Efren & Appleton TODAY

gopi-1 posted a link in the US Open updates thread...here you go:

Personally, it looks like he was trying to kick the 4 into the 9 hoping to either make the 9 or (more likely) send the cue ball up-table. Looks like he missed hitting the 4 into the 9 and it wound up going 3 rails and accomplishing both tasks.

Even if the 9 hadn't dropped, it looked like Darren would've been hooked when he came to the table...

I think you are right.

If anyone thinks Efren played that shot to kick the 4 three rails then cut the nine in the side I would have to vehemently disagree.

The obvious shot there is to play the 4 directly into the nine for the dead bank cross side.

Yes, I agree with everything you say, except I think he was also trying to make the four ball and the four nine combo was secondary.

The BigTruck show shared a "SECRET" of the Filipinos concerning shots just like this a while back. Maybe Ray Hansen will drop in and share it again OR if you hear me doing commentary one day, jump in the chat and ask me and I'll tell you what Ray learned about situations just like this.

Anybody that thinks he went for this is out of their minds!! He kicked for the corner and hit it hard to create space between the 4 ball (if he missed) and the 5 which he played shape on. It just so happened to work out the way it did and nothing more. What can you say..... Even the magician gets lucky once and awhile :(

i'm pretty sure from the video that he did not play the 4,9 combo to the side.
he clearly marks where on the side rail will 4 ball will hit. either his trying to kick bank the 4 or... he played the nine...because of the speed.. also looks like he's expecting the nine. he always scratches his head whenever he flukes a shot. just my opinion.

^^ This ^^

Or maybe he was playing it in the same side, but playing the direct combination, not 3 rails into the 9. lol. The speed that he hit it makes me think he was probably playing the bank. If there is any one person on the planet that I would believe played an insanely creative shot, and actually pulled it off, it is Efren. However, I just can't believe that he would have played this shot like that.

Absolutely correct, Lux and Jimmy, I agree ! ...Efren did NOT hit the 4, where he meant too..If he had, he probably would not have even gotten safe..It was a PURE luck shot !...NOBODY, not even GOD, has THAT much magic...But, it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy..:)

I've watched that clip 100 times

I think it was on purpose. The shot looks too much like an Effren shot during a one pocket match, except this time he was going for the center pocket.

IMHO.;)

He was playing a two way shot, trying to kick the 4 into the corner and get shape on the 5 while leaving Appleton safe if he missed. Making the 9 was karma.

The cool thing about Efren is he still has the enthusiasm of a kid which is probably why he still plays at such a high level. I don't know anybody else his age who could make the finals of the world 14.1 and knock off Appleton in the U S Open in the same year.

Looks like he was playing the safe - cue ball uptable behind the blockers, 4 ball hits the long rail right where he pointed and stays downtable. If the 4 banks, he has shape on the 5.

What I find most amazing is how close he came to scratching in the side. He had to hit the long rail just above the side pocket, and he did it. That's an amazing play.

Anyone who thinks Efren was riding there 9 there is a banana short of a bunch.

He was playing to pocket the the 4 one rail knowing the high side of the 4 sends the cue ball up table, which was his main focus.

Btw, he did come pretty close to pocketing the 4 in one of the 2 lower pockets.

This!!!! Plus 1.
