Florida Cuetec Classic

Jennifer B beats Allison

Friday nite-Jennifer Barretta beats Allison 9-7 to make the final 16.

Jennifer was down 4-0 to Allison but didnt look beat-Somewhere around 5 she caught her and i dont think Allison led again. Jenn seemed super focused and totally determined.

Debbie Schjodt lost hill hill to Dawn on the B side. Megan knocked out Ewa.
Belinda and Melissa M were in a nail biter. Melissa H knocked out Hsin.

Xiao Ting Pan lost maybe 9-5 to Gerda-Her break was not working. She hit them solid and parked whitey twice as often as anybody else but nothing would fall or she ahd no shot, She is still in and im not counting her out.

MIss Ga Young Kim looked beautiful in her outfit with her new Jack Justis pink and black case complete with several little hearts. She made very quick work of Sarah Ellerby in a winners side match 9-3 or so. Tiffany won as did Jeannette. Kelly F won her match also. Karen C was way up maybe 8-2 but Tracie loooked like didnt know it and fought back finally going down 9-6 or so.

The tight pocket tables are playing extra tough-lots of misses. I would be surprised if they are not shelved at the first opportunity.

Thank you very much for the updates Nostroke. Johnnyt

Wow! That's exciting news about one of very own "ask the pros" columnists here on AZB. Wish I'd been there to see it. Second time in her career Jennifer has beaten #1. She beat then #1 Karen Corr at WPBA Florida in 2004 in a televised match, too.

Also pleased to hear that Ga Young is having a solid tourney, as I recall you were a bit concerned about her form.

SJM,
Sounds like it could be exciting. For those forum members that don't remember, Jennifer Barretta was gracious enough to join a group of AZB members for an afternoon of pool during the Peoria tournament last year - way beyond the call of duty. We should all be wishing her the best.

I notice also that Melissa Herndon is poised one match away from the round of 16. Unfortunately, she was matched up with Sarah Rousey a couple of rounds before that and won a close one. I HATE when my favorite players have to play each other.

I also noticed that Jeanette Lee had to play Vivian V. AGAIN. It seems like they must play each other once or twice every tournament - a very tough rivalry. I must say that if the pockets are very tight I like JL's chances; she does seem to thrive on the tough tables.

Correction

Megan lost to Ewa

XTP in final 16 Tracie too.

Melissa Morris made it too-Tracie and Melissa are both waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overdue for a decent finish..

Oh Yeah- Jennifer drew Allison again in the final stage. If anyone can do it, Jenn can. If she wins the lag, i like her chances even more.

Anyone know the blind draw of the 8 on the 1 loss side to the 8 no loss side? Thank you. Johnnyt

Tracie loses on the hill to Tiffany. should have won.

XTP beats K Fisher and then gets drilled by Jeanette.

Jennifer B has the lead on Allison 6-4 but loses 9-6 or so.

Allison ahead of Tiffany now to make final 4.

GYK whips M Morris then gets beat/outplayed by Monica to miss TV.

Karen tramples Gerda to make final 4

Karen, Jeanette, Monica are definite for TV with Allison likely to join them-so much for the new format producing new faces

I guess I'm not in the loop about the WPBA format, but throwing all the names in a hat for the semi-finals? What an odd format. Jennifer beats Allison, knocks her to the B side of the charts, and then has to play her all over again when Jennifer is on the winners' side of the chart? Are all the WPBA tournamets like this, or is this a new format for TV purposes?

For the life of me, I can't understand the logic of this format. Then again, there are other formats I have seen on TV, designed for TV purposes, that I find odd as well.

For the top 20, it can go either way. If one of the top 20 is unfortunate enough to get knocked to the B side of the charts, they got a chance to make it to the top 8 in a brand-new single-elimination format incorporated into a double-elimination format tournament.

For Jennifer Baretta to have knocked Allison to the B side of the charts and then have to play her again the very next round, Jennifer doesn't get a chance to lose twice as Allison does.

Now that I think about it, I think the WPC format changed mid-stream too.:p

Of course, I also do not like it when a double-elimination tournament follows the format to the end, with the exception of the winners' round. The winners' side player never gets a chance to lose, like the B side player. That is what happened to Mike Davis at this year's pro event at Super Billiards Expo when Dennis Hatch won the whole shebang.

North Carolinian Michael Coltrain beat Keith McCready at a Q-Masters tournament in the winners' round from the B side, after Keith knocked him on the B side. Then Michael comes back, plays one race and wins the whole tournament, with Keith never getting a chance to lose a round like Michael did.

If they're going to have week-long tournaments, I think the winners' round should follow the same format all the way to the end in a double-elimination format tournament. I never did like that format. JMHO, FWIW.

JAM i would have to agree

Personally, after looking at the brackets, i feel that despite whatever format the WPBA is using and for whatever reasons, that Jenn got totally robbed.

That's why i happen to like the JOSS format, cause EVERYONE is entitled to their one loss, even if it's in the finals.
I will never understand why the 1 race in the finals still continunes. It's a CRIME as far as i'm concerned if the winner of the event had the opportunity to lose, and the runner up didn't.

Who knows if Jenn blew her wad, and expelled most of her energy beating Alli, to have to get up and play her the very next match and be knocked out of the tournament? Where is the justice in that?! That's just a bunch of crap if you ask me, now i know that there will be some players that say it's just luck of the draw, but i would have to challenge them on this every single time.

As others have suggested, this tournament format stinks.

To clarify, though, the eight survivors on the loser's side are drawn randomly into the eight winners side survivors, so if you win your fiirst three, you will draw somebody with a loss, and if you have a loss, you'll draw an undefeated player. Nonetheless, the format is completely randomizing the tournament results and the WPBA rankings.

In March, Jennifer Barretta won her first three at WPBA Michigan City, drew Allison Fisher, and finished ninth. As we know, it happened again this week at WPBA Florida. So, in two tournaments in which she played brilliantly, Jennifer has very little to show for it.

Nothing wrong with having some luck in the draw, but suddenly the draw has become ten times more significant than ever before. It's hard to believe that the players aren't up in arms over this format.

This tournament format should be put out with tomorrow's trash.

its because of this format that i will probably not attend the WPBA Event in Peoria this year. i always liked to watch pool all day and night on friday and saturday, and the last matches of the evening on saturday were always very entertaining as players fight for TV time.

this format just isnt good.

That's been worked out. The Saturday night tension is back, as the quarterfinals are no longer part of the TV round. All day action on both Friday and Saturday is, once again, guaranteed.

This format stinks for the players, and for the diehards like myself who feel it compromises the tournaments results and the WPBA rankings. For those who just want to watch pool, there's not much in it.

I'm sure if the WPBA had a BLIND vote of it's members this new format would be voted down bigtime. Johnnyt:rolleyes:

That is good news as we will be there Thursday thru Saturday. I did not particularly care for last year's format. We only got to see 4 matches on Saturday instead of a plethora of nail-biters.
