After watching CNN and reading a few recent AZB threads, it made me realize that like the general population and politics, AZ seems to be just as divided when it comes to techniques, who teaches them and what's right and what's wrong.

Every thread that's created whether it be aiming, stroking, elbow-dropping, wrist-locking, eye placement, eye patterns, foot placement or otherwise, it seems they always seem to disintegrate into battles over those who claim to know more or those who claim to play better. After a decade, there's no doubt that there will never be choruses of Cumbaya. It's staggering to think how many good constructive back-and-forths are lost to trying persuade readership in the other direction instead of information sharing. We have a teaching and learning "gridlock."

It would be nice to segregate all instructional topics (aiming, ask the instructor, etc) into two separate folders/forums.

Maybe split the Ask the Instructor forum into: Ask the Player and Ask the Professor

Maybe split the Aiming Forum into: Aiming by the Player and Aiming by the Professor

Professor, meaning, "science-based instructors" and the like.

When someone wants to share their information, they post in the appropriate area and those who post there do so not to debate, but ask questions in a constructive manner in an attempt to learn the information. No "player" type poster is allowed to go into the "Professor" forums to debate their lack of playing ability and debate the complicated nature of their posts and no "professor" type poster is allowed to question/debate posts made in the player areas. Only questions related to "learning" are allowed in either area. Debating in either area isn't allowed, only questioning related to legitimate learning. If you don't agree with something, you can post about it and discuss in the opposite forum -- but never create conflict in the originating forum.

That way, I think a LOT of fights will be averted and it might spark a new renaissance of information here on AZB. Those who want the science approach have a place to go and those who want a pro's insight have a place to go -- both segments of learners will be in bliss as they can learn in peace and quiet.

spider, i have to say you are absolutely wrong!!

Um, read CJ's wrist thread. It's disgusting.

If threads like that are right, I love being wrong.

I think both camps are correct in their own way -- but much info is lost for the lack of a little civility and tolerance. That's why I like this concept.

I understand your intentions but those people who are the worst offenders are not going to be swayed at all by a forum title distinction.

Honestly tho.... I don't see a huge divide universally. I see mostly just a handfull of people who don't know how to play nice no matter the play ground they're on.

:)

The problem I'm seeing is not that people disagree and refuse to budge... it's that they do it disrespectfully and they have a serious case of dog-with-a-bone syndrome.

It took me years of forum debating before I realized that I don't have to jump in every little thread I disagree with, and I don't have to continue the back-and-forth with someone until they raise a white flag (which is never going to happen anyway).

Because it took me a long time, I hold out hope that certain other regulars will eventually have the same revelation. People gotta learn how to just state their case and move on... or just not jump into certain threads in the first place.

I'm wondering if a little more aggressive moderation might be the answer, rather than separate forums. I've heard a couple of other forum members claim that's what the forum needs most. You can get banned if you directly call someone a motherf*cker, but otherwise it's pretty hands off.

The thread that you mentioned is 64 pages long. There's a lot of useful information in it. A lot of which is there because of people disagreeing.

Would you rather that thread just be a couple of pages long with everybody just agreeing with each other?

I do agree that there's a certain amount of respect that has been lost in AZ. The part that puzzles me is - the longer I hang around here, it seems like I have a natural tendency to be more civil with people, not less. For others, it's the opposite.

What's funny is I think I see more civility between those that disagree over in the NPR forum than in the Main Forum.

I'm all for the back and forth. I even enjoy it. Maybe we just need a little bit more civility is all. But don't over do it

Gridlock

Gridlock...the best revenge!
If you think that's stupid just remember who used the concept first!

Honestly though, I like the back and forth on ideas
relating to pool. Justifications given in support
of the various views helps me separate the chaff
from the grain. I seldom read more than the first
few pages.

Interestingly enough some of the instructors are
the most narrow minded. Go figure.

Too many special forums already....

We have those here who are so dead set on proving they are the authority that they interfere with a good exchange of information. I might even be guilty myself...I hope not but hey...it's not something a person wants to admit to him or herself.

Better moderation would be a good thing but I don't have any great suggestions on how to do that.

People are people. We have Thaigers, sfleinens, Dubs, Spiders, CJs, Dr Dave's, Scott Lee's, English's, etc etc It is really a quite amazing group!

Please don't give me more sections to wade through...

Ken

I like this post.
If the forum was OVER-moderated, it wouldn't be nearly as interesting.
...who wants to hang around a pool hall where the owner acts like a
warden?

If your bent is to look for something good, you'll find it on AZ.
If you want to argue with an attitude?......
...make sure you pack a lunch...:bash::duck::poke::smash:
