Fifteen Ball?

There must be dozens of games one can play on the pocket pool table. The standard seems to be nine ball, texas express, three fouls. The game seems to favor the more skilled player of the safety and the break.

Being the visionary I am, (IMOM), I thought why don't they play a game with all fifteen balls. The money ball being the black 8. Rack like rotation eight in the middle. After the break the player must either shoot the one ball or the fifteen ball, his choice. If he shoots the fifteen ball his next shoot options are the one ball or the fourteen. If he misses then it is the opponents same option. You play just like nine ball, make the black 8 aspa. You can play safeties if you like and probable will since there a lot of traffic on the table. It may be more difficult since your opponent has two object balls to shoot at instead of one. The game is won once someone pockets the black eight legally, the last ball pocketed or a legal combination made prior to all the balls being pocketed.

I have not road tested this game yet and was wondering if any of yall have every played something like this. What do you think of the format?
It seems to be an interesting format with dual object balls and dual shapes.

Let me know what ya think.

It is called rotation and the object is to accummulate 61 points, adding face value of each ball made.

I've played a game with this kind of concept before (hit either the highest or lowest ball), but it wasn't a race to the 8-ball, it was a race to 61 points like Black-Balled said.

It's an interesting game with the 61 rule, but it's a little too easy to run out, unless the table is badly clustered. It would be significantly harder if you had to get to the 8, and would introduce more potential creativity in which pattern you choose as the easiest way to get to the 8. Running them in order (down from the 15 or up from the 1) is the shortest way to get there, but probably not usually the easiest; there would be a compromise between the number of shots in the pattern vs. the difficulty of getting from each shot to the next.

Next time I have the chance, I'm going to try this as a practice drill. Sounds like fun.

Rotation type games have been around for years. In fact 9 ball and 6 ball are only shorter versions of very similar games played with 15 balls. As a older member of this forum, I remember 15 ball rotation games where very popular. To run a rack of 15 ball rotation was a real feat as a Kid.

As pool becomes even more main stream, I feel you might be on to something. The skill level of players is tested more when playing 15 ball Rotation type games. IMHO Ball-In-Hand rules have taken away from the skill of the game. I must admit that while it is hard to find a non Ball In Hand game, I enjoy them more. Ask the new generation to shoot a Spot Shot and they have no Idea what you are talking about.

We played this game about forty-five years ago. Give it a try; it's not bad.

I've played rotation fourty years ago with the old guys, this is not rotation or 61. It's not Crazy Eight ball. It's a nine ball type game using same type of rules, the eight ball as the money ball and it gives the shooter the option of two object balls, either high or low and thus greater patterns used in order to get out.

It's amazing how many of the replies to posts on this forum reveal that the replier did not read the original post, isn't it?
