Eliminating luck, US Open 9-Ball

Ten Ball is not a bad idea

I noticed that they erased some of the rude unproductive posts made prior to my American Ignorance post, however they left my post untouched. Even hear at AZ we see that it is impossible to get away from the politics. Again if any person out there is interested in seeing rotation pool played correctly at the Open, I would suggest writing Berry and voicing your opinion about ten ball replacing the soft break 9 ball problem. As far as racking the 9 on the spot (playing 9 ball) that will not work either, then the one ball becomes almost wired in the side - with a little knowledge of the rack and an ugly (trick shot soft break.) If anyone can pocket a certain ball playing ten ball under normal conditions (loser rack) then I tip my hat to this person and more breaking power to them. I have said this before but I guess I'll be repetative, any player who will play nine ball but refuses to play ten ball is a rack mechanic.

These people suffer from a lack of talent and just want to try to shark and or deceive their opponent, the way to play rotation pool is winner break and the Ten Ball should and eventually will replace 9 ball in my humble opinion. Changing the fad of nine ball to Ten Ball will not fix the problems of pool however it would in my view make the players alot more happy and free from arguments. This in turn will help keep the peace and guarantee that the best player wins and not the player who enjoys the dreaded wing ball soft break of nine ball.

Very interesting! Royce for President!
What has worked somewhat successfully in Matchroom events is racking the nine ball on the spot. In other words moving the rack up a few inches. Now the corner ball hits above the corner pocket.

Jay, they did that in the WPBA for a while when they were using the Sardo, didn't they? As I recall it just wired the 1 in the side if hit at the correct speed.

In essence, the better player will win in Ten Ball and that's what our sport deserves and what our players skills cry out for. In nine ball, luck will have more influence upon the outcome unless it is a much longer race and that will not happen. The PGA chose to make their courses longer and in comparison it too made programming longer. I too agree the Open should be ''ten ball'' and just call it the US Open. Like I have said before, the PGA calls it the Masters, the Players call it the Open, and only to clarify they say US Open, they rarely use the words US Open Nine Ball, its the OPEN in Virginia.

Thank you Bigfoot

I kind of thought you would eventually come around Bill, thanks for being genuine. Bill was one of the great players that I had the pleasure to observe in the mid 80's and 90's, a true gentleman of our sport and a power house player. Great idea also to just call Berry's long standing event "The Open" as suggested from Bigfoot, thanks again Bill for NOT being politically correct and voicing your true opinion about the game we all know and love. I myself do not play golf at all, but please note that how we focus our energy in the game says alot about a players personality. When I play rack my own and I am racking I feel like I am trying to be clever and or outsmart the game, I am aware of the redundency of rack your own 9 ball and choose to focus my energy on winning instead of 'out witting' my opponent.

Well I would be willing to try and break under those conditions (twisting the rack.) But I have had my break clocked at over 30 mph, I would think this could be dangerous as what use to be the wing balls would take flight indeed. So I would again say that even under those conditions Royce that 9 ball lends itself to the soft break. I know too much about the rack playing 9 ball, once a good player from Florida hustled me to play some 9 ball. I gave him a counter - offer to play ten ball instead, he said no thanks. I learned later he was barred from Joss Northeast tour for a while cause he was being too fussy about the rack (imagine that.) There are only 1 of two reasons why he turned down my counter offer, either he was not physically strong enough to really break the balls (which I doubt) or he was a rack mechanic. Either way the last time I won against him he had a poor attitude, some want to argue and some want to play pool. Nine ball is in my opinion a small time gamblers game in which the rack and the break dominate about 90% of the game. I heard once that back in the 20's the word on the street was the bums played pool and the gentleman play Billiards, I would say that this is a fair analogy with the 9 and Ten Ball, some enjoy the drama and the chance to shark and or cheat. As for me I enjoy the ten ball, this is not to say that everyone who plays 9 ball is a bum.

Well, that iz Robb Saez for U  :p:sorry:

I still can't understand how 9 ball is the premiere game played by the pros to begin with. When pool was pool, champions were made by playing real pool, not carnival pool. Sad .... very sad.

Ok

The film "The Color Of Money" might have something to do with the 9 ball movement. But I am afraid cracking the break and parking the white ball is sadly in the past at the top flight modern day 9 ball events. Instead we have a soft break trick shot - which is truly redundent in my opinion, and having a 3rd party rack does introduce the politics.

After 14.1 they had to start somewhere. 9-Ball was action, fast paced and the 'sign of the times'....why it flipped to rotation pool, society one would guess.
