Jeesh, how does one do that?
Down 10-1, Hopkins misses the 8 to seal it.
The world caved in on him?

My buddy who's in Vegas right now called me just after the match was over. He told the format was also alternate break (making the comeback even tougher) and Efren made some crazy shot on the 1-ball in the hill game to take the win. He actually left his seat since he thought the match was over, got something to eat, then came back only to witness a hill-hill match. I would have kicked myself for missing that comeback...

Prolly the same guy who missed Kirk Gibson's home run against the A's.
Agreed. Efren had to make 5 break points.

LOL! By the way, I got to talk to Efren a few weeks back and he mentioned that he got to talk to a friend of mine, in the US, named Frank. Was that you?

Considering the alternate break format, this is just as much an implosion on the part of Hopkins as it was a great comback for Efren.

But regardless, how well is Hopkins playing the past two days? He beat Chamat in the first round, and nearly whitewashed Efren. Nice to see him back in form.

I agree. If Hopkins shrugs off that loss, and keeps playing well, he'll definitely finish in the good dough.

I agree

Obviously a great comeback for Efren but it raises the question: How did he get down 10-1 to begin with when there was an alternating break format?

It does seem that Hopkins should have been able to get one win when he had five breaks during Efren's run too.

Actually, don't you guys think that getting up 10-1 on Efren is just about as tough as Efren coming back? The biggest thing about the comeback is the amount of heart it takes, for that many games, knowing if you miss an opportunity, just one ball that gets mis-hit, will cost you the match. But the again, if you're up that far, and the guy is coming back on you, it's easy to feel the extra pressure. That's where you have to learn to concentrate only on the shot at hand.
I'm not saying it's not a great comeback, so please don't take it that way. I've always enjoyed those matches. In 1985 I saw lower rated pro player get Mike Sigel stuck 9-2 going to 11. Sigel won 11-9. Just kept his head and kept grinding. Making sure not to leave the guy a 2 ball out. It was winner break too. Sam

I couldn't agree more, I've seen plenty of these comebacks in winner breaks format but for it to happen in the alternating breaks format requires somewhat of a meltdown on Hopkins part.

Well, in all fairness, it does take a bit of luck to win 10 in a row with alternate break against someone who is up 10-1 on you...lol. I would guess about as much luck as you would need to go up 10-1 on Efren! :D

the odds must be tremendous

Early in my pool playing experience, I reached the finals of a relatively small tournament....I was really elated and anticipating one of my first tournament wins....It was a race to 5, and I was ahead 4-0...after which I got real carefree and careless, (ordering a drink, talking to friends, etc.) not minding what my opponent was doing....well, you guessed it, I ended up losing 5-4......Man, did I ever feel like sh.... I can only imagine what Allen H. felt losing like this....

I'm a little confused about this. If the format is alternate breaks, something funny must have been happening on the break.

Either the table was stingy, or the layouts were real funny. Maybe they couldn't keep the cueball on the table. I don't know.

Something other than a great comeback has to have happened.

anybody get it on tape? i would love to see this....

and luck or not, efren is still the player on the winners side.

I did not witness the match, but was given descriptions from a couple very knowledgable people who watched it.

Allen was taking advantage of any mistake by Efren and playing great to get up 10-1. Allen had 3 very viable chances to end the match during Efren's comeback but couldn't seal the deal.

The last game saw Efren scratch on the break and leave what was described as a '1-9 combo from hell' with the 7 and 8 tied up. Allen went for the combo and missed it. The one ball ended up hanging in the jaws and Efren navigated the rack, broke out the 7-8 and won the match.

The truly sad part about this match is that this match is that it wasn't recorded. This comeback would have been a sure seller for ESPN if they had just turned the cameras on. I wish this match was one of the final matches so it would have been put on tape. Bummer.:(

It isn't that simple though. They don't prepare the arena for TV matches until Friday afternoon. Part of the preperation is to take 7 of the 8 tables out of the arena and then center the last table under the TV lights.

ESPN cameras are not even here yet.

This question is for AzHousePro (or anyone else too!). Efren's match (to go down 10-1 and win from that deficit) and the "Archer/Schmidt" match (11-0) seem a bit unusual for players of their caliber in an alternating break format. Does your friend know if there were unusal playing conditions (table breaking tough, tight pockets, humidity, etc.) or anything else that may have contributed?
