First Recorded Straight pool session--28 ball run

your second shot off the first rack was the 12ball? i would have taken the seven and used that 12 for a nice, easy secondary break leaving the 1ball as an insurance ball. i'll watch more later... you used the 4ball as a secondary b-ball but the results were not great.

If you want to learn, I highly recommend 2 100 ball run videos with commentary - Dallas West and Jim Rempe. Each does a 100 ball run and provide commentary on their thought process during the run. I know there was a link to download the Dallas West video in another thread in this forum, and you can get the Jim Rempe video from Accu-Stats.

I watched the first four balls of your video b/c I need to go somewhere. What I saw looks good. The proper shot after the break was the 12 ball. By shooting the 7 ball as one poster suggested would have caused you to shoot over the 3 ball from down table and without a doubt you would have had to use the bridge. Not a good way to get started into a rack. I will watch the rest of the video, when I get back.

Thanks guys, Im using the camera now to record progress. I am really looking foward to blackjack's commentary. I have been attempting to play this game for about a year now. No one plays straight pool here locally so its hard to find a straight pool game and play with better straight pool players. If you ask someone to play straight pool here, you get "Oh,thats what I play, straight 8".

I have quite a few straight pool videos and I also own a few books on it. My problem is after watching, reading and rewatching and rereading I get lost on the table easily. I watch straight pool videos almost everyday at work when it gets slow and I like seeing the high runs.

no, you just shoot it left-handed like dick lane recommends.

Travis, I forgot to mention in my first post that there was no need to break up the balls with the 12 ball b/c they were broke up enough to work with, as you did.
At 5:20 you shot a ball in the left corner. That was the wrong shot. It took you across the table letting that cue roll. You knew it b/c you stated that good old four letter "S" word right after the shot. The correct shot was the 6 ball bumping the 8 ball or 14 ball if there was enough room to get by the 15 ball. Remember, when bumping balls. Try to figure out where the bumped ball is going. It went in the pocket. Turned out you had another shot. You might of needed that bumped ball for position.
Good position from the Key ball to the break. As for the break. A little soft but good enough. Here on the 14.1 Forum there is a Thread going right now about "Old School" shooting. This is a fine example of picking off balls to run a rack.
I could tell as you got closer to the end of the 2nd rack, you were getting nervous. It really came out when you pocketed the 1 ball. You then were a little off on position for the 14 in the side pocket.
Big mistake by shooting the 8 ball in the corner. That was a great break shot. The 14 in the side was still the correct shot. The cue ball would of came off that right rail for a stop shot on the 12 ball in the left top corner. By taking that 8 ball it lead to the down fall of the run.
Over all good shooting. I am very interested in hearing Blackjack's comments. Keep up the good work.

28 is a good start

Travis ~ I think you have good fundamentals - stance, bridge, posture, etc. Your stroke reminds me of mine more than anyone I've ever seen.

I watched most of your clip, but don't have a great deal of time right now. And I'd say you have the best getting ready to critique it now in the form of Blackjack.

One thing that surprised me was when you played the 5 up the rail in the first rack - you followed with the CB. Then you had to play what I felt was a great candidate for a key ball in the side and go around the table under the rack. This just led to more problems. You recovered, but it was an opportunity for a miss. Look at it again. Could you have played the 5 up, stopped for the 9 in the side, then picked off the 4 or 5 balls near the spot? That's what I was expecting and was horrified when I saw the CB follow the 5 up the rail.

Sad that you don't have people to play straight pool with in your neck of the woods. Where you at?

I did the commentary and then saved the video in HD, which pushed it up over 500 MB (507 MB to be exact) so I ended up having to upload it to youtube.

IMO, most of your errors are correctable.

You need to look at the shots from behind the object ball and the pocket, as well as behind the cue ball.

You need to master the art of the stop shot - there were several places in that run where you could have benefited from that.

You also have a tendency to baby your break shots. There is no need to be tentative, no matter what you're faced with... just keep shooting them until they're scared of YOU.

My comments are just suggestions that are being given so that you can improve. If you have any questions, get with me.

David pretty much covered it all on this evaluation great job. There was a few things that I saw that I would of done differently and thought of doing my own voice over along with daves to be kinda like Siskel and Ebert. If I can figure out how to do so I will give it a try.

I cannot download Dave's video off of Youtube, i dont have the software to do so. but i am gonna try to work with the original Vimeo file. i am not quite as good as it as dave is but i am willing to try just to add in my $0.02

If not, good job to you both. Pay attention to davey. He really helped out my game alot. I am sure Dave has my evaluations on his YouTube channel.

Keep up the great work, and keep the videos comin !

David, great job. What a difference when you can go play by play and make comments. Really a professional job.

If you have the updated version of the Real Player, you can download the videos from youtube very easily. Depending on what video editing software you have, you may have to convert the file prior to editing.

I missed a few things - I saw them after I uploaded the video - but alas, I am only slightly human (borderline). I don't think I have uploaded any of your videos to youtube. I know that you uploaded the 4 main evals to Vimeo - if you would like, I can upload them when I have some spare time. I have uploaded many of the videos that were added into your evaluation already, and those videos have received positive feedback.

I really would love to hear your commentary on this run, as we all see things differently and do things differently. For me, its easier for me to learn by watching how other players get through the rack - and when you have the player explaining, or if you have someone critiquing the run, you see things that you may have missed entirely. I look forward to hearing it!
