Eric Durbin vs James Welden

walden

i saw t. stephenson and walden play at shooters in olathe a few years back. i know stephenson came out on top, but don't know the bet. they played 3 sets of 9 ball and 3 sets of one pocket. stephenson came out way ahead on both. walden is well known on the midwest 9 ball tour, i know he places high in almost every event he enters. Very strong player, I saw him play on an accustats tape as well.

I remember when he spent a few weeks in the Southeast Texas area. He seemed like a class act. I fired my little biscuit at him, and he gobbled it up real quick. Real easy to get along with.

He matched up with Tommy Sanders, who was a great player a couple of decades ago, and who the locals still like to get behind. Tommy quit playing and owns a car dealership. After James had beat Tommy out of $20 or 30K, James gave it , or some of it, right back by buying a car with the cash.

JW could probably be found if someone is looking for a game.

It's James Walden he is from OK and bets high I have lost my fair share of money to him, but in my prime i've beat him out of money as well. He will play anybody for any amount of money. I saw him post 50 grand once...

Maybe he should take a trip to the Phillippines and see about matching up there. It seems many pro players go there to gamble and have no issues finding action. Alex supposedly lost pretty large cash there right before winning the worlds so I dont think these guys would avoid playing this guy. Japan too, see if any of those ultra rich people in Japan want to back up one of their pro's, maybe even Yang. If this guy is really as solid for the cash as is said here and willing to play for 50 or 100k sets then whats a roadtrip to a different country to stir up action. Seems like a guy that it would be great to take on the road, and the road in todays world is not driving to a different state, it is now a global market.

That should be the next movie, or even a book. About a top road player that owns the gambling scene in America and takes to the world traveling all over the place to different countries, matching up, and getting into situations all over the place. Heck, it does not even have to start in America, it could start anywhere and America could be one of the stops, whichever country decided to take up the movie basis.

Why stay in the US? Easy- better people, better food, better beer.

Ya-All must be thinking of "Junior Weldon"

I can only assume you all are talking about "Junior" Weldon.
He is also an OldHasBeen from the 70's & 80's & I am glad to hear he is doing well. Great Player & Gentleman.
Orig. form Okla but has been from Maine to Spain & Austin to Boston.
Used to have a nice room in Phoenix - The Golden 8 Ball, I think.
He has always been a real "Gun-Fighter" and won't back away from any big challenge. When you play him - You better "Bring Your Lunch" & "Play Your Best"
Louie had many a match w/ Junior. Some of the best 9-Ball I've seen.
I got lucky on him in Pontiac, MI about 30 years ago (playing one-pocket) but I didn't know him then. I still think I may have just run off with "The Lemon-Aid"
Last saw him here in St. Louis when I got a call @ 3am to go see who was "Taking Off" One of MY best Suckers. Him & Cadillac Jack were here to get this sucker who I had playing Vernon Elliott during the day wearing a local gas co. uniform. I HAVE NEVER BEEN A KNOCKER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE, but I couldn't let Jack & Junior take off this sucker. I explained my situation to Junior in the bathroom and he UNDERSTOOD COMPLETELY.
WHAT A NICE GUY!
We went back out & told the Sucker who he was playing and, as most suckers, he still wanted to play and insisted that I match up a "Fair Game". I matched them up at 11 to 5 & 11 to 6. THEY HAD BEEN PLAYING $500 A GAME EVEN.
As luck would have it - Cadillac Jack & I started to play Gin for $200 a game while Junior & John played. Lets just say that Cadillac Jack played a lot better Pool than he did Gin.
When "school let out" - Junior won $1,000 & I won $2,500. Jack was "IN" with Junior & I (as usual) was "On My Own".
If anyone knows where Junior is - Tell him there is "His Kind Of Action" right here in St. Louis - NOW !!!
Look into my profile, Go to my website & get with me.
TY & GL

Old has been, I think you are talking about Welden [Junior}Rogers. I played him in tournaments but never gambled with him. I know several people who tried him with Junior always coming out on top. Last time i saw him in Ft. Wayne, he didn't seem to be playing too well. Sam

A funny moment in pool

anymore Walden stories, did Parica ever try him?

