According to the homepage article because San Miguel lost Title Sponsorship to Guiness or as the article states 'was not chosen by ESPN' but aren't they chosen by how much they bid?

Sardo use to sponsor everything but then the other rack makers started fighting back. That's just the way of business.

I think there is way too much politics getting into pool now and it is hurting the game.

This if true is a really bad idea. Busta and Efren should play and let the business forces fall where they may.

Remember when Jordan and company did the same in the olympics b/c Nike wasn't the sponsor of their basketball team ( the original Dream Team) ?
Well, Efren is the poster boy for San Miguel Beer. I would think SMB has something to do with Efren's decision.

No i dont remember that but if they had to WEAR the shoes while they played, that could be a totally different thing and a valid reason for them to express concern.

I'm sure Efren and Busta do not have to drink Guiness during the tournament.

Still Jordan and co. should have shut up and played.

Please note that the post stated that Aristeo "Butch" Puyat is mulling about excluding his 2 premiere players (Efren & Django) from the ESPN Tour. Also note that without the sponsorship of Puyat, many of the local filipino players would not have been able to join these international tournaments, and make a mark/name for themselves (thanks to the other newer sponsors).

Not to defend Puyat, he has a right to be angry as it is his business that is involved. As for Efren & Django, I believe that they will go with their sponsor's decision. Note that filipino players are primarily Action (money) Players .... and who funds them? Their sponsors.

Questions

Does ESPN run the tour? Did Guiness and San Miguel have to BID to be the MAJOR Sponsor? What's the deal?

I think associating an English beer with an Asian tour is not the smartest thing to do .... duh?

Efren, Bustamante & Puyat are in business too.

So this is about the beer sponsors? Guiness vs SMB? But Guiness is here in Europe, how come they compete with Asian ESPN? SMB is doing a good job with sponsoring pool, not Guiness. I don't see any Guiness pool sponsored here. I don't like to drink Guiness, looks like used oil and taste like sh*t.

Efren and Busta cannot fight Puyat- I didnt mean to imply that. Puyat should not hold them back and in the end, maybe he wont hopefully.

I don't think Puyat is fighting them.... they are all on the same team. All I'm saying is they are all Buisness men and should do whatever is in their own best interest.

Guinness is readily available in Asia as well as Europe

I don't see why can't an Irish beer sponsor an Asian Tour if it has its eyes on getting into the Asian market. Its all about business.

Who cares...play, don't play, cry, whine, whatever. That won't stop it and I certainly won't lose any sleep over it!

Valid point, but suppose Guinness sponsors the tour for a year and then drops it, and in the meantime San Miguel has found other places for their advertising money. What happens to the tour?

I am assuming it is for ESPN's broadcast here, so it does not matter where the beer is from, or what tour it is on. I agree that there is way too much politics here. It is unfair for another sponsor to be able to demand representation if another is willing to pay. What if players that liked Olhausen would only play on their tables. That would be totally unfair to all other table manufacturers. America is not built on these types of buisness practices. Obviously the phillipines are not america, but our companies should not fold to tactics like this. It is unfortunate that some players are trying to use their fame to force the issue. Michael was never able to force the NBA to make everyone wear Nikes and drink Gatorade. This is a ridiculous ploy at best.

How many times have we talked on this forum about the lack of sponsorship money being the primary ailment of the sport? Well, in the Phillipines guys like Puyat are the sponsorship money, not to mention the fact that Efren represents SMB and that Puyat clearly has at least, a friendly relationship with the company.

Further, if anyone thinks that there is no element of nationalism in this you completely misunderstand the cultural dynamic of Third World nations. San Miguel is a national institution in the Phillipines. It accounts for 4.5% of all tax revenue and 9 of every 10 bottles of beer, 60% of processed meat, and 40% of all poultry consumed in the Phillipines are produced by San Miguel). It is a natural fit in the Phillipines for SMB, a Filipino company, to sponsor the game that is the national passion. I find it hard to imagine that Filipinos in general would be pleased by the change to a foreign corporation, and you can be certain that this is not the last we will hear about Filipino players in regards to this issue. When you put all those factors together, who can possibly blame Efren or Bustamante if they boycott?

I'm a fan of Efren & Francisco, but this is bad for the sport.

Pool needs to find big money sponsors to become a legitimate sport. Guiness is a brand that is known world-wide, and they surely have a huge marketing budget. Now they have stepped up to the plate to spend some of that money on a pool tour. Guiness should be supported by the fans and the players for this decision and the players should do their best to see that Guiness gets their money's worth.

But what do they get for their money? Two of the most marketable players on the tour boycotting them. Whatever the politics are, I doubt that Guiness had anything to do with any of it.

Not only is Guiness probably regretting their investment in pool, but other potential sponsors will be turned off by this as well.

As long as professional pool players treat big sponsors like this, they will continue to be broke and not have the respect & stature of other sports figures.

I think your assuming wrong. The big broadcast money is in Asia and Europe. Certainly Asia on the Asia tour. We will rarely, if ever see an Asian tour event on ESPN here. Wish we could though. WPBA has most of that tied up. This is not a political or national issue, it is a business decision, albeit maybe a bad one for the sport. Be gentle, Efren is not just some player.

I don't think Efren and Busta are broke for one thing. Also, I don't think you can fault a person for supporting someone that supports you. Efren and Busta have been supported for years by SMB. Why would they support Guinness now? They shouldn't.

Also, I think you are looking at this from a very American perspective. Sure, professional pool in America is hurting. But worldwide, and especially in Asia and the Philippines, it is not. Therefore, they are making a good decision in supporting their local sponsor rather than an international sponsor. Don't most people in America bemoan the loss of small and local businesses? Of course. But when these two support theirs, we don't like it because it "hurts pool." But really, it is helping pool in the Philippines (in the long run), which is what they should be worried about.

For Puyat to holdback these two players, implies that the players are bigger than the sport itself. I am sure that if they do not play we will simply hear of other players climbing the fame mountain. So in the end...WHATEVER

How does it imply that? All it implies is that SMB is important to them. Do you think Jordan thought he was bigger than the sport itself when he boycotted?
