3/8-10 vs radial vs g-10 radial(could someone also explain that one to me too)
i know the real answer is if there is a tight fit it doesnt matter
i tried a search and couldnt find a comparison thread (no pun intended)

so would you tell me some pros cons of the 3 pins above
or what "some people beleive "is the difference
even if the answer is
it doesnt matter as long as it produces a tight fit and its how the rest of the cue is made

G-10 pins will break before metal ones will...metal ones tend to bend instead.

You can tap, or live cut the threads for the 3/8-10. You have to tap for the radial.

Both are pretty common standard threads in cues these days. Pick your poison. Not sure if there are any pros vs. cons besides what Kelly already stated.
 
The radial pin has about 94% wood contact and as long as it is metal it is good. The g10 radial is not worth the effort as you can never get it to lock. You tighten the shaft and if you then just wiggle the shaft you will get a pop out of the joint. You will also notice that you have to retighten the shaft every so often. The g10 in the 3/8 x 10 does not do this. The new 3/8 x 10 or the so called 308 flat pitch is like the South West style pin except that it is 3/8 x 10 instead of 11. It has about the same wood contact as the radial.

The only reason to use a glass pin is to conserve weight on an already heavy forearm and balance the cue. If you need to save weight go with g10 glass 3/8 x 10 or Titanium.
 
One pro for the G 10 is that when your cue is used as a baseball bat to hit someone over the head it might just snap at the pin and leave the butt with just minor damage. This happen to a cue I made and I was amazed at how little damage was done to the cue. The shaft exploded into I belive 5 pieces but the butt was in perfect conditon minus and joint pin. It looked like it was faced off almost. Fixing it was pretty easy and the customer had his cue/bat back in a few days.

I like a 3/8" modified better than the radial pin. The radial pin is cool and everything and I don't mean to disrespect any one who uses it especially Mr Stroud who I have the utmost respect for. The radial pin has become so popular that you can't knock it, I just don't like the way it looks.

When I drill my minor for my pin, I use a slightly ground drill tap and then a bottom tap. Then I use a standard non ground drill tap and hand tap it to open the minor up until i can count 8 threads on the bottom of the tap. Then a very slight adjustment to the shafts for a perfect interference fit. This procedure produces a stepped minor within the shaft.

This way as my cue engages it gets tighter and tighter as the front part of my pin is very tight for the last 3 turns. My box decor rings never go out of alignment after setting with final hand tap and because I use an shaft insert and the threads never degrade like maple over time from wear and tear.

From left to right, bottom tap, standard drill tap and .004 ground drill tap on the drill fluke.

I use a 3/8" 14 tpi modified big pin with a flat face joint. Some call this a bastard thread but I like it because it makes it difficult for Predator shafts to show up on my cues. LOL.

Anything different in that to DPK or Bender's pin , Rick?

Joey,

Ray took an Omega DPK pin and put in on an optical comparator. He changed to nose geometry to round instead of flat chamfered. My butts and shafts marry perfectly to Mr. Bender's cues.

I had 500 pins made out of naval brass and had them chrome plated.
