Forum Member Map?

Is there any kind of a forum member map here to help meet other AZ'ers out there? If there is I haven't found it. If there is not could one be made? Maybe a POLL on the idea? There are a couple other forums I frequent, unrelated to pool, where I have met up with several people. I just think it would be cool if it were easier to find playing buddies in whatever area you happened to be. At least by state. Maybe a map showing balloons that when mouse hovers over it shows forum member name so you can at least PM. Thought?

Pretty sure you can do one with Google Maps.
Someone did one for another forum a few years back.

That would be great if it was that easy!

There are 22,258 registered members.

Well it wouldn't be everyone. Just whoever signs up for it.

Was hoping someone on here would be familiar with some software that is free and easy to use. Then if the idea caught on... I sure wouldn't mind meeting up with some fellow AZ'ers or maybe even having some over.

I think it's a great idea! Where is AZHousePro when you need him?

here's an example of vbulletin with a user map http://forums.digitalpoint.com/usermap.php

That was custom coded by the sites developer... I dont think there is anything made for vbulletin as a quick and easy add-on for it.

Edit: Not sure how they're building their database... I selected show yourself and it thinks I'm somewhere near topeka.

Looks like the house pro needs to fix the iPhone theme first lol. I wonder if anybody else caught this...

Billiards Space

On the AZ home page, all the way on the right, near the top. Billiards Space. If eveyone here signed up, you'd have what you're looking for. Yes, I'm in there, LOL.

No, it doesn't really. It doesn't give you any visual aid to know that where I'm going in AR and don't know the zip code for, there are no players. You have to know the zip code for everywhere you want to check. I know it's not that hard to look up a zip code, but it would be MUCH easier and more friendly to click on a state or a region within a state and have a list of players there.

I remember seeing that before. Because it required a zip code - not a state, I didn't sign up. I think it would be cool to look at a map and have some kind of visual as to how many people are signed up in that state, too.

Also, does that Billiards Space cover different countries? I bet it doesn't, since it requires a zip code to search.

It isn't hard to do with Google Maps but it does take some time. You can pinpoint each town on the map and then put the names of the people in each town in the description. The description shows when you click on each pin. I did it on my blog and it is really pretty simple (must be if I can do it). You can also add pictures to each location in the description.

It would take someone with quite a bit of time on their hands that is the only downfall.

Here is an example, just look at the 2009 Where I've been.

One option is to use Google Documents together with MapAList.com, which offers a simple front end to Google Maps:

http://mapalist.com/

Although this certainly isn't the only option, it's fairly easy to use: import your list with addresses (or just city & state) into a Google Documents spreadsheet, follow the instructions in creating a MapAList account, and in very little time you'll have your map. MapAList automatically places pins for all locations.

There is one disadvantage: if the spreadsheet in Google Documents is simply an uploaded copy of your database, you may need to log into Google Documents and MapAList regularly to modify the spreadsheet copy and keep the map in sync.

OK, took care of the forum jump issue on the iphone skin.

The member map may take a bit more time. Let me do some searching.
