ferrule Question

The shaft that I have has a capped ferrule. My repair man is changing it to uncapped. Will that change the hit or will I not notice it?

It's a Lucasi shaft and it had either Ivorine 3 or XTC and now it will have melamine with a Emerald tip.

I would think if I went from a capped XTC to uncapped Melamine I would notice a difference. XTC & I3 a fairly lightweight and on the softer side whereas Melamine is pretty hard.

I may be confused, but I seem to remember that there was a type of sleeve on them.
I've never done a replacement, Lucasi is not very popular where I'm at.
I'm sure Kj or Ryan would know best.
I guess you'll see tomorrow :)

I think the speed you play at will dictate if and how much you feel.

If its the same ferrule material I doubt you will notice. Not like going from an Elk Master to a phenolic tip type differance.

I had the ferrule changed on my McFadden to the Melamine and did not notice a difference.I am not real sensitive to small changes. So probably nothing to worry about. I was just wondering.

Doug is using my melamine and my Emerald tip (which I gave him today).
I can assure you from past experience that your Lucasi will play better.
In fact, it may even play like a real pool cue when he's done...

That cue put a 3 pack on you once.

the regular lucasi shafts are capped and threaded on a standard 5/16x18 tenon. the hybrids are a bit different. they use a thru ferrule on a 5/16 tenon, pretty standard for the ferrule itself. the main difference is the tenon, it's actually made of two pieces. there is a thinner maple tenon, then a lightweight wood sleeved over it to reduce deflection (i think its basswood or something like that). both are XTC ferrules, though some older lucasi shafts used ivorene-3 originally.

Personally I've never cared for Lucasi. I've owned 2, one 10+ years ago. I got one, didn't like it and handed it down to my wife who didn't like it either, nobody I played with like it so I sold it on Ebay. Bought another at an auction 2 - 3 years ago, didn't like that one either, my wife didn't and I sold it on Craigslist. Both were nice looking just didn't care for the way they shot.

The Lucasi's I owned had a soft hit from what I remember so switching it to Melamine ferrule would most likely give it a harder hit, more deflection. Hard to say if you'll notice or not I guess it depends on how you play. Hopefully you'll like it and if not you can always have him put a different ferrule on. If your cue guy recc. it, go for it!

Melamine sure is hard and makes a very distinct sound .

Very true. XTC gives a soft sound whereas Melamine is much louder. I have an Aegis II on my PH break shaft and its very loud.... puts fear of God into my opponents. Well OK, nobody fears my break but you know what I mean.

He may not notice a change in the playability (which is all that really matters) but he should notice a difference in sound. Some people find it annoying, other like it. Sometimes I like that "donk" sounds my Joss makes when I hit the cueball. I usually use a 314 but switch it up sometimes.

Bruce just go back to your old Palmer withe the screw on tips! Or be like Garbage Truck Red (RIP) and use a Lucky Cue HOUSEBUSHKA. Then it's back to the office with Billy G(RIP).
