Eye Dominance

I see the mention of left and right eye dominant in a lot of threads and was wondering what it is and how do I figure out if I am right eye or left eye dominant.

Also, how do I take advantage of knowing which eye is dominant? Thank you very much.

For people (like me) who have better vision in one eye are usually dominant in that eye. In my case I am left eye dominant but right handed. This induces a parallax error when aiming for some shots. You just have to get used to it. Having your dominant eye and hand on the same side, makes things easier.

here is the easiest way:

To Find Your Dominant Eye

This experiment is called the Dolman method of determining ocular dominance. It is quick and easy.

Take any piece of paper or cardboard and, somewhere in its center, cut out a square or circle. Make it about one inch wide. It does not have to be a precise shape.
Hold the paper with both hands at arm’s length in front of you.
Look through the hole at any object nearby that is not moving – let’s say it is a desk chair.
As you continue focusing on that chair, gradually draw the paper closer to you until it is touching your face.

You will find that the hole is in front of one of your eyes – your dominant eye. That eye has been the one focusing on the chair all along, while the other eye looked at it a little from the side.

Someone will be along soon get your eyes in the perfect position for only the low price of $200. ;). Johnnyt

Hm that sounds interesting, definitely going to try that today. Thank you!

I'm left handed and hold the butt of my cue with my left hand and bridge with my right hand. So you're saying since I bridge with my right hand, it would be easier if I were to be right eye dominant?

Not that I don't trust people, but I had to do a search for myself. Here is another quick and easy way to find your dominant eye. I didn't want anyone to walk in with a piece of paper held up over my face! lol

I found out that I am right eye dominant. I am also right handed so that makes it easier for me to have my right eye over the shaft when shooting.

lol stir that pot Johnny....now stir it slowly...yesssss lol....

I think people should be less concerned about eye dominance and be more concerned about not darting their eyes back and forth a bunch of times between the object ball and the cue ball. I see a lot of players due this and the good ol brain just doesn't have time to catch up!

my 2 cents
if you are pocketing balls well
dont worry about it...:D

It only takes a second. I cant tell you how surprised I was to to find myself looking through the hole with my right eye. I never felt confident using other methods, but this ended any questions I had.

I'm right handed and left eye dominant and almost 20/20 vision with my glasses. Shot lots of rifle right handed with right eye when I was young. I believe one has to absolutely pay attention to eye dominance. Switching aiming between eyes can be a real problem for some. Since I discovered this several years ago, I have seen good and even pro players switch eye alignment when going down on shots. I remember/called SVB missing a easy 9 ball on a stream because of switching.
Stan Shuffet in his last video, finally mentioned the importance of knowing ones eye's dominance and the problem with switching. Geno is in the know too as I discussed this with him years ago. when I found out that was what I was doing. Geno has a great understanding of it and how to deal with it.
So if you can't understand how you missed the shot by a half diamond. It might have been caused by switching your dominant eye.

Gene still offers phone lessons for free to get you off on the right path... Lessons come later if you happen to feel like one would help your progress... In the formal lesson the perfect aim portion on eye dominance and learning to stay in a dominant position is only about 30 minutes of the lesson if you are already familiar from the phone lesson or a mini lesson...

Gene had me try something over the phone that hooked me into listening to the rest of what he had to say... Instead of 30 minutes we spent over an hour on the phone and it opened me up to looking at things differently than I had in over 20 years of playing....

Look for the on te road again with perfect aim thread and post there if Gene doesn't find you first....

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the system that the guy in your
avatar is using.

blind

Corrective surgery in my left eye a year in a half ago , I was 100 % blind in that eye.

Now I am going blind in my right eye.

My game is about the same no matter what eye I am using.

But my game is at its best when I have 2 eyes.

I looked up some of the literature on ocular dominance awhile ago. Here is what I found.

See also the posts after the one linked to above.

While little known or discussed, ocular dominance can and does shift over distance to the object. This happens over two to eight feet. It is worth a read. My conclusion is to pick a place for your chin and stick with it.

Your eyes and brain have learned over a life time to compensate for ocular dominance shift from the mid-line of your body (under your nose) and it would be "best" to start from this position and let your brain make adjustments. I know there are many who disagree but they simply have not read (or understood) the physiological literature.

It is a complicated topic and requires much thought.

It is best to read the scientific literature for yourself and draw your own conclusions.
