It used to be that $30.00 a set made me try.

Got used to $30, quit really trying
so jacked it up to $50.00 a set

Got used to $50 so now it's $80 to $100 just to
gimme enough motivation to win.

Two questions, am I alone in this behavior and
did you ever reach a point where you didn't
need to increase the bet to keep up the motivation?

I discovered a long time ago I didn't have an
interest in betting so much as to change my
lifestyle.

yep, I understand

I used to penny and dime gamble...5.00 10.00 a game, 20.00 sets. I just had this conversation with someone the other day.

I told my buddy that I really felt like I had a hard time playing for 20.00 sets anymore cause it no longer excites me. I will now rarely play for less than 100 because if I do I am subject to piss off any other amount. I don't play to my potential playing small sets.

This escalation is typical for poker players. For pool players, it's not as easy as Black-Bailed states, typically the menu doesn't have such a wide selection. To be honest, I always am eager to play my best for any kind of money when I'm playing pool. I simply hate the feeling of going for my wallet. The actual bet doesn't matter. Poker is a different story. I went from playing pennies a hand to hundreds a hand and barely celebrating my wins after a while unless they were truly unusual. When I'd fall back to smaller stakes, I found it hard to pay attention.

.

When can we get together to play a few of those $50 sets you don't care about winning?

I don't need higher stakes to maintain interest. Even playing for the pool time is sufficient motivation. For some unknown reason every time someone has suggested that we play for food I run out the set.

I don't jack up my bets on sets.

If it doesn't excite me then I will take time off and come back and play for the usual amount.

Time off will get you motivated again.

Personally myself leagues and small tournaments hardly keep my interest. But simply even just talking about gambling will bring out my best game. Doesn't matter if its a buck a game or more.

i too have been haunted by the need to up the wager or play for a certain amount to get my attention. i once read in a "learning to play poker book", i think it was published in the 50s, that one should wager enough that when you lose it will "hurt." otherwise a player could justify his loss by blaming his loss on inconsequental events such as the weather, not feeling good, the tables off, or any other excuse. I adopted that maxim to all my gambling and it has proven an asset. i may lose but it's not because the bet isn't large enough to keep my attention.

Get down five or six games or sets and watch how your attitude changes.

I #%(king hate to lose period...............to anybody..........anytime............anywhere..............at anything...............whatever the stakes are. Sure, losing larger amounts of money make me more angry, but I don't like to lose period, and so far that has been a good motivator.

That has to suck to not be able to try unless there's at least a C note riding. And it must be tough to keep your game up because how do you take practice seriously?

Money isn't the big motivator for me either, though it used to be when I was young. It's just different now. Unlike what someone mentioned before, I do get up for league play. My motivation is that my team mates are counting on me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing for money, but I keep it friendly because the cash isn't my goal, the winning is.

I won a small tournament a few weeks ago. I was telling my son about it and the first thing he asked me was "How much did you win?" I told him $150 but I didn't really care about the money. What I was really after was the $10 trophy.
