ENVY, The movie!

Rude Dog

<---Dumb and Dumber
Just sittin' here thinking about this movie I watched last night called "Envy", with Jack Black and Ben Stiller. I'd like a can of "Vapoorizer" to spray on some of these stupid pile of shit flame wars I've been reading on here. Almost any thread that gets more than 20 replies turns into shit. Excuse my language but I'm just tired of it. Will it ever stop? No, and I know this, but since this is a public forum I feel entitled to speak my opinion. When I have a problem with someone on here, I pm them. If it continues, then there's nothing I can do about it and I ignore it. When someone has a problem with something I say, feel free to pm me. Calling names and threats to others is not only childish, but plain stupid. Who's going to show up at my door if I give out my address and pay for the air fare to fight me? Nobody, that's who! Because it's just a bunch of words typed out on a computer behind a monitor in the comfort of your own home knowing that nothing will ever come of it because it's a waste of time. So why do it? If you see something on here that bothers you, pm the person that wrote it or leave it alone. Hell, pm me and tell me I'm an asshole, I don't care, because that's one on one. When it's put into a thread for everyone to see, then I have a problem with it and I will let you know. I don't intentionally disrespect anyone on here but I have received pm's about things I've said that was taken the wrong way and was cleared up, except for one. That one, LOL, ended with a nasty pm by me and now it's over. I hope. Anyway, to those of you that think this is directed at you, it is, but I won't mention any names. PM me if you have something negative to say to me, and you will get a reply. Or, show your true colors and reply to the thread and call me every name in the book. Maybe you'll catch me in a worse mood than I'm in now and I'll pm my address to you and wait for you on my porch, your choice. If anyone else is tired of this stuff going on, feel free to reply to the thread. Peace!!!

I'm with you all the way RD. Unfortunately you always hear people saying, "well just look at the large number of views on the flame threads - everybody really likes these threads." I have an alternate explanation. Because the flamers keep bickering back and forth, it keeps the thread near the top, and everybody needs to keep checking it out in case anyone is actually posting something germane to the initial thread. Of course, some probably enjoy the flaming, its one way to feel like a big man. I will say that some of these flame wars are fairly amusing, I don't take anything seriously though - it's just the internet.

Reminds me of the old Far Side comic with God at his workbench putting the last touches on the earth sprinkling with a shaker that on the side says “Jerks” the caption reads “just to make things interesting…”

Hey Rude Dog, why don't you tell us how you REALLY feel?

What's up buddy? You having a bad day? I know how you feel. You don't have to read on when it becomes a pissing contest. I don't. You might also notice it is usually the same postors  who keep the flame going. That's their thing. They think they are right.
Now, how the hell are ya? Hows your wife doing these days? Good I hope. :) Are you going to make it to Phoenix next week? I will be getting there Saturday the 6th of Nov. at 8 PM. I want to play all day Sunday.

Take care of yourself and don't let em get to ya, life is to short. :p
Purdman

Well said, RudeDog. These pissing contests always get in the way of more orderly and productive chat on the topics that most of us on the forum care most about.

Yes, there are one or two on the forum who seem to find joy in the initiation and escalation of rude and disrespectful communications, but we'll never be rid of them. In addition, there are those who've met each other, and don't like each other, and use the forum to publicly belittle each other. As you've said, they should stick to private messages, though the 1,000 character limit reduces the likelihood of that, as personal attacks on this forum are often wordy.

I believe more flame wars start because somebody inexplicably finds an opinion that differs from their own to be a personal attack. The most important principle involved here is that nobody should take offense because somebody disagrees with one of their posts. Everybody's entitled to an opinion, and nobody should feel small or be belittled because of their opinion. I find I learn the most from those who debate with me on the forum, and I'll add that nearly all of them do so with courtesy and respect.

One thing I love about this forum is that I'm not THE authority on any subject ever discussed, including the ones I myself raise for discussion. There's always someone out there that knows more than me on each and every thread subject, and that is part of what makes being on the forum such a positive and educational experience.

SJM,
Are you positive that someone on here knows more about Charles Dickens than you do???? I'm not so sure (of course, maybe it doesn't matter since Chucky D. probably couldn't run 3 frickin' balls).

Man, I really love that comic strip. I got a book full of some of the best ones, and the author Larson listed a few that when they first appeared in newspapers, they made no sense. There was one that I just didn't get, but he explained what his intention on the meaning was but he screwed it up totally. Pretty funny. Some of his strips even got complaints from animal rights activists, etc. ROFL, that guy Larson is the best of the best.

