Has anyone here replaced the Formica on a gold crown table... There is a slight bend to the face and it needs 1/16 inch Formica.. Not 1/32 vertical grade.... Any ideas.... Has anyone done this mod before.... Let's see those custom goldys.... I just finished the legs.... Piano black with clear finish on the sides of the base it's all maple on the for corners .....

I've thought of it often, never attempted. Consider using real wood veneer, the time and energy in labor is the same (actually veneer may be a bit easier to work) so why not have a real wood finish. Sealed and finished properly should work well. IMO. I've recovered many drums with veneer if you have specific questions please pm for more info.

Stripping off the laminate is not for the faint of heart! Here is a custom one we did with a real wood veneer. Not my choice but really unlimited options. Sorry for the big pics!!

What was your process for pealing the Formica off? Any solvents or heat used? I refinished a GC1 by adhering new 1/16" peal and stick real wood veneer from 3M over the top of the old Formica. It turned out nice because it was sand-able and could stain and clear coat it.

Peeler

I use a sheet rock blade it's 6 inches but very sharp and a mallet.. I was able to get them off in one piece. Once you get it going you can slice away at the glue. No heat or solvents. Once all peeled use laq thinner let set for few mins and rolls right off with your bare hand. Never use mineral spirits glue will not stick ... The spirits never dry for a long time. Heat gun does work well but left it on a job.... My whole problem is going to be drilling the Formica once installed. And getting the sights flush.. I'm going to use a cobalt bit with a 1/8th inch stop.. Well see how it works... I went with Matt black Formica.. Never wear out....we need to make a sight that is installed from under rail with a adjustable hight screw for flushness....drill where you need it to bee and then sight is installed under with set screw.... Done... No more flush problems..... Stay tuned I'll have to make a part number...heheheeh

Thanks for the info. Where did you start the sheet rock blade? Feather strip side, or the back edge where the aluminum extrusion is?

Servicky,
When you peeled back top layer another layer was under it, was that also a laminate material? Or is it possible it was the backing from the top piece of laminate that had seperated? Just curious.

Second layer

Its Formica.. Think I'm leaving it there because all my rails are up about a 1/16th. It's Formica for sure... Not sure if the factory did this or not? Kinda like a shim for final sheet? If i take it off the Formica will be lower than the felt by a /16 or 1/32 I'm not sure what factory spec is but I like it to be flush if not a 32nd higher for wear on that edge of the rail felt..if i am up just a hair it would protect that edge.. Does anyone agree on this?

Thanks to everyone for the compliments!!! It is a cool looking table.

Soo I installed Matt black Formica... Don't really like it now... Either glossy or wood veneer... I'll get some pics asap...
