Forty Days until Christmas, and I want a New Cue Case

For years I have DROOLED every time I see someone with a nice Leather Cue Case.

Now I have decided I want a Leather Cue Case, and can afford to purchase my own Christmas Present.


Dilemma is what Case do I want? What Case configuration do I want? 2 x 4, 3, x 5, or 3 x 6. ?

Considering Talisman, Whitten, Jim Murnak, Jack Justis, or ? No in any special order.

Leather Cue Case owners help me out with suggestions.

You'll want a 2x4 Jack Justis. You won't be disappointed.

I'd go Whitten

Both cases are very nice looking cases in the styles they represent, but the one significant advantage the Whitten has, I believe, is the access to the pockets. Whitten's pockets have the zippers around three sides, so the pockets open up wide. The Justis has a zipper down the middle of the front of the pouch and I've heard some complaints with this configuration. Either way, you can't go wrong, just some things to consider.
 
Suggestions ...

After looking at different cases for months,
I would suggest the following:

Jim Murnak's Vintage line of Cases (with new pocket configuration)
Jack Justis line (Especially his brand new Pro-Lite series)
OnQcases (Exotic leathers used on their cases)

Also, you don't want to spend that kind of money and
'outgrow' the case. Think what you take for league, but
also think what you want to take to Nationals in Vegas too.

I have had a 4 x 8 vinyl that ended up being too heavy
loaded completely up. I have a 3 x 5 now, and it seems
about right to me, IMO. I have always thought a 2 x 4
would end up being too small for me. Pocket space, organization,
and accessibility are important to me in a case.

It's simple to just figure out what you carry with you and order accordingly. I like a 2 x 4 with a single long pouch. They're nice and compact, I can carry my cue with a spare shaft, a jump cue (in the pocket with the shaft in a slot) and my break cue. 3 X 6 are pretty hefty once you load them up.

I think Whittens and Justis are the best available. Whitten's are like fine luggage, and Jack's are the epitome of hand leathercraft. They are different strokes for different folks.

I use a Jack Justis case. I like the natural tooling leather because it can get tossed aorund and never loses its good looks. Don't get suede. I also like the little tip tapper pouch. Pay a little more and get extra tooling or scrollwork.

Here's some picks of Justis cases. The second case from the left is my daily player. It's 10 years old and still looks great. I don't do much to it, just some leather cream now and then.

My advice is to get something you really want and will really keep. Just get what you really like and pay up if you have to. In the long run, you'll save money by having one case that you will keep for 20 years or more.

I love my case from Jim Murnak... I have pics here.

It's a 2x4 GL2103 from the vintage line. The leather is beautiful and rich, and the intricacy of the carvings is amazing! It's dark brown with dark brown and almost black carvings, completely tooled. The pockets are convenient, spacious, and easy to get into. Opens with ease and closes securely. It's amazing and I get the most wonderful compliments on it. I highly recommend one!
 
i love the look of the murnak cases. Someone brought up a good point about accessibility, the pouches that zip around wide let you see and get to all your stuff easier, i have a cheap 3 by 6 case that does that and i really like that aspect.

I think the perfect case would probably be a 3 x 6........you figure your main cue, a break cue and then maybe a fallback cue.......2 shafts for each except one for the breakcue and one for a jumpcue. Its kind of a dilemma, dont want to go too small because then the case isnt enough, too big and its too heavy. I guess too big and not full would be better than too small though. Think it thru cuz its 3 or 4 hundred for a case and its something you prob would lose at least half on if you try to resell cuz you dont like it.

I have a 2x4 Whitten that is just awesome.
I'm also going to check out Jack Justis at Valley Forge. If his new line is as nice as I think it is, I'll probably be picking up a 2x4 from him as well.

I am very pleased with my Murnak 2x4. I have a break cue, jump cue and playing cue with two shafts.... works perfect!

I too am very happy with my Murnak 2x4. The pocket configuration is good and easily accessible, it looks great and I like the way it seals the cues in.
 
Talisman all the way, baby! My name is embossed on the back and they take exceptional care too, just like fine luggage. I like that you can carry it like a backpack and that it even has a little chalk pocket for easy access to 4 pieces of chalk. The pockets have side zippers on both sides plus the top flap buckles so you can get to your stuff easily.

I have a hand tooled leather Instroke 2x4 that was made in Germany. It is a beautiful case. Everyone that sees it drools over it. I used $200 from the shopping spree that I won on Insidepool towards a hand tooled Instroke 3x5. It looks very cheap and doesn't have the quality of the older model that was made in Germany. Just looks like cheap Taiwan junk. I have also found that the 3x5 is too bulky.

If I buy another case it will be a Jack Justis 2x4. I don't think you need anything larger. This give room for your main cue with two shafts and a jump/ break cue or a break cue and room for the shaft of you jump cue, the jump cue butt should fit in one of the pouches.

Go with the Justis and add some frills.

I was making this same choice a couple of years ago. I went with the Whitten because I liked the clean lines. I think they are both nice, quality cases and the choice comes down to whether or not you like tooling on a case.
Either way I think you'll be happy.