I would like to think that is not true. We have a forum here where 95% + of the members are all pretty cool with each other. I have had my issues with members like Drivermaker, and on occasion Blud and I have not seen eye to eye, but at the end of the day those problems either get solved or go away and I still respect them as contributing members of the board. Then you have those members that time and time again start stuff and cause every thread they become a part of to degrade into some kind of a personal attack on people. These people are the real problem, they are few and far between and we can see they are not really adding anything to this board but angst. They dont take part in the strategy posts, they dont offer their thoughts on the pool scene and ideas to fix or improve it, they dont offer advice to members of the board or their expertise when questions are posed, they simply use their posts to incite hate and belittle other members of the board. Of late I think Gremlin is the prime example of this type of member, he offers nothing but angst to this board and has ostrasized himself from a large percentage of the community with his "ignorant list" of which he would be the grand poobaa. If he wishes to not interact with the majority of the board and instead wants to illicit hate then I dont know why people like him should be welcome here at all. He is a long time member, but for all the time he has been here I cannot think of very much productive disscussion he has brought to the board, but negativity he has brought forth in leaps and bounds. Getting rid of him before he causes the truely productive members of the board such as RD to say "screw it" and leave is worth thinking about. I would take 1 Rude Dog over 1,000,000 Gremlins, hell a board is better with 0 Gremlins, 1 is 1 too many.

This is a very revealing thread about the art of posting on discussion forums and the like.

Talking from personal experience (LOL), after a while you are able to separate the "good guys" from the "bad guys." Some people enjoy ridiculing, sucker-punching, bashing, and degrading others for no reason. I have even heard one poster claim that he enjoys "playing with his toys" on the Internet; in other words, he receives satisfaction from negative posting and demeaning others. People are strange, as the saying goes!

Many veteran posters have provided helpful advice, which is to ignore the negative posts. That is a little difficult to do when a negative person posts lies about you or someone that is very close to you. If you respond with the truth, it is like feeding the flame, so to speak, and the flame war continues. If you "fight fire with fire," there is no happy outcome, only written words which mean nothing. If you ignore them, which is difficult to do at times, the flame dies down and extinguishes itself. "Flame war" is a good term!

Believe me when I say, if and when you meet these negative posters in person, you will kick yourself in the butt for even responding to them. Many times, they are just folks who like to be in the limelight, and negative posting gives them a high.

After a while, one is able to separate the good guys from the bad guys, and when you are able to accomplish this, your posting experience will be a happy one, which is what it is supposed to be all about.

And for the record, AzBilliards is tame compared to some other hellish sites in existence (IMO).

In saying that one or two get joy by initiating and escalating disrespectful communications, I meant to be taken literally. One or two, that's all.

I agree completely with what you've written, and I also recognize Drivermaker, Blud and yourself as people adding a lot of value to the forum. I hope I was not misunderstood, for I should hate myself for offending any of you, all of whom deal with me with courtesy and respect. If I have done so, please accept my apology.

Rude Dog says what he means and if someone doesn't like that, then you've got problems. I've been reading posts for quite some time and I have no problem telling anyone how I feel. There are people here in this forum that have nothing positive to say.............EVER. Sure, Gremlin has these women tournaments to talk about and plenty of pictures, but who gives a damn? He wants to get into a war with drivermaker about a 12 year old kid that IMHO shouldn't even be in this forum. I have no problem with the kid and his questions but to get in a war with someone that is offering good advice to a 12 year old is insane. Drivermaker has given plenty of input to this forum for adults that have a good reason for being here for the simple fact that they are adults. Gremlin, grow up! Butt buddies? Come on, that is way out of line! How old are you? Old enough to know better, I'm sure. I don't give a damn what anyone says about me because they don't even know me. Slam me if you want, I'll go toe to toe with anyone in here. I came to this forum to talk about pool but if someone wants to get into a flame war as some some call it, then let's do it. If I get into someone's feelings, I don't give a F***! I live for this out here in the real world and I won't hide behind my keyboard because I am who I am and if anyone doesn't like it, let me know. If you want to talk about pool, I'm in. If you want to talk trash, I'm in. Put it all out on the line in your post, I don't give a shit anymore. I may be new here but when I see the stuff I've been reading from those that have nothing nice to say, then come get some! And I don't give a fuck if I get booted for talking the way I do, that's me, take it or leave it! I say what I want and if someone doesn't like it, let me know. Rude Dog, Drivermaker, Purdy, SJM, Satman, you guys are okay with me. I'm here for the rest of you.

Billy H., with your attitude toward this whole state of affairs, you sound like my kind of guy. I hope you keep on posting regularly. Since my name has come up in this thread on various posts, and even if it didn't, how could a topic like this go by without some of my input.

Before any names were even mentioned, I'm certain there was a lot of finger pointing in my direction thinking that Rude Dog was singling me out and his post was a veiled chastisement of my specific actions. However, I know that it would never happen that way. Rude Dog and I have a tremendous mutual respect for each other and if either one of us got really torqued off at one another, we'd very simply PM behind the scenes, and we have. He and I are both very straight forward and we don't need to pull any punches intimating things through some bullshit post for all to see.

I have been in my share of range wars, but after they're over, for me they're over. Celtic mentioned a squabble that we had, yep...so big deal. I have a lot of respect for his views and he's a great contributor on a variety of subjects. (just not aiming systems) :D Sorry Celt...had to get that one in. :p

I've been playing this game almost my entire life and it's been right in the trenches. But I'm here just like everyone else and that's to learn what I can about the game from others, and there are some very knowledgable individuals here that have provided valuable insights in ALL areas, especially cues which I love to read about.

