ESPN Billiards

Is there any pool on ESPN anymore? And if not, is there any planned in the near future?

DCP

I hope not. Races to 5 9ball with a 1 rack sudden death is hardly pool... plus the commentating is miserable.

There is a ton of great pool available on DVD, VOD, Youtube and live stream. ESPN is the last place I would want to see it anymore.

ESPN would be better off just paying TAR to resume their broadcasts, turn the podcast into a weekly show and show it on ESPN 8...the Ocho!

The women's International Tournament of Champions and the men's Challenge of Champions were both played in California in early October, 2014. ESPN broadcast the women's event in December (Kelly Fisher won) and the men's event 9 days ago (Thorsten Hohmann won).

They just had three days of the consecutive hours of pool on espn.
Women's tournament of champions, men's tournament of champions, and trick shot champion.

Won by kelly fisher, Thorsten Hohmann, and andy S.

The only decent pool on ESPN is when they simply run the Matchroom productions of the World Cup or Mosconi Cup. Problem is they aren't live but delayed...usually by several months.

The World Cup and Mosconi Cup were run on the ESPN's internet channel ESPN3 live and they were great. But again, these are Matchroom productions. This is probably the best we can expect from ESPN if we want to see the whole event live and unedited. Given the small audience they just suck up too much air time to throw on television without editing.

I DVR'ed these matches and made it thru 1.5 episodes before the announcers got too annoying and I shut it off. I might finish at some point but if I'm going to spend my limited free time watching a match, it sure won't be 9ball with ESPN announcers. LOTS and LOTS of good stuff on youtube. Personally, I enjoy the barbox 8ball & 1 pocket the most.

Touché
There is more online content and sources on the web to pick and choose from these days
Probably the only remnant of ESPN pool still going strong is "ESPN World Champion" on Azb
:D

Yeah I hope not...I mean why would we want pool to get any national exposure on the biggest sports channel on the planet. jesus you guys amaze me by your never ending ability to complain about everything anyone does involving pool. No wander our game is dead.

ESPN can generate millions of new pool players yearly.

What's wrong with you, don't you know it's better to web stream pool to 600 rather than millions on ESPN? ;)

ESPN was last year’s top dog in cable ratings, sweeping the key demo categories while also winning in total viewers — leap-frogging the likes of USA and Disney Channel, which traditionally battle for the top spot but slumped in 2014.

The sports network, whose telecast of the college football championship game last January was the year’s most-watched cable telecast (25.75 million viewers), edged ahead of TBS in adults 18-49 and 25-54 and bested Adult Swim in the 18-34 demo, according to Nielsen estimates. ESPN was one of seven top-40 networks to deliver year-over-year primetime gains in adults 18-49.

If anything, its the formats ESPN showcases that turns off ppl who actually play Pool. The double edge sword is that mainstream viewers would be bored to death watching Shane run a 7pack because there is no drama. He makes the game look too easy, and easy translates into boring.

Streams are fantastic for hardcore fans. Back when there were no streams I was always frustrated that the only pool I got to see was short race 9 ball. But the flip side of that is 9 ball on ESPN was a gateway drug for me in regards to pool. It was probably was for a lot of people who took up the game in the mid 90s. It seemed like ESPN's Ultimate 9 Ball Challenge was on all the time back then with CJ and a host of others. Now would I prefer to watch something like the CSI Invitationals over an ESPN production? Absolutely, but it's too bad pool is out of the public eye to attract new viewers/players like it was 20 years ago.

The problem with the ESPN broadcast is that their production and editing drives away the regular pool player and does not attract the non playing public.

Does anyone really want to look at a ball rolling into the pocket via of the pocket cam or just watching the player make balls and cutting out the safties. Then the constant promoting and showing the jump shot that doesn't have the skill of having the CB go three rails to get out of a apparent lock up safe.

They dont want to ruin their ratings by showing pool which no one watches except us cultists!

Overall it is just sad though-how this country worships sports.

Personally I think the womens tour that used to always be on espn 7 or 8 years ago was some the best pool ever put on tv. it was entertaining and yes while they were not the best hardcore players out there their skill levels seemed somewhat "attainable" to many people. Honestly it was just a joy to watch Allison, Kelly, and Karen dominate the whole thing every time :)

I really haven't been much of a tv watcher at all in the last 20 years, but whenever Allison and Karen were in a final it was one of the rare "must watch" programs on tv for me.

I'm not complaining about anything. The guy that started the thread did. I'm just stating the obvious. ESPN pool is a joke.

I'm perfectly happy with where pool is right now. You don't see any posts from me trying to save this sport.

Once the game is showcasing it's strengths, rather than it's weaknesses

That's why I felt the need to develop a new game. So different than what we're doing now because it's specially designed to bring out the best qualities of many pocket billiard games.

Pool is a great TV game, however, it has to be tailored, just like custom clothing - there are 8 weaknesses in the current game, the key was figuring out how to turn them into strengths.

Once the game is showcasing it's strengths, rather than it's weaknesses ESPN will be more than happy to take broadcast the show......same time, same day, on a weekly basis. This way we can start to accumulate a bright, affluent audience.
