Florida Open 2025, August 5-10, Orlando, Caribe Royale

The Florida Open appears to be a rousing success for Matchroom. They took a shot and it seems to be paying off.

One of the play by play announcers said the crowds the first two days were the biggest he has seen at any MR major, including Hanoi. JJ wasn't quite as sure the crowd was bigger than Vietnam in the early stages, but he thought it was close.

The weekend should be even better. Sunday tickets evidently are either sold out or almost sold out.

All week there has been a pleasant background buzz and you can see lots of fans. I would be very surprised if the Florida Open does not become a regular major. The US still has one of the best pool cultures in the world.

Only the Philippines might top the US, but we will find out in October. The Manilla Open is a another attempt by MR to find the right venues for big events.

MR has to give Texas a shot,. Could be another Florida. Imagine having a Florida and Texas Open in the runup to the US Open. Could be great.

Another thing an announcer said that caught my ear: Biado asked a WNT producer after he won the WPC if that meant he was going to be on the Reyes Cup team. Seems it's quickly becoming a big thing among Asian players.

Two Americans left, Shane and Anthony Meglino. I saw a video of a Meglino interview from the Derby. Goes to college and shoots competitively on the side. Does anybody know more about him?

I see the Dynamic Duo from Spain has risen (Alcaide and FSR).

I haven't been paying a lot of attention to this event. I have been working and was hoping to catch up on all the inside smut on Facebook, but there's not much about it on Facebook, other than the Matchroom Pool Facebook page. Glad to see this thread is active with tournament tidbits. :)
i posted this in the other thread

Because many will end up losing $ at every corners, travel, hospitality, vaca day off....and great chances at losing.... for too little of the Possible Prizes.

I can see the sport pick up when more Prizes ($$) are available.

it's also that some have good sponsorships, and some don't.

all players aren't equally attractive for sponsors, even if they're good players... marboys seems to be doing a good job with that (and visa stuff) for their players.

atencio, svb and mickey are looking the best. mickey struggled early on but in SE he's been great

i'm kinda rooting for atencio, so attacking and confident

Hello to all from Orlando. Another great day of pool is in the books and what a day it was. Capito eliminated Gorst but the lost his next so he is out. Thorpe was the beneficiary of a missed eight ball by Zielinski at double hill but went wrong one ball from the finish line in his next, thereby failing to reach the last 16. Having rallied from 8-3 down to win double hill vs Marvin Asis, Shaw returned to the same formula, falling 7-3 behind to Pehlivanovic, but rallying for a second consecutive double win. He led Max Lechner 9–6 in the next round, but Max caught fire and Jaysonfound himself in his third consecutive double hill match. Lechner was the one getting over the finish line. American Anthony Meglino played very well, easily beating both Jonas Souto and Mario He.

Players who made a big impression:

SVB and FSR
They look like the ones to beat for the title. If form holds, they will meet in the fist semi on Sunday.

Mickey Krause
Showed fine form vs Ouschan and then trounced Biado. Looks dangerous. Potential giant killer.

Aloysius Yapp
Quietly going about his business, he looks to be in excellent form and is a contender for the title.

David Alcaide
Tough not to take David seriously after his 10-3 win over Kaçi.

Jesus Atencio
He has shown very strong form all week and is possible dark horse.

Alexa Pecelj and Moritz Neuhausen
Both seen to be getting stronger with each match, and either might be a dark horse pick.

Max Lechner
Probably showed more heart on Friday than any other player. Rallied from 9-7 behind to beat Kural and the rallied from 9-6 down to beat Shaw.

Marvin Asis
it has been an awful Florida Open for the Filipinos, and Marvin Asis, who has shown very solid form, is the last Filipino standing.

Trung
I had never seen him play before, but his form has been sensational. He seems to be the wild card this weekend.

Great tournament so far, and I am looking forward to its conclusion. Thanks to all at Matchroom for producing this wonderful new event.

trying to replay day 4 and it says "HLS stream has an error"

Matchroom can't be bothered to package up their streams for the paying US customers until someone manages to wake up and get to work in the UK. Kind of pathetic treatment of a huge market for them. Just stream all 4 tables on youtube and limit it to the US market, why even bother with your own streaming, especially since it isn't much more than an afterthought?

"JAM: Two Americans left, Shane and Anthony Meglino. I saw a video of a Meglino interview from the Derby. Goes to college and shoots competitively on the side. Does anybody know more about him?"

Anthony Meglino is the top player in Florida and in the top 10 nationally - quietly – while keeping a full-time job.

Everyone in Florida is familiar with him, as he plays in tournaments all around the state every weekend - usually giving up massive handicap weight in local tournaments because of his 786 … and never complaining.

He is the house pro at “Beyond Billiards”, a great room in Davie, Florida (between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale) and he hosts weekly and monthly tournaments.

Many people here happy to see this run.

Go Anthony !!!!!
