Fiberglass or maple debate .... help!!

I've been using the same cuetec fiberglass cue for about 10 years. The other day I used a friends Players cue which was maple and it felt pretty good, so now I cant figure out which is better. I've noticed most of the people at my local place use maple, very rarely do I see anyone using fiberglass. So any opinions as to which is better? Thanks in advance for any help or advice!!

I'm not sure how to really answer this without sounding mean so I'll just say this: maple.

The only positive thing I can think of for the fiberglass shaft is you can leave it in your car and it won't warp. They get sticky and never have the same new smoothness they start with. Also, if you ever want to get a low deflection shaft they will not be coated with fiberglass.

Do you think that it would change your playing ability for the better than change.

If you are happy with what you have why worry about what others feel is the best?

Wood shafts may be more popular because maple or wood is easier to work with and make. I don't think many cuemakers could make a fiber glass shaft.

Better meaning more control, other than house cues I used a very long time ago that was the first time I have ever used a 2 piece maple cue and I felt like I had more control over what the cue ball does, but after using a cuetec for so many years im not sure if it would affect my game at all. I found a players cue on the ozone website without the wrap that im gonna order and try, I liked my buddies cue but I didnt like the linen wrap

If you like your cuetec but want to try a maple shaft, look into buying a cuetec R360 cue. It is cuetec's low deflection maple shaft cue. You can find them relatively cheap, somewhere in the range of $150-200. I'm sure if you go to the WFS section here, someone will have one you can buy used and get a good deal.

My only input would be that when I first started playing I used a cue with a fibreglass shaft. After learning the game a lot better, I tried it out again and it had extreme amounts of deflection and was very hard to use so I gave it away to the local B&G's Club with a bunch of other stuff.

Try out different shafts and use what you like.

There are reasons why virtually NO advanced player uses a fiberglass sahft. A maple shaft will give you feedback, a fiberglass will not! A fiberglass shaft will also deflect the cue ball more than any other shaft! You can get a maple shaft to fit your existing cue, I suggest you get one!

1967, worked in a pool hall while in HS. Bought a fiberglass cue as my first cue. Got so much crap from the players for it I bought a Viking. Life can be hard with a fiberglass cue. Bought a McDermott Belicini composite the other day, put the shaft away and gave it a plain McDermott maple shaft... what is the term some use?... Hits like a monster? Kinda fun to use.

Try the new shaft idea, Players HXT are decent shafts.

The shaft has very little to do with 'control'. That was probably more to do with the quality of the tip.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a fiberglasss shaft other than the huge stigma it has being associated with 'cheap' cues. All that matters is radial consistancy, which is more likely to be better in a cheap fiberglass shaft than in a cheap maple shaft.

Everything else about the shaft is subjective. Size, taper, 'assumed' feedback are all nothing more than personal preference. The only real advantage to a maple shaft is you can actually change much of the 'preference' stuff after the fact.

Not that you really need to have any good reason to change if you feel like it.

My biggest complaint with fiberglass coated shafts is that they feel "sticky", especially in humid environments. I suppose you could wear a glove, but I'm not crazy about those either.

I agree with others fiberglass gets dirty and sticky and wood can be customized. try buying a shaft with your pin and a good tip. You won't regret it. I like a 15 inch pro taper and a tip between 12.6-12.75 with a moori medium tip.

i agree

i dont like cue tec shafts they are too sticky for me. you could buy a maple shaft for you cue tec.
I dont see why that wouldnt work or pick up a used mcdermott for about 150.00
cue tec cues are good for breaking or bar fights. i dont care for the feel of the hit and the sound and feed back. my opinion only .
I cant keep a good used mcdermotts in stock they go as soon as i show them. If you lived close to me i would let you try out a couple different cues with different tips.

The players cue arrived today. I like the feel of it although I haven't got to shoot with it yet. It has a le pro tip on it right now but it i decide to keep it I will probably change it, my cuetec has a moori on it and I like it. Thanks for all the advice and help!!
