Fargo Rankings, Ever heard of it

Just heard of this today. Are other AZ'ers familiar with it and I just somehow missed it? THx http://www.fargobilliards.com/pool-tournaments/fargo-ratings/

For the new folks, here's the history:

On the usenet forums, we did online tournaments as well as get togethers. One excitable member discovered (the first he'd heard of it) the Allen Hopkins Q-Skills Challenge (look it up). Q-Skills was a combination of mostly offensive straight pool with a finish five balls in rotation.

Long-time poster Mike Page suggested a change to the game where you would choose when to start the rotation phase making the game a little tougher at your decision, but with a great scoring reward. The player would flip a coin over to signal the start of his rotation phase like so many Brazilian Steakhouses.

Long-time poster Pat Johnson suggested to call it Flip And Run, Guts Offense or FARGO for short to credit Mike Page (who is from Fargo).

Today, Mike is a billiard instructor and the proprietor of Fargo Billiards. Pat Johnson is ... banned from AZ?

Actually the link the OP provided was about the Fargo 8 ball handicapping system rather than the game Freddie is referring to. I've heard of the system before on one of Dr Dave's pages. I can't speak to its efficacy.

It is awesome.

As a frequent player at Fargo Billiards, I have 3387 games in the system, the 5th most. I can say the system is by far the best rating system I have played under. It is easy to handicap tourneys, money matches, etc.. Mike has even used the system to rate us for Straight Pool.

They system has known players, such as, SVB, Eric Durbin, Justin Bergman, Jesse Engel, just to name a few. In Fact, Jesse and Mike Fiedlhammer started a league in the Minneapolis area this year using Fargo Ratings.

If you have questions, ask Mike Page, as he frequently reads the board.

After last weekend at a tournament where players ranked themselves and really screwed the team handicap, I am convinced the Fargo Ranking System is by far the best I have seen. It takes into account your history as a player and adjusts accordingly to how you are playing over time. I don't think you can cheat this system like the players that came from out of state to Wisconsin and screwed everybody who was honest with their ranking. I'm not normally one to call people out, but you know who you are and if you feel like you accomplished something by ranking yourself a B when you are a Master, I am embarrassed for you. Anyone else have any Fargo Ranking Feedback or want more details?

The Fargo system is being used in WI, just not everywhere yet. If you go to mypoolstats.com you can see ranking and a lot more information.

OK. Makes me wish I still lived in WI. I'm not far away and am trying to get out and shoot more so I should make it to some tournaments hopefully.

That's the game Fargo, different from the Fargo ratings, which are both different from Fargo the movie, which takes place in Fargo the city.

I am really surprised that more people are not requesting this ranking system to be used for their local tournaments.

Fred- this is pretty much the same system we used for the All About Pool Tour Divisional (Open-A-B-C-d) tournaments. It would also account for differences within the divisions. A C4 (strongest C--almost a B) would give a C1 a game in a race to 7. It was the same numerical based which we converted to the different divisions. There was no guess work. You won, you went up. You lost you would go down a little.

Any more opinions on the Fargo Ranking System as used for tournament handicapping? I think a lot of people are missing the boat here.

Interesting

Based on the lack of feedback I am beginning to think that the mass of pool players on AZ have no desire to match up fairly. If that's the case, cool, but at tournaments all I hear is how players are not ranked correctly. This system corrects that, what am I missing here? Why not more interest?
