First time in a pool hall

Finally I managed to find a poolhall in my region. A small one but a real one. Three 9 footers, no coin ops, paying for table time. Playing on the big tables is a great feeling, different from barboxes. Longer distances, but less clusters and scratches. I have to say my accuracy actually improved here. Better concentration maybe? I was playing two friends, not a real threat, but I still didn't lose a game. I feel satisfied with this being my first time. Could you please share your experiences about playing your first game on a 9 footer (those who played only on barboxes before)?
 
I learned how to play pool on 9 foot tables and eventually played on the bar boxes competitively. By that I mean in organized functions. After a night of competing and going back to the 9 foot tables, I have found my game to be that much better. I am a pretty good shot as it is but somehow with the less clutter, I can make shots and run the table.

Been playing for 15 years now.
 
Grew up on bar boxes. I was 16 the first time I played on a 9 ft. Couldn't make a ball on them. Fast foward almost 20 years and I'm still in the same predicament! :D

I expected just that to happen to me. Stay calm but concentrated and motivated and use your instincts. Evolution gave those to us so we could play better pool. You'll do fine :)

When you speak of evolution, I hope you didn't hurt pdfuser's feelings. Did you see the look on his face?
 
long, long ago in a small college town, a fellow student asked me to go with him to a pool hall. it was my first time (yikes), we went up some old creaky, wooden steps to the second floor. went in and there were nothing but 9 ft tables (there may have been one snooker table). I remember maybe 10 tables at most. he showed me the games of 9 ball, straight pool and bank. that was when a cigarette butt could be placed on the rails of the table. I have been hooked on the game ever since. :cool:

I'm very sorry, it wasn't my intention :( I always use wrong examples. That look is so touching...

I wish I could remember my first game ever on the big table, I started out on the 2 barboxes
in a room with those + 8 nine-footers. Just playing with friends.
I bet probably the owner invited me to play, and that was my first game on the big table but it was like 15+ years ago.
I still remember my first runout though, which was on the 9-footer. And I remember which table it was :)

I'm also of that generation that learned pool on 9' tables. The question in my day was whether your pool room still had a mixture of 9' tables and BILLIARD tables or just pool tables. To this day, I don't like playing on a small pool table.

You should be very grateful for having found a room such as the one you describe, and you should support it.
 
I started out on 8 foot tables then for a while played on 7 and 9 footers.

I too play my best on 9 foot tables, and I am about a ball worse on 7 foot tables.

I see a lot of folks better on 7 footers, I am not one of them.

I'm not gonna neglect the bars and 7 footers simply because I found this room, but I'll surely have fun on those 9 footers. I feel like investing more in my game and trying to get better than I am right now :)
 
By bar boxes, are we talking about valleys? My first league experience was in eight and nine foot tables. I didn't play on bar boxes until my first LTC. I play mostly on valleys now. When practicing I play on drop pocket tables, either eight or nine foot. My favorite thing in the world is ten ball on a diamond 7'. My first break and run was on a 9'

There is a thread about tables and StuartTKelley hasn't commented?
 
At the local YMCA we were turned away from the 9' tables because the older boys had a lock on those. We were told to go play on that table in the back room....a bumper pool table. what the hell is that?

The joke was on them....bumper pool taught me how to hit very very very softly and that has paid more dividends than first playing on a 9 footer.

Ha ha, now I can kick those big boys' asses! (cept the ol' Y is long gone now)

first pool

I sso dam old they didn't have bar boxes----we played on 9ft-and snooker table5/10. cost .10 cue rotation only--snooker .20 cue low man payes for al . no women and only soft drinks. very strict owner[BLACK-CAT]. good times.60yr ago-shoot on america!!!!:thumbup:
