I'm working on a tool that will allow people to quickly diagram shots similar to the ones you're familiar with from instructional books. I'd really appreciate some feedback as I'm working on it.

Shot Generator

I intend on using the product myself to build up a collection of shots bundled together as a free iPhone/iPad app.

The idea comes from tools called "pastebins" which allow programmers to quickly exchange segments of code with each other.

I'm less than a week into development (couple hours a night), but should be able to add bezier curves to simulate masse and English shot trajectories by the end of the weekend.

Other features on the roadmap:

- Save to database to facilitate friendlier links.
- Use directional keys to position balls a pixel at a time
- Generate PNG, SVG and PDF files on demand.
- Categorize your type of shot
- Flag your shot as open to the public viewing
- Que angle indicator
- Notes

Hum... not quite sure why. Having a look at my firewall settings. Thanks.

Man there's a lot of rec.sport.billiards folks here. Taking me way back!

Yea that's not bad. Thanks for the link!

I would say that once mine is done it will be differentiated in that it won't have a watermark logo on the felt of the table, will support curves, cueing position and butt angle. I particularly have in mind carom and trick shot diagrams.

Thanks again

LOL @ pointing out the logo. Someone has to pay for the server and access, and I can't blame Wei for advertising (and selling advertising).

If you'd looked just a bit further, you'd see that you can add cue elevation and CB contact point in CueTable. Perhaps instead of your two hours of coding this evening, you could explore all of the features he already has. At least it would provide you with ideas.

(hint: click the little wrench icon at the bottom to bring up the tools)

Wei's cuetable is the bomb and it's getting better all the time.. Like Steev said, someone has to pay the bills, a sponsors logo does not bother me one bit..

Also, the proportion of the table seems to be off by quite a bit, it looks too long to be correct IMHO.. Looks more like L=Wx2.5 or Wx3 rather than L=Wx2

Good luck with your program, if it does something the the cuetable does not, I'd be highly impressed.. Peace!

I tried to download the program but it wouldn't set up and install.

Setup Ideas

What's the possiblity of having some sort of adjustment when setting up a shot, to apply english by a parralell shift, or Back Hand English, Front hand english... where user could see the initial setup aim line and then the adjusted line after the desired amount of english is applied based on which ever technique is used.

I would love to add an aim line vs cue ball path capability. I'm a pretty heavy user of english myself. The adjustment for deflection, swerve and throw are all extremely important. Of course that brings in the importance of shot speed which I haven't considered. Probably need to add a scale for that.

I appreciate you all turning me on to the cuetable.com designer. I honestly wasn't even able to get it running last night because of issues installing the Shockwave plugin. I did watch their short video. I'll try it out again tonight!

I'm really not looking to supplant whatever is out there and working for people now. This tool will be used by me personally as a way of generating vector graphics for my iphone/ipad application. I make a living during the day off of Open Source software and have a natural reaction to open up my own work :)

Eh... Dot.com Bust -> Married -> Kids ... Lost the time and the interest for a decade. I do miss those epic Bob Jewett v Ron Shepard ($.02) threads.

Can't stand reading my own old posts now, just a kid back then :) I did at one time hold the record for starting the longest thread (Frustrated 9-Ball Players)

Cheers!

i like it...might wanna consider writing a script to shorten the URL...very very long right now

Thanks! I did some work to shorten it a bit. There's certainly a lot more I can do. Of course if it's saved to the server I can give out very short URLs. Plenty to do...

codeoncoffee...It seems to me that you're merely trying to reinvent the wheel. Wei Chao has put hundreds of hours of work into his site, and it has all the bells and whistles already, including showing curved lines and trick shots. That said...good luck with you project.

I appreciate that. I got Shockwave installed and it is quite impressive. However, I've yet to find a way to export tables in a vector-based format which is why I've written this.

I appreciate the feedback everyone!
