Flashback to 1986... Chicago

North Center Bowl, where the Whitaker scene takes place was a great old place. When you went up the stairs, the bar was at the top of the steps, pool tables to the right, and bowling lanes to the left. I was there once and the next time I went, there was a shiney new Starbucks in its place. RIP North Center Bowl.

Are any of the locations in the CoM even left or are they all Starbucks?

thanks for the link

What was the significance of what Forest Whitaker says in the end "...you think i need to lose some weight?" Was it meant to be a double entendre?

I've seen the movie, seen and played pool at several of the locations and as I'm sure our Hollywood friends would agree, as much as we'd like to believe it, it just doesn't look the same in real life. :D

Chris's is still around, but I'm not sure of the others.

Just rubbing it in, making fun of the old guy he just hustled.

Should have mentioned this before, but if you're ever at Navy Pier, the Ballroom where they filmed the last tournament scene at the very end of the pier is often open for folks to walk through. Actually, the whole end of the pier is one of the neater spots in Chicago.

I always interpreted it as Whitaker rubbing it in Newman's face that he just got hustled, with the key word being "weight" being used in a context that could portray a double meaning.

Like when you play somebody of a lesser caliber than yourself, sometimes you have to give up "weight." :p

I thought he was rubbing it in at first and just making kinda of a joke then I thought it meant that maybe Newman should have been getting a spot or some weight.

Does anyone know which scene(s) were shot at the Gingerman? I'm not sure I've been there enough times to recognize it as a movie set.

My Uncle was in the teamsters union and drove the prop truck for movies made in the Chicago area. This sign is something he gave me that I have been able to hold on to and wanted to share.

It's a little worse for wear. 8yr old kids aren't the best at taking care of things.

Very cool piece of pool memorabilia! Thanks for sharing!

thanks. that's how it occurred to me after seeing it again in this thread but I didn't make that connection before. probably because i wasn't exposed to AZB at the time ....

was that clever exchange in the book or was just added in the movie?
