a friend of mine picked up a Dayton. He removed the bumper and no kidding the butt was hollow. Looked like you could put a cigar in the cue.

I bought a new Predator 314 shaft for $115.
A McDermott D12 for $135.
10 Moori tips for $79.50.
All included delivery just to mention a few...

I bought a mottey, with snakewood points, tiffany rings, real gold inlays etc on ebay about 2 years ago for $2600.00. The presentday cost to replace that cue new from mottey in the 6k range. Just got rid of it for $4500.

I was just wondering if anybody has any stories of great steals/deals they've gotten on eBay in the early years or even recently. It seems like now with the multi-million users that are on eBay everyday the chance of getting a "steal" on a rare cue are slim. I just thought some of the posters here might have been eBay buyers when it was just getting up and going and picked up some sweet cues for a song. It would be interesting to hear about what you were able to get and what you paid to get it.

While it was a lot of work, when I was really into e-bay, a couple of times a day I used to scour new "Buy it Now" listings for 30 minutes at a time at prime times, hitting the "refresh" button.

My best deal was an original ivory jointed Gus Szamboti worth about 7K - 8K and I paid $2500 buy it now (I was the 7th viewer) . I also once picked up a Huebler custom cue worth $1500 for $750 (I was the 3rd viewer), a $1000 JossWest for $600, I've picked up numerous cues at 20% - 30% below cash market value.

Bear in mind I've had hundreds of transactions on E-Bay for many years. These sort of bargains are few and far between. I've also picked up more than a few dogs. I bought what I thought was an old collectible Brunswick cue and a case for what I thought was a cheap $150 - turned out it was an import copy in a vinyl copycat case and I gave it away.

I was looking at the auction before you bought and saying to myself, "That can't really be a real one for this price, but if it is...." and BAM! Auction over after I refreshed the screen.... dammit.

Well ...

I am hesitate to buy a playing cue without stroking it first and not really knowing how it hits and the balance and feel to it, but I won an auction off Ebay (mostly a curiousity thing) for a J&J Break/jump cue for $27 with
$17.00 shipping for a $44.00 total. Felt like it was a bargain at the time, and feel it much more so now since I have had it many months and the performance I have gotten from it.

I even bought a 2nd shaft for it later on.

Have some guys now that won't play me unless they get the breaks and some ball(s). They tell me I break too good now. And it really has made the difference in winning some sets.

Just got a brand new Fury Jump Break for $115 w/ joint protectors and free shipping. I got a new Joss that retailed for $700 for $275. I have also found the Submit Best Offer to work pretty well. A lot of times people will reject the offer but I have gotten some really good deals this way too.

Hi Ross,

Sorry, I know my friend Greg Howard did the same thing.

I figured I would take the risk on that one. Many would have wondered if it was a real Szamboti, especially since it's a fairly early one. I instantly recognized the forearm because it was preactically the same as the ones he was making for Palmer, and I really, really wanted that as an example for future comparisons, so I can help other people ID them too.

Still, the seller knew he was taking a lot less than the cue was worth. It was painful for him to realize that. I chipped in a bunch of old comic books (nothing super valuable), which he collected with his son, to ease the pain (they had been in my garage for 30 years and I was doing nothing with them) but that was just a bonus to him, because they sold it fair and square on a Buy-It-Now.

Here's the cue. it's still in the original case. Did you know Gus and George Balasuhka both bought these cases from Palmer?

The pooltees ebay store is practically giving away shirts at $13 a piece. Get 'em before they're gone.

I got my Scruggs sneaky on ebay and a mcdermott cue and a cheapy case for 360 and I think it had a great deal to do with the guy's spelling, he spelled sneaky "sneeky" and I don't think he even put tim scruggs in the title so, needless to say, I was sitting there for the last couple of hours of the auction biting my nails and hitting F5 A LOT! LOL

Yep for every steal there are many who are stolen from. Chris, what's this guy thinking?

He even left good feedback. I wonder if he still thinks he got a good deal on this early Palmer? ;) :(
Early Palmer decal that is. I bet I sold that cue 20 times for no more then$80 during the late 90s.

A few months ago, I picked up a purpleheart 4 point full splice cue with a black butt, black joint and black wrap, 2 shafts. I was watching it and it was going off for around $60. It had a J or hook in the butt. I figured what the heck, the shafts should be worth that, and put a $75 bid in and won the cue.

Upon receipt and inspection of the cue, I found it to exhibit a high quality of workmanship in the cue, and it was obvious that the J had once been JC. I polished it up and removed the wrap where I found "Jensen 1989". While it was nothing more than a nice sneaky with a wrap and 2 shafts, it was worth much more than $75. I gave it to a friend in Alabama who now owns the pool room that I grew up in. He is a real Jensen cue nut and loves it.

This is so true. I once got a nice black aluminum briefcase for only 99 cents, simply because the seller had misspelled both 'aluminum' and 'briefcase'. So how did I find the item? I guess I must have misspelled it too ;^)

Best "steal" I ever heard of (perhaps here?) came from a pawn shop: a $1500 Richard Black for $75. Upon removing the rubber bumper cap, the new owner found $500 cash.

Whatever you do don't remove that $500 from the butt! It'll ruin the balance. Note that it's things like using C-notes instead of weight bolts that make many of these otherwise cheap-ass custom cues so expensive ;-)

Of course if you really need the cash out of there send the cue to me so I can carefully machine an exact weight-matched insert, for a mere $500.

That really doesn't lessen the pain, Chris... btw, check your pm's.

I boiught a set of wheels for a car for $250, sold them (unused by me) 6mos later for $575 on ebay. closest to a steal I ever got there.

I think that with the market as broad as it is, there aren't really any real deals on ebay, unless you are looking for something nobody else wants.
