Food At The Derby

Food at DCC

I must be the exception. I had the buffet on Thursday and Friday evening. Fridays was exceptional, seafood chowder, crabcakes and fried catfish. Pecan pie and chocolate cake were also great. Thursdays pulled pork and chicken (some kind of cream sauce) was also well worth the $12.95. I did pass on Saturdays buffet and had a great cheeseburg and fries in the bar. Maybe you all got turned off by being there earlier in the week.

Lmao

These two threads about the shitty food and stink bombs are hilarious to me. People from all over the nation coming to watch a major tournament and gamble for thousands of dollars complaining about the price of cheeseburgers and buffets, lol. The distinct smell of stink bombs being let off by the PLAYERS no less in a hotel with the word EXECUTIVE in its name. Raw hamburger meat and jerkeyed Prime Rib being served only because it was the week of the pool tournament and will get back up to speed after it is over. All of this is quite funny and I will definitely be there next year. Sounds like a great place.

last friday night i had a cheeseburger in the bar, well done, as i like it. it was so good, saturday i thought i would do the same.
ordered a "well done" burger again
out comes a bloody ass raw cheeseburger. i about puked when i bit into it.
only took another 30 minutes to make another that sure wasn't what i would call "well done". medium at the very best
and they forgot the cheese sticks i ordered too.
next year, i'll drive wherever i have to, to eat someplace else.

sunday morning, breakfast in the main dining room. no coffee or water refills, after waiting and waiting , i got up, grabbed the closest coffee pot and did it myself. ok, they are busy i thought. again, no refill by waitress. this time i grabbed the coffee pot and let a few waitresses and the hostess know about it, rather loudly, that if i had to continue to wait on myself, i wasn't going to pay the F***in' bill. they copped my bill.

off the subject, but why is it, that when some people stay in a hotel, they act like idiots, running up and down the halls, making a hell of a lot of noise, talking at the top of thier lungs, disturbing those who want to sleep?

also, another thing, i'm a smoker. other than outside, the bar was a smoking area. saturday the 7th, bar did not open till 1pm. with almost 500 players and who knows how many spectators, i would think they would have been open much earlier.

Did you try their burger? The year I went (3 yrs. ago) I ate 27 cheese bugers in five days. Good stuff.

I think I paid for half of them too...

Had the same thought

Have to admit I found this thread a bit amusing as well. Not to disagree with any of the criticisms of the food, just the fact that the same people who might drop $500 sidebetting on a match without a quibble can get all upset about a $1.00 increase in the price of a meal.

For me, I was just glad to have some kind of food available right there on site. I ate a lot of cheeseburgers in the restaurant, found the chili at the snack bar to be quite good (along with the chocolate chip cookies!), made do with the breakfast buffet (and filled my own coffee cup a few times), and chalked up a really terrible "roast beef" dinner in the restaurant to a "bad roll."

Hey, don't get me wrong, I'll be really pleased if you guys write letters and get them to improve the food for next year!:)

Its not the price of the meal but the quality. Greg Sullivan has made enormous additions and improvements to one of the finest events in the game we love. He has worked so hard to build such a great venue that we can look forward to. I cant think of a time when there is no Derby. People will be talking about it like the legendary Johnston City.
Unfortunately the restaurant in the Inn is a black mark on the Classic and they been getting away with it for years.

I play and gamble better when I feel good. I feel good when I EAT and Sleep good. When I eat that crap they parcel out at the Inn it just defeats the purpose of meeting a tough opponent in the next round. I dont take drugs, I dont smoke, and I dont drink much. I just need some good food every once in a while to make me whole. These guys make McDonalds look like Maxims.

I have one question for management at the Inn. Dont you guys have pride in your work? In what you produce. Or are you just hustling and sharking us pool players because you are the only game around.

This should answer your question....

True Story - While paying my check one afternoon, there was a nice local couple (maybe in their 50's) paying their check. They knew the lady manager taking care of the register and she asked how their meal went.
The gentleman says, "It was OK but why have you raised the price a buck and eliminated some of the best stuff from the salad bar"?
The manager replies - "Oh, don't worry about that - that's is just for this week with this pool tournament going on and everything will be back to normal by next week"!
Man - That really burned me up!

I had heard that the hotel across the street had decent food. After trying a few things (to my disliking) I stuck to hamburgers & chili. I did order potato skins from the bar one night that were also pretty good. I'll go across the street one night next yr just to try out the other restaurant.

