Hey, that's Rolando in the background .
EFREN "Bata” Reyes’ magic continues to rake in the cash.

For the fourth time in the last five years, the Filipino pool icon emerged the top earner among the world's billiards players with accumulated earnings of $279,169 (about P14.8 million) for 2005.

The 51-year-old Reyes' purse was boosted by his biggest ever paycheck of $200,000, his prize for beating defending champion Mike Sigel of the United States in the finals of the 2005 International Pool Tour (IPT) King of the Hill 8-Ball Shoot Out last December 4 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Reyes, already enshrined in the billiards Hall of Fame, was joined by compatriots Marlon Manalo, Francisco "Django" Bustamante and Santos Sambajon in the top 10 of the 2005 Player Money List released by "Az Billiards.com" yesterday.

His eyesight improved by laser surgery early last year, Reyes also snared the Derby City Classic, 9-Ball and Master of the Table titles and topped the Japan Open and a San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour leg to duplicate his domination of the billiards circuit in 2001, 2002 and 2004. Reyes wound up third richest in 2003.

With the $100,000 prize for ruling the 2005 Texas Hold Em Billiards last December 12, Manalo wound up third behind Sigel ($250,000) with total winnings of $199,500.

Bustamante finished fourth, accumulating $140,272 following a third place finish in the IPT finals event that netted him $70,000 last December.

The US-based Sambajon, a native of Macalelon town in Quezon province, pocketed $89,669, including a $73,500 bonanza for topping the 2005 Skins Billiard Championships last October in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Rounding out the top 10 are No. 5 Allison Fisher of the US ($111,200); No. 6 and reigning World 9-Ball champion Wu Chia-ching of Chinese-Taipei ($109,500.); No. 7 Loree Jon Jones of the US ($105,500); No. 8 Johnny Archer of the US ($100,104) and No. 9 Thorsten Hohmann of Germany ($96,635).

Former world pool champion Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan, a triple-gold medalist in the 2005 Manila Southeast Asian Games, earned $80,824, bolstered by his US Open victory, worth $40,000, over fellow Filipino Jose "Amang" Parica last September in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Pagulayan, a native of Cabagan town in Isabela province, also took the top purse of $10,000 by ruling the SML Entertainment 9-Ball Championships last April in Calgary, Canada.

Sigel bested compatriot Loree Jon Jones in the finals of the IPT World 8-Ball Championships to bring home $150,000 last August in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jam, I dunno who that is.
He looks Asian though. LOL
Looks like a Japanese admirer to me.
Nice pic btw. Nice Justis case Efren has there.
Must be his "maswerte" ( lucky ) new case.

Not bad for a guy who didn't get out of the round robin in WPC and had lots of people saying he should retire before he embarasses himself.

nice winnings

I'm glad for Efren's success and winnings, but I wonder how much of it he actually gets to keep.....I suspect his sponsor must take a big chunk out of each winning amount........

No, he doesn't.
Efren's sponsor is Jose Puyat.
He owns Coronado Lanes in Manila. Huge bowling/pool place.
He owns one of the largest construction companies in Asia.
Also owns AMF down there .
He pays for Efren's plane tickets and takes ZERO from Efren.
Efren's problems are with uncle Sam and the leeches.

What problem does Efren have with Our Uncle Sam?

I don't think Efren has a problem with Uncle Sam. At most high-profile events with big payouts, our foreign comrades who do not have a Social Security number will have one-third taken out to ensure Uncle Sam does gets paid. All others who do have a Social Security number receive 100 percent of their winnings, but they will receive a 1099 at the end of the year.

I got the impression when I was in the phillipines and went to coronado lanes that Puyat got a cut of Efrens stake for sponsoring him, nothing wrong with that if it is the case. Given Efrens ability though Im suprised he doesn't back himself but maybe its a loyalty thing. One thing which could explain it though, I was told Efren was only allowed to play in corunado lanes and not at any other pool hall and he spent half the night signing cue balls while I was there which the club sold to willing punters. Maybe thats the deal, Efren in effect works for the club, promotion, merchandise etc and in return he gets sponsored but keeps his winnings? Anyone know for sure (not that its anyones business I guess!? )

I wonder that myself. A lot of top players give their managers at least 20 percent of their earnings. It might be different for Reyes and his buddies, Puyat is a well known sports godfather and businessman, could be x deal, play at Coronado, sign authographs, wear my shirts, do commercials in exchange for you have all your winnings plus all expenses paid with a monthly allowance of $??.???. But I think Reyes is more of Puyat's commercial model rather than managing him.

Coronado Lanes

this maybe off topic but:

Coronado Lanes in Makati is already closed... in fact it has been closed for 5-6 months now.. Efren's main "playground" now is in Efren's Magic in Makati also(Pasong Tamo ext.):)

Thanks JAM, it appear Our Uncle want Income Taxes Paid on Moneys Earned in the USA. Sound like Efren is getting the same treatment as you and me who just look so forward to 4/15 EACH YEAR.

Well if you are I were to got to where Efren live we would not be allowed to work, buy property, and a bunch of other knots. :)

Think someone should remind Efren that ENTRY in to the USA to play Pool., and Compete in Tournaments is NOT A RIGHT, but a Privilege. Think Efren is lucky to be afforded that Privilege.

As many would love to come to the U.S. to work, and live but we got a Quote system. All one need do is Visit the Mexican border with the U.S. to see the many who are trying to cross the border illegally for a chance to get into the U.S.

AS far as I know, Puyat does not get a cut off Efren's tourney money.
He's not involved in Efren's action either. I know who his big backer here is.

Those were some pretty respectable earnings, you sure they were earnings for pool players:)

Wonder how much moneyEfren made that was not reported as income, on shall we say NON Tournment Games. Or a 1099 was not issured for?

Does anybody have any details on Efren's eye surgery? Exactly what type and where he had it done, etc?

Is that supposed to be an excuse for the legitamacy of the US Federal taxation laws? A lamentable form of theft that never existed pre-1913, but has grown ever since and certainly (IMHO) represents the antithesis of why the US is still a leading land of opportunity.

Maybe Efren and his Philippino brothers should also take comfort in the wonderful US government's role in killing an approximated 1 million of his ancestors back in the early part of last century.

Don't mean to bring a downer to this thread, but I hate to see excuses made for government malfeasance.

I live in China where taxes are considerably lower than in the US these days. A large reason for the rapid growth here.

Don't get me wrong re the US. It led the world as a model of liberty and still is the great hope as being the beacon of liberty. Not for democracy (two wolves and a sheep voting n lunch), but for restraining the powers of government. But US citizens have been conned as to the role of government and the history of the nation.

Worst thing the US ever did is take on the Prussian Public education system and turn all the nations children into state prisoners/propogandists. Governments worldwide have recognised the benefits (for governments) of such schemes nowadays. The sheeples chew on clueless.
