Fast Eddie Shot an Illegal Shot!

I don't know how many others caught this or not.... be honest whether ya did or not ;) :

In the movie Color of Money with Newman and Cruise, there was a scene where Fast Eddie(Newman) was playing "Amos" (Forest Whitaker) 9 ball and was getting "hustled" by Whitaker. Anyhoot... while Amos was shooting he was talking about the science experiments and doing electroshock for the experience once.. he missed his shot. Then as the camera pans up on the table when Eddie has his shot he kicks in the 6-9 combo cross side. You can see the 7 and 8 off to the right but what you can also see is the 3 ball about 16" away from the shot on the left. :eek:
Anyone else ever notice that? :scratchhead:
Also I wonder why the director put it in there and if there was any meaning to it or reference?
 
I have yet to see ANY movie about pool that didn't have something hokey in its contents. Well, maybe "The Hustler" was probably the closest to realistic as any of 'em.

Vince makes the four ball and has a 30 degree angle on the five. Eddie walks in the room. Pan back over to Vince and he now has a straight in! He must have been awarded ball in hand somehow. Maybe he called a foul on Mosel for sharking.

All I know was that in one of the matches Newman shoots a cross corner combo. It was actually a fluke, but they used it anyway.

'The Hustler' was great, and the most realistic. Newman does make a shot that is a foul in the movie. There is a neat 'push through' shot when Eddie calls a ball, I think it was the 1 ball, and pushes through a carom of two balls to hit the called ball with his tip and make it 'in the side'. Look for the spot where Fats cocks his head and says 'very nice shot'.
 
I can't remember which but Paul Or Tom's hand makes contact with a ball that is rolling in one of the clips.
 
Catching these things is the responsibility of the "Continuity Director" or "Script Supervisor" on the film set. Usually they're making sure the same props are in the same place. The level of the drinks in a glass stay the same, an actors tie is opened the same amount etc.

What happens on film shoots like this is that there are dozens of takes and literally every shot is being filmed. After the gates are checked and the director and DP (director of photograhy) check off on the dailies they get sent off to the studio and it sits in the hand of the editor of the film.

More often than not the editor is not present during the day to day filming of the movie and is charged with making a fluid story. Surprsingly on many movie projects the director will allow the editor to cut the film as he/she sees fit for commercial distribution. Hence, most DVD/BluRay releases having "The Director's Cut" version that we all see in the video stores.

Not for nothing it's still a great thing when we catch the editing "mistakes" that 95% of the public will never, ever see or understand.

The first time I caught a pool related mistake was watching "Bad Boy"...it waa originally released in 1935. It was even more accurate than "The Hustler" save for one short scene where Eddie Nolan shoots a masse shot and, what appears to be, the two ball rolls out of the shot and ends up coming back in from the head rail at about 5 times the speed it should have had.

Two things..."Bad Boy" is an awesome flick number one...and number two, even after 75 years or so Hollywood still can't get it right.
