first report from Galveston

Hu, I'm inclined to agree with you. So far this has all the makings of a top quality annual event. I was skeptical from the very beginning. However, I'm gradually changing my opinion.

Yesterday in Galveston, I spoke with one of the guys who's close to the major guy. He told me than Rone and the others are used to making legitimate huge real estate deals for multi millions. He said that when Rone heard that everyone was questioning the dependability of the purses, he was shocked. I don't think Rone's group fully realized that they were dealing with a group of people that have a long history of being taken advantage of by shady characters; and who are typically left in the lurch.

Of course we won't know for certain until the end of the event. But it sure looks legit to me. This has all the makings of a great annual classic event. If they make it through the first 2-3 years, it could rival the DCC in popularity.

Now for mundane news: There's been no major action, and only modest cheap action. There are 25 marquee names, along with another 30 top road dogs-- all standing around feeling each other out, and acting like they're too important to be interested... Efren gave a decent player (name unkonwn to me) 11-8 for cheap sets. I believe Billy I. was getting 9-6, plus hit & the pick from Scott Frost. Stakes unknown. Frost had offered 10-6 to both Lil John and Danny Smith. They both turned him down!! I was surprised at Lil John. Perhaps the jack wasn't right.

The Calcutta was startingly cheap! I don't think guys realized that there would be a calcutta. I think the most paid for a player was $600! And that was for ME! (kidding) I think horses will bring suitcases full of dough for next year. I'm guessing that the 9/10 ball Calcuttas will be much heavier.

Where are the players gambling at i.e. Legends, etc?

sounds very very promising

Doc,

Joey's very early report about the road dogs seeming to be there in force and your report are what have me really pumped about future events. I just had the nails drove in the coffin of my plans to sneak to Galveston a couple days this year, scheduling conflict killed the last hope. However I am very hopeful that this will be one of the biggest events of the year for years to come. If the payouts come to pass as expected and it gets the rep as an action event it'll be fantastic.

Rumour has it that "pooladdict" from the forum lost 9-1 in the first match in the AMATEUR 9-ball division after the opponent ran 7 consecutive racks. lol. amateur?

The Amateur events are on 7-foot tables; right? A strong B Player can put together a 7 pack if he is hitting them well that day.

I am a C Player and have put together 4 and 5 packs on a 7 foot table. Not often, but I have done it a couple of times.

Well said, I can get hot and run a nice pack on a 7, and I suck at pool....they should have at least used 8's for the amateur.....at $200 entry, I would have expected 9's to tell the truth....

Regardless, I do hope it goes off well.....honestly, if they would have appeared here on AZ in April, answered questions about the pay-outs, solicited help from some of the very knowledgeable tourney directors, and filled everybody in, there would have easily been twice the turn-out....

Am I missing another bracket?.....I only count 44 in the one pocket draw.

Nevermind....I guess they have bracket B posted also....did not see it when I hit on the link.

It looks like that got a pretty good draw for the one-pocket. Some very good early round match-up's. I think the Alex-Scott match will be a good one!!

John...That was certainly possible, when the DCC was in Louisville. Now that it is across the river and down a ways, I don't know if those things are available. I've stayed at "extended stay" motels many times. I have yet to see any that have multiple bedrooms (or in most cases any bedroom).

You can if you have a car and several people to room with. Look for extended stay places and short term apartments.

I haven't stayed at the hotel more than a handful of times in the past ten years. We almost always rent condos.

I have yet to see any hotels w a true suite set-up except the Embassy Suites. Generally at ES, you enter a 'living room' area and straight ahead behind a shuttable door is the main BR area. Someone can sleep in the front room and snore like a chainsaw and very little sound will make it into the BR area.

The frame with the brackets are squished out by the ads on the Galveston pages.

Here is the CueSports International link to the brackets: --->CSI LINK<---

Just got an update from Galveston.
They are going to have a 2k added tourney for the players who got bumped out of the amateur event.
Im glad they are doing the right thing.

I would love to know about how many women are playing in the Amateur 8 ball? I was just a few clicks from going and am regretting it a bit. I am also wondering if any of the players from "Spain" are there?

Dave...That's true, as I have stayed at ES too, and they are very nice, but the price is more like $100/night, or more! Still, they have a killer breakfast!

Rumor is that there are at least 2 Norwegians that are not listening to Gree Leenders (WPA) and are going for the $$$$$. Good for them. LOL

Rodney said he would be there tomorow but he is coming from Portugal, not Spain.

They are starting the 8 ball tomorrow or Monday. I will check it out for you cuechick. From what I have seen, you would have done well here. You could have won a few in the pro 9 ball as well if your speed is the same or better than it was three years ago.

Send me a PM if you want and I will give you my px.

FYI Allison is undefeated. She beat Yu Ram in a very close one tonight. Yu Ram will play Ranola at 10 tomorrow am. There are no big names in Allison's way anytime soon, but a match with Vivian is a possibility before the finals. Allison is playing very good pool right now, and seems to be very relaxed.
