Freddy and Grady... Who was the best ever above the table one pocket

Wow, Jay, you remember

I played Ronnie 8 to close, meaning if he got a ball within a three inch area we had drawn on the table, he won. But I got the "hand span" after every shot of mine. I locked him up every time. He got out of the trap by claiming that I had to move the cue ball exactly one hand span every shot. I don't remember any other way that I played him in Norwalk but I probably did because I was in action every day.
This period was when I lived in El Monte with Buttermilk. We'd hang around Fred's place there, with Joe Cosgrove, Don Watson, Ray Booth, Joe Veasey, Alibi Al, Eddie Burton and others. At night, often in my car we'd go to Norwalk or Daisy Mae's in Santa Ana. I'm not sure of the years but I'd guess between 67' and 69'.

You go the right time frame but you forgot the leader of the pack, POPCORN!

C'mon Grady you know how to get out of that one. If you want to leave the cueball in the same spot you move it half a hand over and half a hand back.

Above the Table One Pocket

I saw Efren play Ronnie at the Sports Arena 20 years ago. They were playing 15 Ball Rotation for 1,300.00 per game "Above the Table". Efren broke and ran out "Above the Table". I asked myself "Why even play this game"! My money would be on Efren playing one handed in the air (as I call it) in any game.

Sir, you are grossly mis-informed. For you to think that Fat's (Martin)
could have EVER won RA's cash, playing "jacked up" is ludicrous.
(Funsies, maybe. Cash NEVER.)

Evidently my sense of humor is a little too dry. Omaha Fats was known to claim he was the greatest one handed player in the world.

How did the Monk play one-handed 1-pocket? And I mean Warren C., not the instructor. I hear he played pretty sporty but I never saw him play one handed.

VERY Good! I don't want to knock any future action he might get. After all the guy is ageless. Let's just leave it at that. Very Good!

One Pocket Above The Table / IS RA the man?

Freddie, Grady and Jay: Thanks for all the feedback on my original question but only Jay answered the whole question, which was, "is there anyone out there today who can match RA's above the table skills playing one pocket?" Jay's response was that RA was and still is the best at such a game.

Let us make sure that we are all singing from the same hymnal:

My definition of playing above the table:

Hold the cue any way you desire and stroke any way you desire, provided, no part of your body ever touches the surface of the table and the cue is always above the table... never does the cue touch the table surface.

With that understanding, is it the concensus opinion of all that RA is still the best out there at such a game?

The answer is NO. Ronnie Allen played one-handed all the time, but it was mostly with the cue on the rail. Jacked up is a whole 'nother story. It was already mentioned that there were plenty of better 'jacked up' one-handed players.

Please don't misunderstand me Larry. He isn't the best today! But I have yet to see anyone who played his speed "jacked up" One Pocket. He may be two balls above the world at that game. Or at least he was.

I have to disagree with Scott's post above. When Ronnie played one handed One Pocket it was mostly the "Jacked Up" version. He rarely played off the rail. If there was anyone who could beat him playing One Pocket "up in the air" I never saw them or heard of them. 9-Ball yes, I already mentioned that I witnessed Ronnie lose to Little Sergio.

Correctomundo again Jay ! All the times I saw RA play "jacked up" (as we used to call it) he always played mid air, no "resties" Even when he caught a real sucker, who would allow him to rest on the rail, he would still shoot 90% of his shots "above the table". We never matched up a one handed game, but he did bust a few of my stakehorses that way. I would have him off loser, go next door for a drink, next thing I see, he's got 'em down at his one wing gaff. I made sure I got my end before they went off. Hey, they were all over 21, I never knocked it. ;)
Also, he somehow avoided giving me any "hush" money, the cheap p**** !
