From a Matchroom press release:

Player entries for the inaugural European Open Pool Championship at Hotel Esperanto, Fulda, Germany sold out in less than an hour with 256 spots snapped up ahead of the $200,000 prize fund tournament getting underway from August 9-14.

We have the quick and the left behind. I imagine Matchroom reserved spots for sluggish stars.

Matchroom has developed a superior professional pool product, and demand is, not unexpectedly, through the roof.

The top 32 in the Matchroom 9-ball rankings get in automatically, so there's no need to fear that any of the elite will be left out. And, of course, there are wild cards, too.

Having this event in Fulda is fitting tribute Thorsten Hohmann, one of few players that has ever won a sanctioned world championship in both nine ball and straight pool. Ortmann, Sigel, Varner, and Feijen are the only others I can think of that have accomplished this.

The European Open should be a dandy.

I would hope Matchroom would do a pre sales offering to players on the world 9-ball ranking. That would seem fair to me.

the field was full booked inbetween 25 minutes- already bigger waiting list existing.

Well- seriously. I may understand what you meant- but if you are a professional, you have also have to do your job in direction to book your events as soon as possible. And first comes, first get it is imo very fair. If a pro would *fail* to book early enough....- then he failed to take care of his job. just imho.

If Matchroom wants a strong field worthy of broadcasting then they also should do their jobs and not leave it to chance that their stable of TV-friendly pool players will hop on a computer and buy their tickets in the first hour of sales opening. Hell, some of them need to be woken up to show up to a TV table match. I wouldn’t leave much to chance. I think holding back slots for invites is effective but just lands oddly for me compared to giving ranked players first dibs.

Ok- now i get your point mate-- think i ve read too fast :-)
to hold "some" kind of wildcards back is not a bad idea. Agree here.

but i still think, they (the pros) have still to do their job and take care of planning.

Wow, I was stationed just outside Fulda when in the service, 69-70. Was up on a radar outpost in Wasserkuppe. Was a fantastic place, ski resort just outside our gate, I actually used to ski down to my apartment, and ride the ski lift back to work in the winter. In the summer it was a famous glider school. Would love to go back there sometime.

If this took weeks to fill I would say when you snooze you lose. However, anyone can miss a less than one hour window.

I think that holding a place for the top thirty-two is fair, until two weeks before an event. Throw the spots open to whoever has the fastest trigger finger after that!

So top 32 are in, how many more entries are possible?
With 156 spots mentioned that would leave 124 spots open. Give a few to the venue so a few local heroes can help live revenue, leaves 110-120 spots up for grabs. I don't mind allocating some spots to generate interest. As long as a hundred spots are open out of 156 I feel like it is an open competition or close enough to provide some underdog drama.

I must have missed that part of the announcement. In the press release I saw, they said 256 places were taken and I'm pretty sure there are only 256 places.

I live about an hour and a half away in Mainz, so I'll definitely be there to watch the last few days!
