Forum rage

John,
Actually the lesson here is don't say anything on the internet that you cannot, or are not prepared to back up. Because whether it in Hopkins or outside in the parking lot, or in one of the small hallways, someone might not enjoy the fruits of their labor.

JV

Yeah, well some people excel at pushing other people's buttons until something is said that maybe they can't or don't really want to back up.

Do you really want a world where everyone is only saying things that they are willing to back up? If so then let's just go back to the wild west and everyone is carrying a gun. I think I might start packing one since you seem to think people ought to back up what they say on the net and I have received a couple death threats from people online.

The lesson is to not get involved with trolls. Eric chose to engage Larry and antagonize him and Larry went off the deep end and Eric made it violent in real life. Next time Eric does that the guy on the other end might just shoot him instead. That would be a tragic end to the story that began as two guys fighting on the internet.

I agree that engaging people who obviously are on tilt is not wise. Crazy people are unpredictable.

This is a lesson that is becoming more obvious as these communication tools develop.

Is this the same phsycology as road rage? I can't believe some of the stuff people direct at each other on these forums, they surly would not say these things in person. I have done a couple of searches today on some info I was needing and found so many threads degenerated into name calling and bickering to the point of arranging boxing matches!!. WTF is wrong with people? It must be the bravery of being out of range that allows the true persona to appear and leaves no doubt about how wars started in the past. The aggression of humans is still bubbling below the surface.

lol @ pocketpoint. I think the problem might have been you metioned something people didn't like multiple times.

To be honest I love reading the forum rage though I do not participate. I find it quite entertaining.

yep, what he says! About as entertaining as tooth extraction!

I like to quote Fred Agnir on this (Cornerman). He once said something to the effect that "internet posting isn't for the thin skinned." I would like to add that it's also not for the frail of ego, nor for the fool who expects to be suffered.

This may sound like mean stuff, but it's true. If you write something really rash or stupid, or wrong, expect to hear the truth. You can also expect that when you write something stupid or rash or vengeful - a few people will agree with you and give rep- which is what's really amazing about the net!

Then there is the chasm created by our different stages of life. Here's an example. A guy writes that his girlfirends hindquarters are great and challenges others to post pictures of their wife or girlfriend's fat hindquarters. All I could think about was the person who is more dear to me than anyone., who has accomplished so much, who has had my child, manages my business, was with me when my mom and dad passed away, who worked her ass off to put herself completely through USC in 4 years without a loan while supporting herself, who made Dean's list at USC and straight A's (not one B) in USC - and in high school too - 7 years of straight A's. One who is absolutely beautiful and accomplished. Who is an Elder in her church, a fine mother and someone I respect more than any other in the world, my wife.

It made me think about a response to "let's see her butt". I realized that we were in different worlds speaking a different language. There would be no way to communicate by written word what I was thinking, so I didn't respond.

Chris

You communicated it here quite well!!

You know what really turns my stomach?
Bare tits on my back, that's what.

I'm sorry Miss Trigger, but I used that boorish and crude witticism to point to the fact that had you and I been engaged in a face to face conversation I would never have made that statement in such a vulgar fashion.
Internet forums give of us courage we don't normally have in the real world. On the forums we are witty, charming, handsome, and in many instances incredibly gifted pool players.
A thousand years from now our ancestors will have obtained immortality and forums of choice may be their real worlds.
I've got to go get a cookie now. :)

You found out about me I see.

IMHO it is not RAGE but Internet Drama that make Member & Guest continue to come to the forum to look, and follow the DRAMA. The Forum owner love it as it is traffic, hits, or a Following that equates to justification for charging "X" For Banner Ads. the more traffic the more for an ad. So if this doesn't make sense to you think of super Bowl sunday, and the cost of Super bowl Commercials because 200 Million Watch the Football Game, on super Bowl Sunday, an the NFL is a 9 Billion Dollar a Year Business!

The more traffic the more for an ad cost because the advertiser is getting more lookers.

John,
The issue is that people will say things on the forums because they think that maybe they won't ever see the other person. It's a cowards way, like a long distance phone call. It's not about the wild wild west, it comes down to accountability and if you are going to say something because you don't think the other person can do something about it, you better be damn sure he can't.
What will eventually happen is that lawsuits will get better so that when peoples mouths are comitting libel / slander / threats that the law can take care of it as some point.
John, if you feel your life has been threatened, then you should act before it actually happens. But it's not like anyone is coming to China just to gun you down.
Until the real law catches up with the internet, Erics Law is the best law, IMHO.

You can say that again....oh, you already did?:)

Well actually I have been threatened recently where someone said to me, "I have no trouble navigating a Mandarin speaking country".

This was in response to me considering applying my own sort of information aggregation to insure that this person's online bully persona and his professional persona were linked for any potential clients to see how this person acts. But in the end I decided that I don't want to apply that sort of "justice" no matter how much it's deserved. I don't want collateral damage.

As far as I am concerned the more that internet drama escalates the more potential there is for a deadly outcome where either I snap and go postal or someone else does it to me.

As I said earlier in this thread maybe the cosmic plan for the "internet" is to set the stage for us all to grow thicker psychological skins.

This post is spot on. You see more and more law suits, or even laws themselves being enforced for threatning people over the web. It is a different world we live in today even vs 5 years ago. What amazes me is why these guys doing it don't get the clue, uummm the text is there in black and white when big brother comes knocking. Same as the younger generation putting their life history on facebook. When job time comes down the road employers can see what was going on in your life as a teenager. NOT smart.

As far as getting a gun JB mentioned in an above post, I don't think you should have firearms JB, lol. You need uppercut lessons from Eric, and make sure the guy is at least holding 1 hotdog when you swing.

Rude! Just kidding. I think something is wrong - I didn't thing it was vulgar! lol.