I was staying at the Best Western Suite down the road, there was free breakfast buffet and a little fridge and microwave. The bed was so unbelivable comfortable I went into a total coma once I lied down.

I tried the dinner buffet one night, it was not too bad, but I did not really eat much. I ordered from the menu most of the time and it was fine. I only ordered simple items and they were not really that bad. The steak was quite nice in my opinion.

I do not think the service was really excellent but they were in all honesty trying to be nice to me, so it was acceptable. One girl kept trying to interupt me when I was having a meeting but I think she really did not know any better so it was not a big deal.

I do not like the snacks or the small burger served on a little trolley by some girls.

I like the breakfast buffet, it is the first time I saw grit(sp?) and it was interesting. My last breakfast was a treat by a friend so I really cannot complain.:)

I have seen worst and have been to better places, all in all, it is not really that bad.

Next year, I will try to stay at the executive hotel and I will probably eat at the resturant again. I will most likely not have the buffet any more, but I will definitely try the steak again.

Richard<<<have no idea why I wrote that much about some resturant in the middle of nowhere, I dont think anyone would care what and where I like to eat:)

Just for reference for next year...

I am fully intending being at next year's DCC (it'll be my first) and would like to know what is around the area of the Executive West (for eating, that is). Is there a pizza place? Chinese? Anything?

There are several decent places to eat, if you have a car. And if you leave the parking lot, you will most likely have an extremely difficult time finding a parking spot when you come back.

There are Thai and Indian restaurants just a few miles away. If we can hook up, I'll take you to one of those.

The hotel shuttle I believe will also bring you somewhere. I just don't know where.

Cheers,

Fred

I tried the Dinner Buffet Thursday and Friday night and the Breakfast buffet on Sunday. The Dinner Buffet was pretty decent on Thursday (pulled pork) but pretty bland on Friday. The Breakfast Buffet on Sunday was also pretty decent, but the hash browns could have used some work.

I did hear plenty of people complain though, so I'm sure it could use some work.

The Corner Pocket was decent enough in terms of sandwiches, but I didn't try anything else.

I mostly had the burgers too... will you pay for mine next yr?!?!? :D

After going for 4 years straight to the Derby, the hotel experience and restaurant service is making reconsider my length of stay next year... I went to breakfast with two friends one day and it took the waitress two trips to bring us THREE squares of butter. We had 6 biscuits on our plates. I had one friend sleep in the lobby because they lost their reservation. I had another friend cancel the entire trip because Executive West had them staying in the INN across the street and wouldnt move them. Even though they confirmed they were supposed to be at the West. I think they are under new management with the remodeling and such. But who knows.

And as for Timberly....Yes I will buy you a burger next year. As long as they make some improvement at the restaurant. Otherwise you may just get the 6 bucks cash. Best I can do.

I left every day at least twice. This year for whatever reason, there was almost no problem finding parking. Only once i had to park more than 50 feet from the door. It's a big help if you know what door is the best to park near but im not ruining it for myself by blabbing it.

They will pretty much take you anywhere.... the guy working the booth with me went to the grocery store, staples, & got a hair cut! :D

LOL, I ate so many of those things that I can tell you the total is $7.32 :p (burger, fries, & a pickle)

Nostroke,
Spoken like a TRUE old school pool player; keeping all the good information secret. You should be ashamed of yourself.

P.S. - I think I parked there too; if you tell anyone I'll have to kill you.

The pulled pork sandwich at the snack bar was the best food, and service, at DCC. They had to resort to sloppy joes at the end, but it was still better than the rest.

Ditto exactly my take!

Unfortunately I waited one day too late to get what looked like the good stuff. They started out with what looked like really good pulled pork. A couple of days into it, I bought one but it was different. The texture of the meat & the color of the sauce was different. It was kind of sweet & I didn't much care for it. The stuff they started out with looked like what I'm used to. I wish I would've tried it sooner. There's always next yr. ;)

I spent 9 days 2004 and 2005. I will not be staying at this Hotel again for 9 days. I hear some jails, have better food, and service. The Exective West Hotel needs to up their game. The resturant food was terrible, and there was very little southern hospitality given to the customers. You would think with the weather so G.D. cold during Janaury in Louisville Kentucky. This hotel would treat anybody who goes to Louisville, Ky like kings. Love the tournement, the action, and vendors. Not the hosts!