One time at the Thanksgiving tournament at Shooters in Wichita KS...very tough field, David Matlock, Danny Medina, Dave Gomez, Gabe Owen, Cliff Joyner, Junior Brown, Coy Lee, Jesse Bowman and James Walden...(and Me :D).

James and Danny drew each other first round (or second, it was really early) and Danny was reporting his victory at the score table. A young player from Wichita overheard Danny say he won and the kid was shocked "You won?!? Do you know who that IS???"...Obviously the youngster didn't know who Danny was! The look on Danny's face was priceless as he said..."yeah, I know him."

I believe Gabe Owen ended up winning the tournament.

Cheers,

walden vs. martinez

I saw Rafael Martinez beat James Walden at the Cue Club in Las Vegas back in 2000 for about $7-10,000 playing even. They played for 27 hours starting at $300/game and ending at $1000/game. They walked back into the Riviera together and had some drinks. Walden about fell asleep on the bar and Martinez was fresh and told my wife and I that he was not tired and was going back to the Cue Club to look for more action. We saw him the next night with his backer and still had the same clothes on with his pool case over his shoulder. That is the first time I had ever seen Martinez ( he lived in Germany for a few years), but was told he was a ferocious gambler.

Just Play Tony will not play him even, he would absolutly kill McCready, not sure if anyone will back Cliff for that kind of money. He plays big money matches with the likes of Jack Cooney for $50 and $100k.

Where were you, NorthCarolinian, when I played James Walden over there in Olathe, Kansas, spotting him the 8 and 9 and beat him out of 16 large? The one 10-ahead set took about an hour an a half. Nice call, NorthCarolinian. Every once in a while, a dog will have its day! After that, he tried to give me the break playing one-pocket, and he come up short there, too. I wouldn't jump over hurdles to play him now, but that's what happened then.

Keith, Is there any living human over the age of 30 or so, that you haven't beaten at some time. I wouldn't think there are but a handful. There are some people that just don't realize how well you played a few years ago. Keep knockin em in. Sam

I've been told by a former top road player that there's no way Walden can spot the top players (and he included Keith in that category). Definitely a level below the top pro's (but that's a pretty high level). Of course we may not even be talking about the same guy.

Who wins this matchup of top notch gamblers in a 10 ahead nine ball set for $20K?

BTW where does Durbin call home?
hmm he must of come in as i was going out. in 95, dont remember him playing any and all commers. or he could have played me:) i would have played him in 93 and before so he must have gotten very good after i left the seen. i would have usually played most anyone wheather in stroke or not. but i hear he is a great player though. but though it was only 9 ball

Any chance of your making it back into this game of ours Mark? Maybe playing in a tourney or two a year even? Hate to see some our best players quit the game, but if/when they make a comeback on the scene it almost makes it better, our real life version of the hustler/COM storyline. You cannot be that old today, what, about 35 give or take?

I can't comment on Walden but Durbin resides from Middletown, OH. It is just north of Cincinnati and just south of Dayton. Durbin has been up and down the coaster like many players. You never know when he will catch a gear. When he does he can play with anyone and longer then most. The last time I talked to him was at a tournament at airway billiards in Dayton...He said he quit playing and hes hanging Tyvek??? That didnt last long, well atleast the not playing pool part. I havent seen him in a while but hell be making an appearance soon I'm sure. He runs around with Mike Brown who is a pretty strong money player himself. They go on the road quite a bit and with the DCC approaching Durbin will be sure to be in stroke.

Durbin

Durbin is definately back to playing pool. And last i heard james walden was hanging out in missouri with dave matlock and tony fargo.
