Ken,
Nothing wrong with what you did and congrats on your new purchase. People will come to you because they know you have money and will buy cues if the price is right - they set the price. No deception there at all. People sometimes need quick cash and you gave him more than a pawn shop would, what's the big deal?
It's different if someone pays you for an estimate, low-balling them and then buying it yourself for profit is double-dipping in my mind and should be frowned upon. When in doubt, send all cues to Kevin Brown to post on eBay
.
I once bought a plainjane zebra wood Tad for $400 because a guy I knew needed money and asked me if I were interested. It had thinner shafts, but in good condition. I drove to a 2nd pool hall that was on the way home and a friend of mine wanted the cue and offered me $800. We had done some deals so I would rather have him buy it today then make a few hundred more and delay the sale. So in 3 hours (had to get the money) I doubled my $400. In 5 weeks he sold it for $1600 and doubled his. That was fine with me, in fact I love it when people make money of a cue they bought from me so they will come to me 1st when they need something.
So I feel I helped two people out, the original guy needing money and the guy that made $800 on our deal. All that & I made $400 in 3 hours. Everyone felt good about the deal. Once I sell something at a price I'm willing to sell it at, I don't care what the buyer does with the cue, it's now theirs...I hope they make money.
Good luck with yours, Ken.
Dave
