Evgeny

I was just watching Stalev and Kiamco on BCN and noticed that Evgeny plays with a cue that has some kind of spliced shaft. Looks like a butterfly splice, but I couldn't tell.

Anyone know what kind of cue the Russian uses?

I bet it's Russian made. Russian and also Finnish made cues for Russian Pyramid and Finnish game called Kaisa have frequently butterfly spliced cues, sometimes all the way up to the ferrule.

This cue made to play pool by russian standards. I mean standards of russian pyramid billiards, where most of the pro play with spliced like butterfly cues. This, I think, make them act like "spring". Besides, U don't need ideal single peace of wood... In the end, that's tradition.

Evgeny's cue made by Alexander Efremov, one of respected russian cuemakers.

i saw mark tadd play with a cue with butterfly shafts back in the mid 90's. in one of his accustat videos, he's playing with that cue. it makes for a stiffer hit. you can ask tadd what it gave him.

That was a question we were asking watching one of his gambling sessions, at the open, and I believe that the shaft is not spliced, that is a snooker cue (or looks to be) that has been stained in those patterns.

Sounds like PeachGabba has the line on this, from where we were sitting it was certainly tough to tell. either way the cue is certainly unique.

U'd better say it's very unusual. I know one amateur player here in Moscow that have one cue for russian billiards and for pool as well. He's changing only small butts for better weight. It's very similar approach: this cue is made with "butterflu splice" tech, but by another cuemaker. It hits _very_ good, nice work and perfect wood.

So in theory U can order very similar cue to Stalev's. ;) I think for him it was a little experiment, that worked. Besides, he played pyramid a lot lately, so maybe it was easier to change game...

Anyone knows, is he still playing in USA?

The first night of the Open, I was thrilled to see Evgeny Stalev, and so was Keith. We sat with him for a spell and exchanged a few pleasantries AND caught up on pool smut.

When I asked Evgeny about what cue stick he was playing with, he pulled out this striped piece of wood. He told me it weighed in at 28, which I found unbelievable. I picked up the cue myself, and though it was a heavy cue, I thought it was not 28 ounces. However, it was most definitely over 21 ounces. Keith plays with a 21-ounce cue, and The Russian's was heavier than Keith's cue.

Evgeny told me that he did suffer a little from the time difference between Russia and the United States at this year's Open. He said next year, he will arrive one week earlier to get his body acclimated for competition. I think he told me he was heading back home to Russia after the Open, but he will be back for the Derby City Classic. He is 26 years old now, and though he has won a Russian Billiards championship title four times in a row when he was 18 and 19 years of age, I think his 9-ball game is GREAT. His best game is that Russian Billiards, which I don't understand one iota, but he is learning to play all games and has excelled in 9-ball. He banks balls better than most, too!

I knew him quite well at the time and Mark Tad's cue was actually an "Excalibur" fiberglass cue. He sanded the front end of it because it was too sticky to play with. The cue was also warped. Funny thing, it was eventually stolen. It retailed for under $100.

Does anyone know of any cuemakers here that have done a cue just like this one? Or better yet, does anyone actually have this exact design or something extremely similar? By something similar, I mean the butterfly splice high up in the shaft. I think one day I would like to get something like this; it really is very unique and beautiful.

Yes, I am aware that Sterling makes a cheap-o version of this stick. I think that's what the eBay link was for. But I would want something a little nicer than that, if possible. I also saw a custom cue with splices in the shaft, but they were only within the first few inches of the bottom of the shaft, and it was too colorful for my taste (red, orange, etc.).

I did also search for Efremov Cues; the guy has a site, but of course, it's all in Russian. :D

(Quote)There are several Bear users on the IPT roster and they are:
Francisco Bustamante
Raj Hundal
Daryl Peach
Andreja Klasovic
and possibly Evgeny Stalev (he certainly used one before but he may have switched manufacturers now) and Tom Storm (also used them in the past but not sure if he still does).
Imran Majid and Vilmos Foldes are 2 of the the players who didn't make the IPT this time but got very close and who also use my favourite cue brand Most of these players use Predator shafts.
Here in the UK Bear cues have always been used by a lot of our top pros. Please let me know if there are any other endorsees I've missed out!

Hope this helps

Last time I saw Evgeny in Riverside I asked him what cue was he using since it looked real odd. He looked at me and said "Its a It Sucks Cue" with a smile and walked away.

Thanks for quoting me! :)
That cue is definitely not a Bear. I saw him using that at the US Open and thought it looked very unusual. Thanks for revealing the details Peachgabba! I didn't know whether he'd switched to it (the Efremov) permanently or whether he would eventually return to his Bear. That's why I only said he was possibly still using them in the IPT thread. If anyone wants to see loads of videos of Evgeny (some with his Bear and others with the Efremov) then follow this link

http://www.propool.info/_misc/pool-video.php

I found this posted on this forum some time back so thanks to whoever put it up originally. Loads of other great matches too. Straight pool, banks, snooker and loads of 8 and 9 ball matches- many top-name pros too. Although the links are in Russian if you scroll over them the video URLs are all in English so you can see whos playing in each match.

Hope this all helps,
Chris (chrstc).

I get a page full of messed up text, I used to be able to watch the matches.

Hi,
Just tried it again myself and it works fine for me still- maybe you just need to try back later. The only problem is that the McCready-Parica matches don't work and nor do a couple of the Russian Pyramid matches. I forgot to mention that there are also tonnes of trick shots on the page plus Reyes-Marquez One Pocket and loads of other goodies. I think a thread with the URL in should be made sticky so that everyone can see these clips.
