The meaning of Grit

Melissa Herndon said:
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "gritty", but I am definitely taking it as a compliment. It sounds cool!

Thanks!

Melissa

The Thesaurus meaning;

grit - fortitude and determination.

Even though tenacious is a good word as are guts, moxie, backbone & gumption...GRIT came to my mind as I watched you. Not that I know anymore than anyone else here...I just know GRIT when I see it. Your a joy to watch and I assume we'll be seeing alot more of you!!

p.s...thank you Rich R. and PHM, I guess knowing me that long helps with the translation :p

Well, thank you very much! I think I knew what you meant all along...but no one has ever used that particular term to describe me, so it threw me off a little bit.

I'm a little puzzled that you didn't come up and introduce yourself though. You are an institution on this forum (and on the CCB), and I would have enjoyed meeting you very much. So, next year, I expect an introduction!

Best Regards,
Melissa

Melissa since you are a wpba player can you explain the reasoning of the second draw and tell us when the wpba started doing this. In the couple times I played many years ago they didn't do this and I'm just wondering what their thinking is.
Thanks
phm

Last year, the wPBA adpoted this format for one tournament because we had several more ESPN hours to fill, and using this format, you could get 7 matches out of one event (4 quarter-final, 2 semi-final and 1 final match).

I am not sure why they decided to use this format for the entire 2006 season. I think that they thought they might get more new faces into the TV rounds, but that hasn't really been the case. If they were televising the quarterfinal rounds, you would definitely see some faces that you hadn't seen much of before....but when it gets to the final four, it's the same old thing. You get any combo of a handful of girls. Allison, Karen, Ga-Young, Kelly F, Jeanette, Gerda, Vivian, and Monica. Helena gets in there sometimes, and Tiffany Nelson has made a few appearances as of late.

Anyhow, I like the idea of using this format once a year for a specialty event. But, I am hoping that they go back to the regular double-elim format in 2007. It just isn't fair to the girls who worked hard to stay on the winner's side. Case in point, Jennifer Barretta beating Allison to stay on the winner's side, only to turn around and draw her in the single-elim format. She got robbed, cheated, and screwed in my opinion. (Of course, she didn't complain....she got out there and almost beat Allison again. What a player! But, my point is....she shouldn't have been put in that position in the first place.)

LOL...sorry bout that. I'm so used to flying under the radar, forgive my lack of social skills...:D

and does anyone know which WPBA star met with Dennis Searing immediately after the event to discuss a new cue?

No - I know it wasnt Megan and i know that this player is changing cue makers. It isn't just a new cue.
What do I win?:)

It is the same player who is now a proud owner of a brand new pink Jack Justis case.

Yes I agree. It really is not fair.

My fiance Kathy played in the Women's APA national team tournament in 2003. In a field of 64 teams from arond the country, the last 4 in the winner bracket and the last 4 in the loser bracket were redrawn into a single elimination format and as luck would have it, Kathy's undefeated team ended up losing to a team that already had 1 loss and finished 5th.

I can see nothing fair about that at all.

Melissa we would be honored to buy you a drink in Peoria. Please stop by and say hello if you get a chance.

Best of luck

I'm sure Voodoo's guess was correct, but I can't believe GYK is giving up her Southwest. She must think the Searing cues are very special.

What is really surprising is that one of the major production cue makers hasn't signed her yet.

Yep-hard to figure.

Wu, after winning the WPC, had some cue sponsors approached him. He told me he asked them to build him cues so he could try them out. But he said unless he really liked the cue, he would not make the switch even if it meant he was going to lose a sponsorship.

I think in their minds, to win tournaments and to be the best they can be is more important than signing a sponsorship contract. They usually consider it a major decision to switch their playing shafts, not to mention their playing cues.

Ga Young has been using a SW. I would imagine it being quite difficult to impress her with a better cue.

I was told one major production cue company has tried to approach Ga Young through another Canadian female player, who was also a sales rep of this company, a while back.

Ga Young told her she was playing with a Southwest so she was not interested in their "low deflection" shafts or cues for that matter.:)

I heard that Dennis has a big following in Taiwan. She probably got to play and inspect quite a few there in her adopted hometown.

I hear there will be pink in this cue-no hearts as far as i know.