I learned how to make balls, run a lot of racks, and win money for a longgggg time now and you can't do that without having a good understanding of the game and what you're doing. But to be honest, I've never been a die hard student of the game trying to learn each and every nuance just so that I could be a walking encyclopedia to spout off to others or even improve my own game. I just wanted to play and make balls. I have always believed the statement "paralysis by analysis" is so true and I didn't want to go so far off the deep end that I was actually thinking too much while I was playing.

For some reason within the last six or seven years, I now have a keen interest in learning things just like you guys. It's not going to help me run more balls like a beginner or a struggling league player, I just want to know. Trust me when I say this, this forum on AZ has more players that really CAN play the game than any of the others. That's what I like and respect most of all. It's not a bunch of wannabe rocket scientists just theorizing about how to play the game and make balls.

As far as the flame wars go, whether it's me or anyone else, hey.. shit happens. This kind of thing occurs on every type of forum out there. That's not to say it should be expected as a regular diet, I don't like seeing it and I really don't like being a part of it, contrary to what some of you might think. But if it happens, it happens. What's really disturbing is that when someone takes all of this crap so seriously, whether it's by way of a vehement disagreement, trash talk, name calling or whatever and then gets so out of control that they start making threatening psycho PM's, that's when it and they are REALLY out of hand and it has to cease immediately. Some of you know what I'm talking about, and some of you don't, but it does go on. Now THAT is unhealthy.

Other names have been coming up recently like SJM, Williebetmore, Rodd, and a few others in a very negative fashion which is totally ridiculous. It's just beyond my comprehension that thoughtful, experienced, articulate, gentlemanly posters like that can be ridiculed or demeaned. Without them this forum would definitely not have the ooomph and pizzaz that it now has and I think EVERYONE in the know already knows that. What's surprising is the relatively low amount of group outcry regarding the attacks as compared to what's occured in the past with FL or Silencer. Although maybe this thread IS the start.

JAM said that this forum was tame compared to some of the hellish ones out there. She should know as both the taker and giver of a lot of wild and whacky words, especially when she was ganged up on by a gang of goons time and again. But you do learn. You have some hellish forums...and you have some totally dead beat forums with no excitement at all and they are
B O R I N G. I don't like hellish and I dislike boring just as much. When that happens, you can count on me to stir the pot a little, either through some very dry humor, sometimes sarcasm, other times controversial statements or viewpoints, or a dig into somebodys arse. I kinda like the taste of tabasco from time to time, but I don't take this crap seriously. I hope you don't either, but I know that's not always true. Egos and nuts seem to get busted quite easily at times. Let's just keep having fun and learning...with a little tabasco chaser from time to time. :p

But Gremlin, you've really got to cut the shit. Everybody enjoys your pictures including me, and if that's your contribution to the forum, so be it and it's welcome. The other stuff gotta go.

I hope everyone has a good day...votes...and can live happily with the outcome of the next prez at the end of the day.

I too dislike the threads that degrade into personal bickering. It tends to reveal the true nature of the character. It takes all kinds to make this world, and some of them show up here !

When I bailed out of rsb (for about the 5th time in the last dozen years) I thought this was a moderated board. I think that Mike should direct the on-line moderators to take more action against these threads. Some have been deleted, and there are many more threads or possible individual posts that could be dropped. JMO, please understand that I understand about the concept of 'freedom of speech', but think that a 'discussion' can be 'guided', especially by the sponsor. We post here thanks to AZBilliards, and they can help us keep these forums a better place.

Speaking of rsb, and I've noticed this on other Internet oriented forums, the signal-to-noise ratio tends to vary. Some of the more incendiary participants will move on, and some new knowledgeable members will join, and the tone of the discussions will change as the participants change (hey Sherm, were you on rcm when Altivoz was doing his year long rant ?). So take heart RudeDog, many here feel as you do, and that things will change, let's hope for the better.

I'd much rather be posting and reading about pool ... I think I'll start a thread on how one calculates the points in the various diamond systems ...

Seems to me, reading all the posts from people that have been on other forums that this flame-war thing is pretty common. Some of these people know each other from other boards. The flame-war thing doesn't bother me quite as much as the posters that write 15 paragraphs in a post and most of it is uninteresting drivel. Oldhasbeen wrote a couple of long posts the other day but they were great posts! Thanks again for those OHB! Some of these people, though, just go on and on and they don't say anything that makes me want to keep reading. Oh well, I'll end this before someone accuses me of doing the same thing.

D'maker,
I guess I must have missed the negative comments (I follow most, but not all threads), could you direct me to the thread. My first impression is that it would be fairly difficult to find anything negative about the posting of SJM or Rodd - these are polite guys who try to deflect controversy - what's the beef?? Negative comments about me are probably correct - I just have to find out what screen name my wife is using this time.

You already posted on it, just go back to previous pages. Here's a hint...the poster's name starts with g and ends in n. Just to let you know, if in the privacy of your own home, your wife has called out from another room and said, "your hottie GermaN girl is waiting for you" well....that's not it. Neither is GyratiN' momma, nor GushiN' granny, nor GoldiggiN' Anna, nor GamiN Gerda, nor GrouchiN' wife. So it must be a new one........
