First 8 Pointer (Possibly Firewood)

Here's a photo of something I threw together this weekend. That purple heart looks dull, but in about 2 days it will be bright purple. Not sure if I'll keep it or not. I like the looks, but those white veneers being uneven at the bottom has me going insane. I'm not sure what caused it. This is the first 8 pointer I've attempted and also the first time I've had to recut the cue. The points are all dead even and the short points appear perfectly centered, so I'm not sure why the bottoms aren't intersecting in the right spot. I guess I'll have to play with this one some more.

No, this is not for sale.

seems like i seee alot of 8 pointers that do that at the base of the small points.i always wondered why too.

I had a Carolina Cue with the same thing also on an 8 pointer, 2 of the short points were even and the other 2 weren't.

I'm thinking it might be the height of the blade on the Milling Machine. It doesn't have to be off by much for that to happen. I'll look at it and see if I can get it perfect.

Are you using a double angle cutter?

One word....AXIS!!
When you went to do the recuts, you were off just a hair. This is why 8 pointers are tough to do. It just takes practice. Good color combo!

8 points

Nope.. no OCD there. =o]

Your attention to detail is greatly appreciated by your customers I'm sure. If you get something together for sale make sure you post it up here first. I bet you have a line of people waiting to collect your work. Those are beautiful wood combinations also. :R:

I am not joking when I tell you that I did not sleep last night thinking about this monstrosity and I already was pretty sure I knew what caused the problem. It will be days before I can make another attempt, so it is going to bother me until then.

I plan on finishing up the cue, but I may change my mind before I get much further along.

Show us the A joint end of the front. The problem should show up there.
If I were to make a bet, it would be that the center of the cutter isn't at the center of the blank. You can't tell on a 4 pointer, or even a 6 pointer that doesn't over lap. But, when they over lap, it shows all evils.
The other possibility is that you didn't get the front, back into the jig exactly where it was when you cut the first set of points.
All said, now you know why a lot of "cuemakers" shy away from over lapping points.
Good luck!

I agree that I think the cutter isn't at the exact center of the workpiece. I'll try and get a photo of the end later today.

Yeah, sure looks like cutter height to me. Notice how the cross formed by the points, don't intersect with the center. Adjust that and you should be fine.

Thanks for the confirmation. I was pretty sure that was the cause, but haven't had time to do another test run.
